Lt-Gen (retd) Bilal Akbar

ISLAMABAD: The government has appointed Lt-Gen (retd) Bilal Akbar as Pakistan’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, replacing Raja Ali Ejaz, a career diplomat, who was on his first ambassadorial posting and had been the envoy for about two years.

With this, Islamabad and Riyadh both will be having each other’s ambassadors in their respective capitals from the armed forces since the Saudi ambassador in Pakistan Nawaf bin Saeed Al-Maliki was from the Royal Saudi Navy and retired as Rear Admiral. He was the defence attaché of Saudi mission in Islamabad and elevated as the ambassador here four years ago.

Well-placed diplomatic sources told The News here on Monday that sudden shuffling of ambassador for Saudi Arabia is a conspicuous development with regard to the relationship of two countries in the backdrop of lessening warmth in ties.

Interestingly, relations between Saudi Arabia and India have experienced a marked improvement in recent years. Indian Army Chief for the first time visited the Kingdom late last year. It is understood that General Bilal Akbar will have to bring the relationship with Saudi Arabia back on track and save the relations from further deterioration.

Diplomatic observers say some officials in Pakistan were expecting high echelon delegations from the Kingdom but no schedule has been announced on this behalf, including a high profile visit of Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud, who was believed to be visiting this month.

Good move! An army man is required to deliver a clear cut message from establishment that Saudis should mind their business, and let the Imran Khan's Govt. stay in business by not propping Nawaz Gang and Co.

right.. while another army man is serving as a trophy of MBS leading his cartoon army. Lets not bullshit ourselves in to believing that any of this has to do with welfare of Pakistan. These are political appointments that are made after a lot of lobbying and manipulation. A recently retired General sb, no matter how capable he is, getting this post means an overall degradation of civil foreign service in Pakistan. This is exactly what Bhutto did to civil service when he appointed his own men. The only difference is that these "own men" this time are ex-uniform personnel. 30-40 years down the road our nation will lament this era the same way we lament Bhutto's era. I just hope that there are no crazy jiyallay at that time.

I completely forgot that RS is still there and yes with the ixraelis fully embedded in the kingdom, naturally they will force the house to push Pakistan out of the kingdom and replace em with say indians? with an appointment like the general means that he will report back directly to the security establishment of Pakistan. either way things are disintegrating and being reformed in a different matter.

I personally feel like most of civvies level diplomatic business is already done by now in Gulf and given the arising situation, a direct Ex Military person is the need of hour. Bilal sahib has his reputation. You can say that relationship level from the strategical to military point if view is now gone to 3 to 2. Not everything is Rosey in Gulf. There's dire need of high level security type diplomacy within the palace, with the royals and then with the whole KSA due to sudden shift in politics in M.E.

Rest may be later.

I think that message is clear that our relationship with SA is going to get more complex. A sudden change of Ambassador in Saudia Arabia seems to be a well thought decisions specially when the current Ambassador still has some tenure left to serve in SA. Normally ambassadors get changed at end of their terms. So let’s see what comes out next.

We need a tougher stand on KSA, even a tiny cute puppy of a country like UAE issue threats to Pakistan.
