Ashok Leyland's Optare keen on capturing small bus market

After Ashok Leyland-controlled Optare ended its partnership with Ferqui, the Spanish coach-builder, the company has decided to focus on the small bus market. The company will withdraw from the luxury coach market to enter the small and accessible bus market with a new model named Bonito.

Optare’s Chief Operating Officer Glenn Saint said, “We are in negotiation with a number of parties which may lead to the two current models, the Soroco and Toro, already available in the UK, though outside the Optare brand.” Ferqui has been supplying a range of products for Optare and Mercedes vehicles. Now, Optare would ensure that its latest Bonito is an attractive purchase for major UK city operations.

Saint said, “We have been looking at a number of routes to enter the important small bus/accessible vehicle market and are convinced that the fully-developed Bonito is the right answer”

Optare’s move is in line with its current plan and re-positioning of its product range for growth. Last year in October, it has made its intention clear on with the announcements on Solo and the launch of the new Tempo SR.

“We will be making an announcement about the development of the Versa for the UK and export markets in the second quarter of this financial year” Saint added.

Rs 13,000 crore over a period of eight years to promote electric and hybrid vehicles

NEW DELHI: The government plans to invest around Rs 13,000 crore over a period of eight years to promote electric and hybrid vehicles in the country and the Department of Heavy Industries is expected to seek Cabinet approval for the same within the next three months.

According to sources, the Department of Heavy Industries has also decided to include a clause in the draft National Mission for Hybrid and Electric vehicles (NMHEV) suggesting PSU banks to offer loans to customers for purchasing electric vehicles (EVs).

"The government will put in around Rs 13,000 crore till 2020. This is mainly to incentivise the sector to attract private players," a senior official from the Department of Heavy Industries told PTI.

The earmarked amount will be utilised for setting up R&D centres apart from various other activities, including giving tax benefits.

These incentives will help in cutting down the production costs of such vehicles as these are already very expensive compared to the traditional fuel-based vehicles, he added.

"In next three months, we will send the proposal to the Cabinet for its approval ... This investment will help the government to save Rs 27,000 crore on fuel costs," the official said.

Countries like the UK, France and Germany give such types of incentives to promote hybrid and EVs, he added.

Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises is drafting the NMHEV in consultation with various stakeholders of the automobile industry. The first meeting took place on May 11, 2011, and about 25 sittings have taken place so far, deliberating various issues.

Talking about financing for purchasing such vehicles, an industry source said: "Currently, no financing facility is available for purchasing EVs. Many lower-middle class families are buyers of two-wheeler EVs that have very minimal operational costs. The government may give a directive to PSU banks to give loans to such buyers."

It is understood that under the NMHEV, it would be made mandatory for all upcoming housing complexes across the country to have charging points for electric vehicles.

"It is proposed that no drawing will be passed by the Ministry of Urban Development if there is no charging socket planned at the parking space," a source said.

Auto major Mahindra & Mahindra today introduced a range of utility vehicles, including XUV500 and Scorpio, in Kenya as it forays into the passenger segment in the African country.

The company's African footprint extends to Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana, Nigeria, Sudan and South Africa, where it has a joint venture -- Mahindra South Africa.

M&M launches Maxximo Mini Van VX at Rs 3.7 lakh, to take on Maruti Suzuki's Eeco and Omni

Mumbai: India 's largest utility vehicle maker, Mahindra & Mahindra is fast making inroads into the small commercial vehicle space. After garnering over 20-25% share in the mini truck segment with the Maxximo load and soft top van, the company on Friday launched a hard top mini van to take on Maruti Suzuki's Omni & Eeco.

Launched in the Ahmedabad market, the Maxximo Mini Van Vx BS III is priced at Rs 3.7 lakh ex-showroom Ahmedabad and is the only diesel hard top van in the country. The company claims it is 30-40% more spacious then Omni and offers a mileage of 18-20 kilometers per litre, thanks to the proven C2 common rail diesel engine.

Though all this, comes at an additional cost, which is approximately Rs 1 lakh higher than Maruti Suzuki's Omni.

Arun Malhotra, s enior VP, sales & customer care, Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra told ET, " Our aim is to offer a diesel vehicle that is stylish and best-in-class in space, comfort and operating economics. The hard top Van can be used for the purpose of school van, stage carrier application, used by tour and traveler operator and even the tv crew and inside the airport."

According to industry experts, around 20,000 mini vans are sold per month, with the market growing by 8-10% annually. Maruti Suzuki is dominant leader with the sales of over 12,000 units per month of Omni and Eeco, followed by Tata Motors which sells about 4,500 to 6,000 units of Magic & Magic Iris and Mahindra's own mini van Maxximo Van around 2,000 to 2,500 units a month.

With the new product, Mahindra hopes to add a minimum of 1,500 units a month.

To be launched in a phased manner, Ahmedabad and Jaipur are the first few key markets, where the van will be launched, before the vehicle is rolled out nationally within 3-6 month.

The hard top van is the fourth product offering on the flexible Maxximo platform, which has spawned products like Maxximo load, semi hard top van, a CNG pick up and now the hard top van produced out of the company's plant in Chakan, Maharashtra.

And since it is the fourth product on the flexible Maxximo platform, M&M has shelled out merely few crores for the development of the hard top mini van.

With its robust monocoque chassis, constructed with bigger box-sections for greater rigidity, and the booster-assisted Twin LSPV brakes and frontal crash protection, the Mini Van is also one of the safest products in its category, claims the company.

"This sliding door hard top variant of the Maxximo Mini Van has undergone rigorous test runs and has been validated on all performance, safety and reliability parameters. The vehicle is further supported by Mahindra's service network, which is one of the largest and spread across the country," added Malhotra.

Indian engineer's vehicle promises safer rural transport

India's rural mobility scenario could soon see a much-awaited change with a Delhi engineer's indigenously developed vehicle set to give the locally made but accident-prone versions a run for their money - that is, as soon as he gets funds for commercial production.

Abhinav Das, a 26-year-old mechanical engineer from Delhi's Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University is confident that if and when he gets the funds, his Rural Utility Vehicle (RUV) will prove to be a boon for the dwellers of rural india.

"I had designed a vehicle for an inter-college off-road contest while in college but soon realised that if properly modified, it would be perfect for the off-road and no-road conditions in rural India," Das told IANS in an interview.

The annual off-road event, the Baja Rally, is organised by the Society of Automobile Engineers (SAE) at Indore and serves as a stage for young engineering students to showcase their designing and manufacturing talents.

After a stint at the International Center for Automotive Technology (ICAT) and automobile-parts major Sona-Koyo, Das left for the Incubation Center at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, where he got the funds to further develop his idea.

Pursuing his goal, he travelled extensively in the rural heartlands of northern India, gaining a deeper understanding of the harsh realities of the poor infrastructure available in the region.

"Millions of villages lack road connectivity. Every day 50 million girls walk up to 40 kilometres to fetch water which in turn results in their dropping out of school," said Das.

"According to UN studies, in rural India, the majority of deaths in childbirth happen because medical help can't reach on time. My aim is to provide these people a better mobility solution as in such areas, mobility is hugely empowering," he added.

After three years of struggle, the first prototype of his RUV is ready and all he needs is some investors who will believe in his idea.

"Its innovative chassis design means the structural strength of the RUV is better than the mini-trucks plying on Indian roads and three to four times stronger than the three- wheelers," he said, adding the RUV can be legally used on the road and is less polluting unlike the 'jugaads'.

Jugaads are locally made vehicles used mostly as a means of low-cost transportation in rural areas. With poor brakes, agricultural pump engines, faulty structures, they are often overloaded and are a disaster waiting to happen.

"The RUV can be easily transformed from people carrier to goods carrier and can be serviced locally and cheaply. The 12 horsepower power take-off (PTO) can be used for pumping, spraying or even power generation in rural areas, just like the tractors," he added.

A PTO is a splined driveshaft, usually on a tractor or truck, that allows implements to draw energy from the vehicle's engine.
Powered by a Greaves-Cotton 600 cc diesel engine, Das' RUV would have a top speed of 50 to 60 kmph. :yahoo:

"Couple of years down the line, depending on customer demands, the RUV can be adapted to run on green fuels like CNG or electricity too," says Das.

According to Das, his vehicle would be the perfect substitute for the 'jugaad' as it can do everything that the 'jugaad' does but in a much refined and safe manner.

And the price of the RUV is not too high for the intended market. "An average local vehicle costs around Rs.125,000 ($2,500). At Rs.150,000 ($3,000), a finished RUV will cost only Rs.25,000 ($500) more and would in turn provide a much safer ride. In our surveys, most of the jugaad users were more than willing to shell out the extra cash," he said :woot: .

Global cars, Indian by design

Indian design houses are playing a crucial role in the development of new automobiles many of which are for markets overseas.

Renault’s small car Twizy, which is “neither a two-wheeler nor a four wheeler, but seats two and has four wheels,” was partly developed with India design teams.

“This electric vehicle may not even be considered for India, but Indian design teams have contributed significantly to its design,” according to Mr Len Curran, Vice-President of French carmaker Renault in India.:yahoo:

Mr Curran said the Mumbai design house worked also on the Twingo and the Duster that was unveiled recently. Some of these cars may not come to India, but the role of design houses is vital for the overall car development. The Duster has been re-designed by the local teams. The company is also relying on the design teams here for its small car.

PLATFORMS

The other important contribution of the designers here has been the ability to quickly adapt the existing platform for other models. Therefore, the Renault platform, used by other manufacturers, gets design inputs here.

Mr I.V. Rao, Managing Executive Director, Engineering, Maruti Suzuki, told Business Line: “Indian designers have been working with global teams on new cars. Several cars from the Maruti stable have been designed with engineers here. Maruti is working on a global car developed out of India.”

The other important aspect is the use of the same platform to develop different models. “We did this with the old Swift platform on which we had Ritz and Old Swift Dzire. The new Swift platform is being used for Swift/Dzire and Ertiga MPV,” he explained.

The R&D centre of Korean carmaker Hyundai in Hyderabad has played a significant role in development of the small car Eon, now in the market.

Mr P. Balendran, Vice-President, General Motors India, said the Indian R&D centre in Bangalore has played a vital role in bringing about changes and localisation of the Cruze and the Tavera. The mandate of the design team is increasing. One day we may see a fully India designed car for global operations
