The sources in Islamabad also claim that somebody had already whispered to Nawaz Sharif regarding the background of Lt Gen Haroon Aslam.Yet another reason of Gen Aslam losing the top slot is the opinion of outgoing army chief Gen Kayani who was against the appointment of Haroon on any slot.
This might be the biggest reason. Usually, the person selected to be pitted for next COAS is usually appointed by current COAS as his CGS. Gen Haroon was effectively sidelined by Gen Kayani judging by his assignment and the fact that he wasn't missed on the farewell dinner supports the hypothesis.

its not a military drill of any kind....its just a photo for the media for yours viewing pleasure; what does this have to do with discipline???

go watch the marches sometime, there you'll see discipline

Too much rona dhona on this thread.

not only it disgusts me and the worst part is a lot of the mis-information and empty rants I see here

LET THE ARMY DO ITS JOB, PEOPLE.

Nawaz Sharif is scared of ambitious and capable generals, but he may be in for a surprise with General Raheel as well.

it's always a possibility - if NS decides to make the mistake of repeating history and committing treason against the state.

maybe in that bald-*** head of his - there is some sensibility now; but who know, hard habits die hard.

His brother was also hot headed... at least he was when he was Major and killed Indian Major, by his bare hands. In front of his Sikh regiment.

his brother is a decorated SHAHEED and he had his fair share of kills against the enemy prior to his shahadat

The story of his role and the jawans under him attacking Gurmakhera Bridge + Saboona Ridge reverberates strongly in my head

read about that battle - and the valor of the Pakistani company which he commanded....read about what he and his men did to the reinforcement indian armor that came in to attempt retaking what was taken. A man of initiative, a daring man who had no fear whatsoever except that of Allah SWT

Inshallah the same traditions would be continued to this day - especially in war-time.

Well, I will say a defensive decision taken by PM. It will be challenging for Gen Raheel to command without prior experience of Military Operation and ISI. Usually he had staff appointments but his efforts to set new methodology for LIC training should be appreciated. Best of Luck Gen Raheel and Hope for the Best People.

There are two reasons
1- General Haroon had played a key role as Director of Military Operations on October 12, 1999 alongwith the-then DGMO Major General Shahid Aziz to oust Nawaz Sharif from power. Then, Brigadier Haroon led the team to arrest all the cabinet members, including the then Nawaz. On the other hand the newly-appointed Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Rashad Mahmood was a full colonel working with the Chief of Staff to the Corps HQ on Oct 12, 1999 in Rawalpindi. However, he did not land in any controversy.

General Raheel Credits
1- General Raheel is a key player in developing new counter-insurgency and counter-terror doctrines, whereby the infantry training manual was re-written under his watch
2- His stewardship resulted in fructification of Pakistan Army’s operational thought and doctrinal response to the Cold Start doctrine of Indian Army.
