Happy to see this service. Will earn quite a few $ with tourism inflow. But as many Chinese members have been Happy to point out, our basic trains are ancient! There has to be an upgrade.

Ironically, in communist China, railways are privatized but in India they still remain in the hands of the government. There is really a need to start atleast part privatization. Atleast, the competition would push the govt to upgrade wagons running under their control a.k.a. the bus services around the country.

Why privatize a profitable sector....?.For the sake of modernization ,if you privatize an profitable Sector,Expect ticket cost hikes and loss of revenue to goverment.Instead give contracts to private players for maintenance and cleanliness in Stations and Trains.

We r currently trying to improve the speed of our present trains upto 160-200 km along with laying 6 High Speed tracks as well as starting many dedicated freight corridors...:agree:

The above train is just a tourist attraction to make their stay pleasent as well as earn a few bucks.....:D

Can't believe we still have such a view about privatization. The Indian railways is already in process of a price hike. But if you draw parallels to the airlines and the buses, privatization actually brought down prices due to competition and the service levels went up big time!

Also as long as it is within government control, every major modernization effort will face political opposition and chances of corruption, money laundering etc. Besides, increases accountability for the railways who currently get away with paltry compensation, half of which does not even reach the victim.

Agree with you partly. But govt stands to earn a lot more by collecting service taxes from Private players. Have you checked out the kind of taxes they collect from airlines and private buses? Any government organization is usually a behemoth in India and looses a lot of funds to running the administration that actual operations. Modernzation by privatization allows for a leaner organization which can do it with minimum price hikes. To give you another example, the telephone services! Remember when we paid Rs.15 for incoming mobile phone calls! All that changed with privatization!

Also, privatization is best when the sector is profitable! Who would take on the sector if it isn't???
