KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia said on Wednesday that Shias in
the country, who have been termed a ‘deviant’ sect, are
barred from promoting their faith to other Muslims but
are free to practise it themselves.

Some 200 Shias were arrested in December by religious
authorities who accused them of threatening national
security in multicultural Malaysia, where most of the 16.5
million Muslims are members of the Sunni sect.

“We don’t prohibit Shia adherents to practise but there
are (laws) that don’t allow preaching to adherents of
Sunnah Wal Jamaah (Sunnis),” Islamic affairs minister
Jamil Khir Baharom told parliament according to state
media. Jamil Khir said the government had made ‘various
efforts’ to halt the spread of the faith in the country,
including issuing fatwas against the sect and the
‘monitoring and control of materials promoting Shia faith.”

Mohammed Khusrin Munawi, a former religious
department head in Selangor state who led the December
16 raid, has said that Shia Islam represents a threat
because ‘fanatical followers of the sect consider other
Muslims infidels’.

Shia community leader Kamil Zuhairi Abdul Aziz said on
Wednesday that Shias in Malaysia do not preach to other
Muslims.

“Although we keep a very low profile, live in
harmony with Sunnis and non-Muslims and practise our
religion within our community, we have been persecuted by
the authorities for many decades,” he told AFP. “In fact,
we are not the ones who are spreading our faith. By
arresting us and making this an issue, the. state religious
authorities are giving us the publicity and spreading our
teachings.”

The estimated 40,000 Shias in Malaysia are one of
several Islamic sects under close watch by religious
authorities, who crack down hard on so-called deviant
groups. A 1989 Islamic law and a 1996 fatwa by
Malaysia’s top Islamic clerics banned Shiism, declaring it a
deviant ideology. Malaysia has a dual-track legal system,
with civil courts running in parallel with Islamic courts where
Muslim Malays can be tried on religious and moral charges.

Nice move, hope my country can follow our Muslim Malay Brothers

They have the freedom to practice the religion but can't promote it.

The test of any "best" solution is to stand its own ground. If you are confident this is the best religion, no matter how strongly someone preaches other religions, it should not change a person. By banning open preaching, you are curtailing the diversity of human thought. Why so averse to someone preaching other religions?

.
Wow, may be west, India and China should prohibit Muslims too, to remain stable. Surely Muslims cannot disagree with this solution of their own.

These Muslim bigots would come up with any excuse to justify their persecution and oppression.

Ironically Malaysia is supposed to be one of the more moderate Muslims countries. Well, this is moderate Islam for you for those who complain extremists get too much media attention.

They have the freedom to practice the religion but can't promote it.

Why not? Promoting one’s faith is the basic right of any human being. Muslims do it all over the world.

.
This will definitely stabilize it. This is a precautionary action. There is almost no Jordanian Shia in Jordan and it's prohibited to promote for them, and yet Jordan is one of the most stable in the ME.

West has all religions and all sects of them, yet they are largely stable. Admit that you guys are backwards, living by a stone-age ideology mentality. This has no place in 21st century and there is certainly a case for banning you guys from promoting it in the world.

Imagine the outcry if any European country did the same to Muslims. Seems like the ''Mainstream Muslims'' have very weak faith.

Good decision, only if state has the authority to decide who is right Muslim and who is wrong Muslim and who is not Muslim..if you know what I mean:devil:

I guess this is wholly justified then; Buddhists don’t want instability in their country too.

BBC News - Sri Lanka Buddhist mob attacks Colombo mosque

Have you not heard that wahhabi moron zakir naik's views on the matter? He says (sunni wahhabi) muslims KNOW they are right and hence they should not allow others to preach. I mean textbook definition of bigotry, hypocrisy and sissy behaviour all rolled into one.

The malaysians are called moderate is a joke, malaysia is moderate because 40% are buddhist, christian and hindus. Sorry thats just a fact. There are many many cases where their sharia courts and government have meted out injudtice to non muslims or muslims wishing to leave their faith in less than third world manner.

I'm glad singapore is a many many times more successful country compared to malaysia today, although one country once, its natural justice.

its a bit more complicated then that, religious gathering need govt approval (or so I have been told). I have not seen Sunni gatherings for that matter too, mosques are only open for jamaat then they close the main gates (maybe its different in other areas).

Since when did promoting religion became a basic human right? UN limits it to observance of religious practices as a person may deem fit.

Are you trolling? SG banned Indian schools when they felt that the 'cultural' values installed by those schools was coming in the way. Perhaps you should visit some SG forums which are full of rhetoric against Indians whom most consider to be a culturally inferior segment of society.

No it’s not complicated at all. You Malaysian Muslims are bigots, oppressors and inhumane people. All bigots come up with excuses and try to obfuscate the issue. You are not the first one and we have heard it all before millions of time, so spare the patronising.

Oh Yes, muslims can , shitts can not,Period.

Why are wahabi shitts allowed to preach their extremism all over the world?
