JAMMUakistani troops fired at Indian positions in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, violating the bilateral ceasefire twice since Sunday, an army spokesman said on Monday.

"Pakistani troops fired at our positions in Mandi and Garhi areas of the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district late yesterday (Sunday), army spokesman Col. R.K. Kalia told IANS.

The exchange of fire continued till early Monday, he said.

"Pakistan used small arms, automatics and mortars, firing at our positions at 11.30pm on Sunday. Our troops retaliated with equal calibre weapons. Exchange of fire ended at 3.45am today (Monday)," he said.

This was the second violation of the bilateral ceasefire by Pakistan since Sunday in Poonch district.

The ceasefire agreement was signed by the two neighbours in November 2003. It had brought normalcy in the lives of thousands of people living close to the border.

India has been accusing Pakistan of unprovoked violation of the ceasefire agreement since the beginning of the year.

On Friday, external affairs minister Salman Khurshid and Pakistani prime minister's adviser on foreign affairs and national security, Sartaj Aziz, met in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and agreed to respect the LoC ceasefire agreement.

Just two days after the meet, Pakistan violated the ceasefire.

Two injured by Indian shelling

MUZAFFARABAD: A girl and an elderly woman were injured in Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday in shelling by Indian troops from across the Line of Control (LoC), officials and residents said.

The casualties occurred in two villages of Nakial sector in the Kotli district.

Haji Azad, a resident of Nakial sector, said by telephone that shelling began at 9pm on Monday night and continued till 3am, during which Jabar, Dheri, Dabsi, Lakhnal and Lanjot villages were targeted. But there was no loss in overnight shelling.

He said Indian troops resumed shelling at about 8am, using mortar guns.

Kotli Deputy Commissioner Masoodur Rehman confirmed that shelling was severe and had caused two casualties. He identified the victims as Nasrin, 17, of Dheri village, and Naseem Bibi, 50, wife of Mohammad Yousuf of Lanjot village.

Jammu: Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing at Indian positions on the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir late Saturday, an Army spokesman said Sunday.

Indian troops retaliated, and the exchange of gunfire continued till the early hours of Sunday.

"Pakistani troops fired at our positions in Hamirpur area of the LoC in Rajouri without any provocation late last night (Saturday)," defence spokesman Captain S.N. Acharya told a news agency.

"The enemy (Pakistan) used small arms and automatic weapons to target our positions. Our troops retaliated the enemy fire with matching calibre weapons," he said.



"The Pakistani firing started at 11.55 p.m. yesterday (Saturday) and the exchange of gunfire in the area continued till 2 a.m. today (Sunday). No loss occurred on our side," he said.

Pakistan has been since the beginning of this year frequently violating the ceasefire, signed by the two neighbours in November 2003.

India has said the violations of the ceasefire were unprovoked.

Defence sources told IANS that Pakistan has violated the ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir almost 100 times so far this year.

Many residents living close to the LOC in Poonch and Rajouri districts are reported to have shifted families to safer locations because of the increasing firing incidents.

JAMMU: Pakistani troops fired at Indian positions on the line of control (LoC) in Mendhar sector of Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district in yet another violation of the bilateral ceasefire, a defence spokesman said on Wednesday.

"Pakistan troops used small arms and automatics to target our positions in Mendhar sector of the LoC yesterday (Tuesday). Pakistan firing started at 2.30pm," Captain SN Acharya, defence spokesman, told IANS here on Wednesday.

"Our troops retaliated with same calibre weapons and the exchange of firing continued up to 3.30pm. No damage was caused to our troops in this firing exchange," the spokesman added.

The unprovoked firing by Pakistan troops, in yet another violation of the bilateral ceasefire agreement signed by India and Pakistan in November 2003, has coincided with the return of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from the US where he met his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif.

The two prime ministers had agreed to work out a more effective mechanism to stop ceasefire violations on the borders.

Pakistan accuses India of killing a child in Kashmir

Cross-border shelling by Indian army has killed a toddler and wounded five other civilians, said a local administration official on Friday.

MUZAFFARABAD: Pakistani authorities on Friday accused the Indian army of cross-border shelling that killed a toddler and wounded five other civilians in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir.

“A two-year-old boy who was wounded in shelling by Indian troops has died at hospital, while five other wounded persons in Kotli district are still under treatment,” Masood-ur-Rehman, local administration official, told AFP.

He said that three women and two men were also injured in the cross-border shelling in village of Rud Karthar on the Line of Control in Kotli district.

A Pakistani military official also confirmed the death and injuries to the civilians, saying they were the result of mortar shelling by the Indian forces.

“The Indian forces fired mortar shells on the civilian population, which resulted in the death of a young boy and wounds to five other people,” said the senior official at Pakistan Army's headquarters in Rawalpindi. He spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to media.

The Indian and Pakistani forces have exchanged fire many times and killed several people across the heavily militarised de facto border in Kashmir since five Indian soldiers were ambushed and killed on August 5.

Delhi blamed the August 5 killings on the Pakistani army, but Islamabad denied any responsibility and has called for restraint and dialogue.

The Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan met in New York on Sunday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session and pledged to restore calm on their disputed border in Kashmir.

A deadly flare-up along the LoC in January brought a halt to peace talks that had only just resumed following a three-year hiatus sparked by the 2008 attacks in Mumbai that killed 166 people.

India blamed Pakistani militants for the attack.

Poonch: Pakistani troops on Thursday resorted to firing and shelling on Indian posts along the LoC in Poonch district, the latest in a series of violations of the 2003 ceasefire in the region.


Pakistani troops opened small arms firing and shelling of mortar bombs on Indian posts along LoC in Dera Basi-Balakote-Mendhar forward areas in Poonch from 1400 hours today, police officials said.

The firing was on when the last reports came in as Indian troops guarding the border line took positions and retaliated effectively resulting in exchanges, they said.

There was no loss of life or injury in the firing, according to police.

There have been 127 ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops along LoC in Jammu and Kashmir this year, which is highest in past eight years.
