Malaysia considering new multirole fighter jets, including the LCA-Tejas

10 JANUARY 2019

The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) is likely to procure 30 lightweight multirole fighters to complement its fleet of F/A-18D and Su-30MKM aircraft and has therefore requested a bid for the Indian LCA-Tejas.

Among the other aircraft that are candidates to acquire the contract, we may find the FA-50 (Korea Aerospace Industries), the JF-17 (Pakistan Aeronautical Complex), the Mig-35 (United Aircraft Corporation) and also JAS-39C/D Gripen (Saab).

The LCA Tejas is an Indian single-seat, single-jet engine, multirole light fighter created by HAL and the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) for the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy. The Indian Air Force has already ordered 40 new LCA Tejas, including 20 FOC-configured aircraft and 20 IOC-configured aircraft. The Tejas are initially equipped with a NVG-compatible glass-cockpit, an infra-red search and track (IRST) sensor, some air-to-air, air-to-surface and anti-ship missiles and also different bombs.

Moreover have Sri Lanka, Egypt, UAE and Singapore evinced interest in the HAL LCA Tejas.

There already is a thread i suggest merging both. This is just speculation and consideration. Malaysia wants to milk pakistan, china, india and russia for best cost effective deal. May the best aircraft win!

I doubt tejas would win. Mig 35 and saab have higher chances then jf 17 and lastly tejas but very unlolely for tejas.

what is being seen as an endorsement to the Indian Tejas’s quality, Malaysia may be shifting its interest from the Sino-Pakistani JF-17 ‘Thunder’ to India’s Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) and is reportedly keen on buying 30 such planes.

Kuala Lumpur has asked New Delhi to send a Tejas fighter plane to the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2019 (LIMA’19) which is Malaysia’s premier defence exhibition, as reported by Business Standard.

Malaysia switching to the Indian fighter instead of the one developed jointly by China and Pakistan will be the second setback to Islamabad after Sri Lanka earlier backed away from the JF-17 despite expressing interest in it.

The Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), though not fully developed, is considered far deadlier than the JF-17 Thunder fighter by many experts.

The current version of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s (HAL) Tejas might be slightly costlier than its Pakistani counterpart with the former priced at $28.5 million and the latter at $25 million. However, Tejas reportedly offers better performance compared to the Pakistani jet, which has been developed jointly by the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation of China and Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, Kamra.

Tejas excels JF-17 in the technologies that are utilised in it, including lightweight composite material body, sophisticated quadruplex digital flight control system, microprocessor-based utility controls and the superior American GE-404IN engine among others.

The Malaysian Air Force is already flying Sukhoi-30MKM, which is modelled on the IAF’s Sukhoi-30MKI.

In fact, JF-17 has the best chance to win. Malaysia has low opinion on russia aircraft maintenance. Western aircraft are expensive and plenty of string involved. Malaysia is not a rich country. Getting a number of 30 will involved some careful finance of budget.

JF-17 remain the best bet. Korea T-50 infact posed a bigger threat to JF-17. And the fact myanmar AF has this aircraft also posed a problem for RMAF.

JF-17 uses Russia engine. AFAIK, no service problem with JF-17.

Hahaha! Malaysia doesn’t recognise Israel, and since Tejas has an Israeli avionics suite, Malaysia can’t consider it for procurement. Indians have no shame in spreading false news!

All the Israeli avionics can be replaced with Indian and European avionics.

And it's the Malaysians who invited us.

New avionics means new testing and that means like longgggg delays. That also certainly means that the current jet with Israeli content can’t be accepted.

All countries want their air shows to be filled with planes. Doesn’t guarantee an order.
