New Delhi: Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government on Wednesday slashed power tariffs by 50 percent for consumption up to 400 units per month in Delhi.

Keeping in line with the promises made by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) during election campaign, the newly-elected Delhi government also announced free 20,000 litres of water per month to every household.

Talking to reporters, Delhi's Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said that the reduction in power tariffs will benefit 90 percent households in the capital.

"Those families using more than 400 units will have to pay the entire bill," the Deputy CM said.

"The order will come into effect from March 01," Sisodia added.

Sisodia announced that his government will waive off water and sewer charges for families using 20,000 litres of water.

The AAP leader said, the Delhi Jal Board has a helpline number (1916), which people can use to register their complaints.

Last week, Kejriwal had said that his government would cut power tariffs and launch free water scheme "very soon".

In its manifesto, AAP had promised to cut power tariffs by 50 percent immediately after coming to power and said the rates would be revised on the basis of the findings of a CAG audit which the Kejriwal government had announced during its first stint.

The previous AAP government had introduced free water scheme but it was discontinued after it quit.

The discoms had opposed the CAG scrutiny and approached the Delhi High Court, contending that the Delhi government's decision asking CAG to audit the power companies' accounts is "patently" illegal on several counts.

The Delhi CM today met Comptroller and Auditor General Shashi Kant Sharma and discussed the status of scrutiny of finances of private power distribution companies by the auditor which was ordered by the AAP government during its first stint.

Sources said Kejriwal conveyed to Sharma his government's view apropos of the CAG audit of finances of discoms and its plans to review the electricity tariff after the findings of the audit.

Good for dilli walas, But he shouldn't give this facility to ones who voted for BJP.

You seem confused about the way a democracy functions, hardly surprising since your country has been making a mockery out of it for 70 years now.

Back to topic, this will leave very little money on the table for any forward movement on development. I doubt the wisdom of this move.

Unlike your country, we have democracy here which works without prejudice.

Yeah - I have seen flag bearer of democracy applauding for people of Delhi for casting their vote as per their wish.
