Lt General Zubair Mahmood Hayat, one of the leading contenders to become the next chief of the Pakistan Army, has held talks with a senior Chinese military official in Beijing, becoming the first top Pak military official to visit China after the Uri attack.

Lt General Hayat, chief of general staff of the Pakistan Army, held talks with Gen Fang Fenghui, member of China’s Central Military Commission and chief of the Joint Staff Department, state-run China Military Online reported. Although the report did not mention the purpose of the visit, it comes ahead of the scheduled retirement of General Raheel Sharif in November.

Gen Hayat’s trip is also the first time that a senior Pak Army official is visiting China since the attack on an Indian Army base in Uri in September by Pakistan-backed militants that killed 19 soldiers.

Gen Fang Fenghui in his meeting with Gen Hayat said China and Pakistan are “iron brothers” with all-weather partnership. China is willing to make joint efforts with Pakistan to achieve development so as to benefit the peoples of the two countries, the report quoted Gen Fang as saying.

Well quite frankly Indian media is just guessing here.

Lt Gen Zubair Hayat is from the artillery and the serving CGS. As a three-star general, he was previously posted as director general of the Strategic Plans Division (SPD), which is the secretariat of the NCA; and corps commander Bahawalpur. This makes him an ideal choice for the post of CJCSC, who has an almost exclusive jurisdiction over nuclear forces and assets.

It is very rare for someone posted at the SPD to go back to the army. Therefore, many see in his return to the GHQ within a year and half of his transfer to the SPD an ambitious rise to a four-star position.

His postings as CGS and DG SPD afforded him an opportunity to work very closely with PM Sharif and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar.

During his tenure as a major general, he was general officer commanding (GOC) Sialkot and later headed the Staff Duties (SD) Directorate, whose personnel are commonly known in the army as ‘paper tigers’. His stay at the directorate and his earlier posting as principal staff officer to the army chief brought him closer to Gen Kayani, and he is generally seen as Gen Kayani’s protégé.

However, his primary shortcoming is that he has never served in a conflict zone.

Some of those who worked with him describe him as “workaholic” and a “vociferous reader”.

He is also said to have a very sharp memory.

Gen Zubair is a second generation officer. His father retired as a major general, while two of his brothers are generals: Pakistan Ordnance Factories Wah Chairman Lt Gen Omar Hayat and Inter-Services Intelligence DG (Analysis) Maj Gen Ahmad Mahmood Hayat.

Zubair Hayat visit when only two months are left and visit is to China. I think it's enough indication to take a safe guess @Arsalan

I think he would be next COAS
Gen Hayat has been DG SPD too...and has not been posted in areas where Wot has taken place...so most likely he will be CJCSC..since hes the senior most too.... Gen Ashfaq Nadeem, has been both CGS and DGMO, and if i remember correctly, he had been posted in Swat too... So he makes the ideal choice for COAs, IF chosen on merit

I personally like 1 and the 3rd (from left to right)

Rest two lacks in personality.
If you'd hear General Raheel speaking and appearance, he doesn't have an impressive physical personality as well. Its never about good looks but good work at workplace. But ladies like to see Tom Cruise or George Clooney in COAS outfit so I grant you that.

The "Traitor" DAWN has so far produced the best analysis on the subject

My sweet little KID from which angle I am looks like a lady?
And yes army is a disciplined institute but when a civilian has a choice to appoint he would defiantly looks for impressive personality and less hard core military officer.

Well what am i to assume when a poster puts more emphasis on the personality than credentials?

Why Indian media is so interested btw?
Because they know that our P.M have vast interest in India but real danger would be from army chief of Pakistan whoever selected for the post would never compromise on the safety and security of Pakistan.

The two i mentioned both have personality plus experience.

Gen Ramday the third one, mmight be very good...but his appointment as COAS will give wrong impression... It will look more like a political appointment, rather than on merit..since he is nephew of Justice Ramday and thus, political connections withPML N

It will be either Lt Gen Zubair Hayat or Lt Gen Ishfaq Nadeem as next Chief.

Either of them should be COAS....but u never know with Nawaz Sharif... Very unpreddictable...he will look for his personal interest first
