You did not understand the airport episode.India is just trying to defuse Tensions with China instead of Cozying up with Chinese. Indian Establishment still sees China as a Threat to their National Interest especially in Indian Backyard. Maldive Airport thing is Part of Reaction from India in order to Compete with Chinese presence in Maldives and that is beneficial for Srilanka and Maldives to have good Relations with China because it create a lot of Competition in terms of Economic Development in Srilanka and Maldives..
Maldives airport was a private venture from an Indian company. It would not have provided India with any 'presence'. The Maldivian government wanted to p!ss off India and nationalized it. I was saying that things in Maldives changed a lot since then. Most people there do not want to challenge India and in fact want closer relations.
India is prepared for China, but it does not meddle with foreign governments to stop China from building relations with them(the way US and Pakistan do). So India kept quite and put up with Rajapakse for so long, the same way it put up with earlier Nepalese government and the present Maldivian government.
It is upto the governments to make India and China to compete in friendship. But if India's hand is forced, it is capable of some things. Rumour has it that India played a part in stitching the coalition against Rajapakse.
