Car manufacturers in China do all kinds of tests to ensure the safety after the poor crash test results received more than a decade ago. And now achieved 5 star ratings.

Yup they don't have their own safety testing agency, that's why they need to send for global ncap in UK. This shows you how much they care about safety in their country. We shouldn't bash them, we should let them maintain this kinda of mentality.

There are so many car companies in China that its hard to keep up. Thanks for the posts guys, I have learned some new things.

IMHO there are too many brands in China. Eventually there will be consolidation when the market saturates.

On top of the 40+ local brands they each have sub-brands. For example: SAIC owns Maxus and Great Wall Motors owns Wey Motors (both not on the diagram). If all electric car companies and car startups are included, there will be dozens more. Each region/province has their own auto brand much like as if they were different competing countries which is good for the consumer.

Due to this competition quality and innovation is increasing rapidly.

Very nice charts. Yes, me too, I learn about a new company every day. Most of the brands shared by desperate Indians are not even on the list. Those brands are probably small workshops run by some car enthusiasts.

I also believe that there will be further consolidation. I think we will come down to five or six major brands with multiple sub-branches. Which is good for quality control and regulation of the market.

My current favorites are BYD, Chang'an, and Great Walls.

Not only do they manufacture their engines and transmissions. Their engines and transmissions are self-developed. You can google BYD, Chery, Great wall, among others about this. This is the reason our cars are so cost effective. Chinese domestic car companies start to use their self developed engines and transmissions since more than 10 years ago.

I know they are in the well. But still I was surprised by their level of ignorance. It is 2017, they still think Chinese car manufacturer can not make some car engine, let alone we also use our indigenously developed DCT, AT, CVT, etc.. transmission systems. Even indian auto companies make some engines today, although they are crappy.... Chinese can claim Airbus being a chinese company since its has a assembly plant in Tianjin China.
