Mahindra Aerospace, the aerospace arm of Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), is readying the prototype of a small private aircraft built in collaboration with state-owned National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL). The five-seater, turbo-prop aircraft, NM5-100, will be flown by March. Its first flight was earlier scheduled in mid-2009.

This is the first time Bangalore-based NAL has ventured into developing small-sized private aircraft with private participation. The institution, responsible for the design of the NM5-100, had earlier worked on designs for the Hansa trainer and Saras, a light transport aircraft. M&M has earlier manufactured and delivered 24 five-seater aircraft for Jordan-based Seabird Aviation Jordan. The planes were manufactured by M&M at the rate of 3-4 units per month. Each plane cost $400,000.

According to the previous agreement, a substantial part of the design and development of the NM5 will be done by NAL, while marketing and serial production of the plane will be done by M&M

And how is it related to indian defence? If it is sooooo big thingy than put it in ecnomic part.
FYI, Pakistan air force has been manufacturing aircrafts from decades ago, which even don't crash on their first flight.

I never saw you making the same comment to members posting india hatred threads, atrocities on minorities etc which just pops in every now and then. Why dont you suggest them first ?

Meanwhile NAL is a defence establishment and the news is not totally irrelevant.

By the way how is it relevant to post what pakistan is doing since decades in this thread ?

How is Mushaq and super Mushaq equvalient to NM5-100 , Pakistani aircraft are trainer aircraft with seating for 2-3 students and pilot where as NM5-100 is a small aircraft with a seating for 5 people and its not a trainer aircraft.

Now tell me what does PAF produce ?

atleast now the govt is taking the initiative to allow private players into the game. public-private partnership is the way to go.

The second prototype (PT2) first flew on 20 April 2007. The third prototype is expected to fly by June 2009, with the modifications for weight reduction. The first prototype aircraft was on flying display at the 2005 Aero India airshow.

The total sanctioned cost of the project is at Rs 139 crores (30 Million USD).

Saras is one of the few aircraft to make use of a pusher propeller configuration. The basic configuration resembles very closely the platform of the Embraer/FMA CBA 123 Vector which never went into production.

The initial certification plan will include the two prototypes ( to be flown by the Airborne Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE) for a total period of 500 hours before certification from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Currently, work is progressing in all aspects towards building the weight optimized Production Standard Aircraft (PSA), with a targeted weight reduction of 500 kg. PSA is expected to have its first flight in the year 2009.[3]

Saras-PT1 of the aircraft will be modified and converted to a Saras-PT3 by fitting the higher thrust Pratt and Whitney engines.[4]

An extended version of Saras is planned. Commercial production of the aircraft is now expected by 2010. :cheers:

Mashaq was originally Saab safari aircraft assembled in Pak. Now I guess Pak does full mfg.

Before Mahindra NAL is mfg tie with a private mafg company named TAAL . They are in mfg for decades. Saras was also mfd there. India is still long way to go in aircraft mfg. So no chest thumping!
