Malaysia offers $ 5-6bn for construction of Bangabandhu Airport

That is still a lot of money. No doubt, there'll be strings attached. And there's still a lot of unused capacity in the current one. Why fix something that's not broken?

Beside new airport will bring fresh new business which current airport does not. The target market is beyond the middle eastern labor.

Bangladesh does not have nowhere near air/cargo traffic volume that can justify such investment and cost? For example, Dubai $4.5 billion terminal 3 which handles bulk of Dubai's 50 million passenger traffic. Compared to that Bangladesh handles only 6 million.

Simply put Bangladesh does not have passenger or business case to spend $5-$6 billion on airport.
Upgrade and modification can do the job fine for years to come.

If airport chanrges more than any regional airport for landing fee and service, no airlines will tolerate that.

CAAB has been in category-2 by ICAO for the past three years ever since AL came to power. Why are they focusing on this new airport when there are more important issues to address?

Ok... regarding the present airport what I have heard due to this airport up to 20 km radius the building height can be 150 ft. Even though many high rise building has been made violating the rule. There are some pressure from the private builders to relocate the airport so that more high rise building can be made legally.

Not only the airport but also the cantonment needs to be moved out of the city and the old airport too if possible.

Government has a another plan to spread the benefit of the airport to the south western districts which is lagging in development.

YOu cant see it as you are revolving around circular logic. This is a private investment, so the responsibility to bring business lies to them and nothing to do with CAAB.

Again the airport targeting 46 million passenger. It will not be domestic passengers and cargoes but international transit passenger and cargoes. The private investor already did or will do the feasibility study before they throw 6 billion dollar to this project. Its too early to say anything about it.

But govt must be careful in this investment proposal. Private investor may say that they will invest 6 billion dollar instead end up investing 250 million and take all the business away from Zia. Sometimes these investors trick the government to take control of the existing guaranteed business.

But we need to be cautious on the ground that last week auditor general of India find traces of 1.63 lakh crore rupee corruption of the newly built 3.5 billion dollar terminal of the Delhi airport. It mentioned government imposed less lease rent, some part of the land for commercial exploration and later the company started charging development fee from the passenger from this May 15 which was not mentioned earlier that they will do.

We should not follow the same mistakes...All this stuff needs to be checked before finalizing the deal..

But we should not forget that a well equipped airport or sea port always help to prosper the country. A world class airport will bring Bangladesh into world radar if it really can become a transit hub... in this way it will help to bring more investment in the country ...and develop the surrounding region or districts of the airport.

Bangladesh government is also in talk with Qatar for the project.

If it is fully private venture then they will pay the lease rent. But I think government will keep some hold in the airport thats why it will be under PPP.

Public has to pay for Sheikh Mujib or Shahid Zia cult name no matter what because they are stupid. They cant elect anybody else other than bone headed Zia Sainik or Mujib Sainik.

So just deduct the above 2 project cost from the 7.5 billion usd dollar. It will come in between 4-5 billion usd.

No such plundering scheme was and is hatched in name of Zia and there is no cult arund his name. But if you are irked by how Awami League dragging their leader name for their corruption scheme then you have to somewhere else to go for remedy.

Why not just leave it to the investor? Or you can apply for their business consultant post.
