Mangla set to become country’s largest water reservoir

The raised Mangla dam may replace Tarbela as the country’s biggest water reservoir if rain forecasts for the next two months prove to be correct. Weather experts expect above-average rain during August and September.

On Tuesday, the Mangla lake level hit 1,208.55 feet, storing 4.92 million acre feet (MAF) of water. When it touches its maximum level of 1,242 feet, it will hold 7.6MAF. Tarbela can hold a maximum of 6.4MAF of water.

The lake is also close to beating its previous record of 1,212 feet. Even if it does not hit the maximum level, it is expected to emerge as the biggest reservoir this season.

According to the water planners, the lake still has around 60 more days of better, even exceptional, inflows.

The rain forecast for the next two months set the optimistic pattern: rain in catchments areas would help fill the lake and in other areas reduce the irrigational requirements.

“The expected climatic hydrology this year generated those hopes,” said an official of the Indus River System Authority (Irsa).

The Mangla dam is though 27 feet below the planned level by the end of July, it is still 55 feet above where it was last year on the corresponding day. But the deficit would probably be offset by the meteorological predictions that show above-average rain during the next two months.

No one is sure about the quantum of water that rains can generate, but the authority is hoping to take the lake as much closer as possible to optimum level of 1,242 feet on the basis of those showers. In that case, the lake would hold some three million acre of additional water, with a total of 7.6 MAF.

Realistically speaking, no one is expecting it to hit 1,242 feet level unless some exceptional rains hit the catchments areas but it would certainly end up improving its previous record by far and inching closer to the digit, he said.

The Punjab is already conserving maximum water and running the dam at minimum possible releases for the last few weeks,” claims an official of the provincial Irrigation Department.

For the last few weeks, only 15,000 cusecs are being released to support 13 million acres in the lower and upper Jhelum canals systems. Since these areas cannot get water from any other source, these releases are departmental compulsion. Beyond them, every drop is being conserved.

Luckily, River Chenab is supporting the system with better flows, allowing the province to save maximum water at the Jhelum arm, he said.

The province, like Irsa, is also hoping for better rains in the next eight weeks. Though the Punjab was expecting the dam to hit maximum level by mid-August, but below normal rains during July restricted the filling to its current level.

But it is expecting that next above-average rains in the next two months would make up for the losses and take the lake to a record, and possibly optimum, levels, he concluded.

Good news as freshwater should never be wasted. Any posters here who have personal photos of the dam and lake behind please post them here.

So are we upgrading all of the dams of Pakistan with latest Electrical Generation technology that will going to give us more and more power and what have done yet for the security of these dams from threats that can came from Underneath the water, Land and Air????

really need more big water reserves like Kala bagh……
hoping if any of politician can dare to start project……:smokin:
all bloddy cowards here in politics become rulers……

It has been raining like hell here in mangla for the whole Ramadhan. Regular rain throughout the night and the forecast preidtcs more of it.
I think it will beat Tarbela this year.

Mangla surpasses Tarbela as largest water reservoir

LAHORE: WAPDA Chairman Syed Raghib Abbas Shah said that Mangla Dam Raising Project had been playing a pivotal role in mitigating floods.

During a visit to the Mangla Dam Raising Project on Sunday, he said that the project had also increased the water storage capacity of the dam.

He said that the raised level helped save a 1.5 million acre feet (MAF) of excessive water from Jehlum River and its tributaries, which saved the lowing lying areas around Jehlum River from flooding. He said that the dam still had an additional 1.5 MAF storage capacity.

He further said that the completion of the project represents a watershed in the expansion of water conservation capacity in the country. He went on to say that water was a precious resource, which was a lifeline for the country’s agriculture.

Hence, WAPDA, he said, had been making all-out efforts under the guidance and direction of the federal government to increase the water conservation of existing reservoirs to meet the needs of irrigation and hydropower production. He went on to say that the completion of Mangla Dam Raising Project is the manifestation of the joint efforts being made by the federal government, the government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and WAPDA.

He said that Mangla Dam had become the largest water storage facility in the country after its height had been raised by 30 feet.

He also said that the water storage capacity of Mangla Dam after completion of the raising project increased from 4.5 MAF to 7.39 MAF and thus it would store 2.88 MAF of additional water.

He said that the filling of the dam was recorded at 1,225 feet out of total 1,242 feet.

He further said that the reservoir had stored 6 MAF of water by now and given the weather forecast, it was likely to be filled up to its maximum level by mid-September. He said that the project would add 644 million units of low-cost electricity annually from the existing powerhouse.

The WAPDA chairman appreciated the teamwork displayed by the project office, Government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, consultants, contractors and the local media.

Later in the day, the WAPDA chairman also visited medical camps set up by WAPDA for the flood victims of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Divisional Commissioner and Commissioner for Mangla Dam Affairs Amjad Pervez, Mirpur DIG Tahir Qureshi, District Health Officer Dr Bashir, and senior officials of WAPDA including General Manager and Project Director Ghulam Sarwar Memon and MDRP, Chief Engineer Muhammad Saleem, accompanied the chairman during his visit.

Ohh please....credit goes to none other but N.S

yes .,.he was the one who messed with mushy and that credits goes to him ..then mushy locked NS in jail and made Pakistan a much better place ...

On one hand building dams increases your water storage capacity along with electricity generation capability. However, stopping of water flow into sea results in receding of coast line. In some cases bigger dams have caused increase in desert land. Concurrently, problem between provinces on the issue of Kalabagh dam continues. In such circumstances it is better to build smaller dams down stream. More localised irrigation system so less grievances. more decentralised power generation.
This is my opinion people may differ.

Power Generation Capacity in Mangla is still small, as compare to Terbella.
@Topic

Is it even true since I just saw this news.

The Flood Forecasting Division has said that water level in the Dam has reached 1549.25 feet against its maximum capacity of 1550 feet. Usually water level in Tarbela Dam mounts to its maximum capacity on August 20.

The water inflow into Tarbela Dam was recorded at 1,87,200 cusecs, while discharge stands at 1,79,544 cusecs and the usable water reserve in the Dam is 65,38,000 acre-feet, according to the Flood Forecasting Division.

On the other hand, the Mangla Dam water level has surged up to 1225.60 feet, water inflow was recorded at 50,185 and discharge at 15,000 cusecs, while the usable water reserve measured stands at 61,29,000 acre-feet.
