Islamabad: Capital authority aided by Police and machinery launched operation against Afghan slum which provoked the inhabitants and resulted in protest, reported Dunya news.

As the CDA officials reached Sector I-11, baton-wielding Afghan refugees came out of their houses to stop the operation. They were asking for alternative settlement place prior to demolitions. A demand which CDA authorities rejected and maintained that alternatives can be discussed after the evacuation.

Meanwhile, a heavy contingent of police and Rangers personnel arrived at the scene and were directed to remain alert to counter the protesters.

The settlement in Sector I-11 is the largest such kachchi abadi (slum) in the federal capital, housing more than 20,000 people.

Supreme court has asked the authorities to clear the capital from the illegal slums.

A full-fledged eviction operation against the informal settlement has been launched in Sector I-11.
ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – Teams of Capital Development Authority (CDA) alongwith heavy contingent of police and Rangers personnel today (Thursday) launched a grand operation to demolish Afghan Basti in Sector I-11 of the federal capital, Dunya News reported.

All roads leading to Afghan Basti were blocked before launch of the operation to raze more than 800 illegal homes constructed in Sector I-11.

Protesting against the operation, residents of katchi abadi (slum) pelted stones at police and CDA teams while many families refused to come out of their homes.

Law enforcement personnel also resorted to baton-charge and used water canon to disperse angry protestors.

Btw, those displaced should be accomodated somewhere else IMO..

It is CDA's own fault for letting them be there in first place .

Not our problem. They have their country to go to. They are not stateless.

Nobody fault they choose to live like this. They can go back to Afghanistan and they will have plenty of "kachi abadi" to live in.

Don't be fooled by the name, many who live in these Kachi bastis are Local Pakistanis too.

It is CDA' and authority's own fault for letting them live there for over 15 years, where can they go now?? they let them settle, you can't throw someone out like that living there for over a decade.

I'm justifying the Op. since they are living illegally there on public land, but govt. should take measures to accommodate them else where, you just can't displace 20,000 people like that living there for so many years, they'd sleep on the side of the roads otherwise .. which is not cool to me.

.
this really is of no use when the same Afghans are staying here,
it'll only spark more negative sentiments for the local authorities.
it wouldve been much more effective if all of these illegals are sent back to Afghanistan.

Well first if all great initiative as illegal occupation of land should not happen so a fine start. The biggest problem with such places are that the Afghani terrorist sympathizers may accommodate terrorists in such places. We should put the Afghanis living their in a truck and send them back home to where they belong.... As for Pakistanis living there , its the CDAs fault allowing them to stay there in the first place. Leaving them alone would only increase crime as these guys might take the criminal route. They should look to relocate the pakistanis to some other legal kachi abadi since they allowed/ignored their occupation for a long time.

Overall a very good initiative and I was watching on news how they were putting their women and children in front of the machines to stop the demolation but the police removed them.... Good start by the CDA and long may it continue against illegal occupation of lands.
