What's new

Look what Taslima Nasreen wrote in Twitter about Bangladesh

I have read his books...he has not showed any hatred for Muslims in general in either text or speech...infact even with all the death threats he got you would expect him to hate the people who started it...he doesn't show any animosity towards the Ayatollahs either...he only mocks them.
Hen why has his books angered people so much? So there is no work against god etc?

He is an atheist...and he does mock Islam in his writing....it could or could not anger muslims(based on the personal sensibility of the said muslim...whether he can take a joke or criticism or not)....but the majority of the angry muslims never read the book...never even read a summary....Mullahs said..Book Bad Must Kill....the sheeple reacted...got angry and protested against a guy that is not in their country for a book that was not even published in their country....things got heated...protests got intense and the whole world saw the idiocy of the general muslim population.

I tried to read Rushdie.. did not understand a word... Taslima is much more easy to read and understand.

I googled my way through Rushdie...I will probably never try to go through his works again....his books are not meant for people with a general command over English...did you find any "substance" in Taslima's writing? What did you read?

Lajja/Shame ... I was not seeking any substance.. I was just interested in what the fuss is about...

I have read that...the premise was commendable....but she twisted it to a level where the situation was escalated to direct action day type riots...and the unnecessary rape by the victim of a Muslim prostitute she brought at the end was disgusting....another one I read was Shodh...that sealed the deal for me....she seems confused between sexual freedom of woman and the situation of a sex-deprived middle aged woman who cheats on her husband(the husband isn't even cheating on her)...

Midnight's Children was not so tough ! Satanic Verses is his weakest book but gave him most fame !

i have read only lojaa. rape part was unnecessary. the glimpse of her psych which u mentioned from Shodh can be observed in lajja as well where the Lady Kiranmayee wishes for the shadow of male family friend falling on her to turn into real thing !!

I am not very literary minded...my knowledge of English vocabulary is aweful....I found Satanic Verses very interesting...because I doubt there is any other work like Satanic Verses(nobody had ever "took inspiration" from the prophet in this manner before.....this was basically a refined literary version of Python's Life of Brian in a weird way.

It was long time ago so I dont remember much except I was shocked by the openness about female sexuality by a desi female writer... may be she wanted to shock us...

Like Hitchen's she is a contrarian..isn't afraid to take unpopular stances...but Hitchens took his stances based on logical justification(at least to himself) and those stances sometimes happened to be unpopular....I sometimes feel Nasrin takes unpopular stances because they are unpopular trying to create a stir.

Amjad Sabri assassination is purely political not religious. It was an attempt to bring a bad name to ongoing Karachi operation.

I think her intention was to shock us...she was pretty open about sex in the other book I mentioned...it was written a year before Lajja....it wasn't much of a shocker for anyone in Bangladesh....but the emphasis on the gruesome details of the out-of-place rape leads me think it as done to some extent for shock-value.
