Louvre Abu Dhabi - Salvator Mundi (Leonardo da Vinci)

I agree.
The irony is that even the buyer himself wasn't prepared for such price tag. But he wanted it at any cost.
I keep thinking that he wasn't alone behind the buy, could be my imagination, but it seems each Louvre wanted a Leonardo center piece...

This has been done in the most great secret.

Otherwise never the Westerners would have allowed the purchase of such a unique artwork by Arabs.

UAE is one of the most visited countries in the world by tourists. Are you aware of this?
not for arts u know that... its a tourist destination or more liek a party place like Vegas...
Mona Lisa was painted by an Italian painter in Italy. Yet it is associated with France and owned by the French state and displayed in France
i know that...but Italy is already rich civ.. it has 2 wonders and its every city has some historic building...

It is your opinion that it is a waste. Many people do not agree and most importantly the buyer did not either.
of course that is true... but I was saying its not an asset ... I mean can you trade it with Russia for S300?

.
A clever step IMO by any means. I am almost certain that the painting (if ever sold again) will be sold for a more expensive price. This is the trend with such unique artifacts if I can call it that due to age.

if it's as i think it will be used... it will not be sold anymore... at least till somthing even greater show up for sell...

Well, I do understand a bit how things work in those types of sell... I did believe the same in the past, but when you see how it works by yourself , with first hand buyers/sellers at such places... you will understand..;that only money is King...
The secrecy behind the buyer/seller is in many cases for " financial matters" and a good exemple was cited in this article when Christies asked" Where does the money come from"...
Since Art is used as an investment and Fund transfer... so the secrecy is most of time linked to such practice... not all the time, but most of it...

And many, many, many others.

Tra Napoleone e Canova. Quelle opere che tornarono dal "Museo Universale"

It's like that, was built the Louvre, in big party looting.

Not necessary and not true.

Because something is lesser known by people and the world as a whole it does not mean that it does not exist.

Not different to much of the Arab world. With the difference being that we have much older heritage than Italy. Not as well-preserved (I do admit that) by large but that is another discussion. Italy or no Italy, nobody has a patent on art in the world. Every culture has its own art. Some have neglected it while others have preserved it better. It is this simple. Personal taste is what eventually will decide.

What has art to do with military hardware? This is a typical discussion between those who deem art useless by large and those who do not. We will never agree.

Was it not a sale between private individuals? The painting was previously owned by a Russian oligarch. So no Westerners involved. Only Christie's (broker). If this had been a sale involving a Western government and a private Arab individual, of course this would have been much less unlikely but not due to the buyer being Arab but due to most states not being willing to sell such art to private individuals. Can you imagine France selling Mona Lisa to some Chinese billionaire? Never bro.

if it's as i think it will be used... it will not be sold anymore... at least till somthing even greater show up for sell...

We will never know but you are probably right. Especially if the region (GCC) will focus more on this type of purchases and creating internationally renowned museums. Qatar was a pioneer on this front not long ago. You might have heard about it if not it is interesting reading.

Anyway I believe that this painting will pay itself many times over eventually.

.
Good Move... That's somthing I back up.
Even if it's overpriced for such painting...
Why u think such overpriced piece n dat too a painting collection is a greta move? Should this money not be spent ideally on defence or something else more productive?

Not only, politics - with all the weight of history - is also important.

I do understand the critics behind the price tag. But Art is a book of knowledge of our past/present and Future. Civilisation were build by remembering the Art of their ancestors... Art is a witness of a part of our Humanity.
When A country/nation/civilisation touch the bottom...only it's Art will stay and keep him alive.
One of the Exemple...is how we speak about The Islamic civilisation or the Greek or the Pharaons etc...

As for if it should be used for Defence or other thing more productive... I do prefer Art, since it's more poxerful than any kind of weapon outthere. and it's the only thing that will not let you down.

There is no politics without money. But I can't deny that in some cases politics play somthing..; mostly if the piece is a matter of National "identity"

Bro its 450 million dollar its not a joke , thats half billion dollars and all this romantic talk of peace and art being bugger weapon has zero effect as we see the current state of the world. Iknow he will get the painting insured but that sum could have been used for lets say rehabilitation of yemenis

You want a percpective of money?

The Entire Louvre Abu Dhabi cost 600+Mil$
The Entire Louvre Project for those incoming 30 years cost 1Bil$
This painting cost 450Mil$

I know it's a very very high price, a little too much IMO, they could have made it at least 100-200Mil less..;if they didn't throw from the start, with bids at 20-50Mil$ each!

But it's a piece that should give an identity to the Museum, like theJoconde etc...

As for Yemen and All.. I have my share of Opinion on thismatter, but it's not the reight thread...

. .
Explain it brother, ugly painting 450 million what is the Hikmat of that piece of shit?
Well, I have none, except my personal views in regards to myself.
It's for you to judge.

But I can give you an exemple: Are you ready to pay for somthing created by per exemple Mehmet the Conqueror or Solyman the Magnificent? if you say yes... then it's the same case... whatever the size or the amount that you give in... it's subjectiv.

ps: I will agree that the price is a little overdue, but as said prviously..; it's a matter of numbers only...

.
I was just thinking of that Russian guy making $250 million in one shot..It is a big achievement to make $1 million, just imagine 259 of it in 25 minutes.. Woahaha!

Revealed: Saudi Crown Prince is the ACTUAL buyer of $450M Leonardo da Vinci painting after he used an obscure royal cousin as his proxy to make the record purchase sale at a NYC auction

  • Saudi royal Bader bin Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Farhan al-Saud was thought to have been the buyer of Leonardo da Vinci's 'Salvator Mundi' painting
  • However, it is now revealed that Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman used Bader as a proxy for the purchase
  • It sold last month for a record breaking $450.3million during a Christie's auction in New York City
  • Painting, which was authenticated in 2011, is now heading to the Louvre Abu Dhabi Museum - the first museum to bear the Louvre name outside of Paris
  • The museum has been billed as 'the first universal museum in the Arab world' in a sign of the oil-rich emirate's global ambitions

It has been revealed Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince was actually the buyer of a $450.3million Leonardo da Vinci painting - and his obscure cousin, who reportedly bought it, was just used as a proxy for the purchase.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bought the record breaking da Vinci painting of Christ according to U.S. government intelligence and a Saudi art-world figure familiar with the purchase, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Farhan al-Saud, a lesser-known figure and a distant relative of the crown prince, was the named winner of the auction, held at Christie's in November.

The Saudi art-world figure said, 'but he is a proxy for MBS (Mohammed bin Salman)'.

The iconic painting, 'Salvator Mundi,' is one of fewer than 20 paintings generally accepted as being from Leonardo Da Vinci's own hand

The Crown Prince being the purchaser of the da Vinici, a painting that was also shrouded in mystery when it first reemerged into the art wold, at least settles who owns it.

The painting depicts Christ in Renaissance clothing holding a glass orb, and art buffs have pointed out that the object appears completely see-through, when in reality the light passing through it should appear distorted.

Bro, usually such invaluable art can be sold once again for a much higher price. That's the good thing with invaluable art. The older it gets and the more times it switches hands, the more expensive it tends to get. What's better some invaluable art, once you get your hand on it, you never sell again. For any price.

BTW the Russian guy is Dmitry Rybolovlev, a Russian oligarch, with an estimated wealth of 7.3 billion USD.

@Bubblegum Crisis

It seems that MbS was the real buyer as I suspected. Not bad. I like the decision. Great that it will stay in the region (UAE) but I would love to see it in KSA one day in a museum. Maybe in say 10 years? Who knows?

Making the first $1 million is the hardest part or so they say. For some it is not (inheritance). Rather you risk wasting that money.
