Like a toy': Girl, 3, attacked by 'service' dog in restaurant

A three-year-old girl has been left needing 15 stitches after a ‘service’ pit bull bit her face during a vicious attack.

Cleveratta Gordon-Waldroup said her daughter, Ronin Waldroup, was in tears as the dog, which was wearing a service dog coat, attacked the little girl at a Texas restaurant on Saturday (local time).

Ronin walked a few steps ahead of her parents to get some chicken nuggets and came face-to-face with the animal.

‘She just dropped like a rag doll’

Family friend Kimberly Parker witnessed the attack.

"It had a hold of her face shook her. The lady pulled on the leash, the dog released her and she just dropped like a rag doll,” she told Fox45 News.

As Ms Gordon-Waldroup assessed her child to see if she was ok, she says the woman and her dog left the restaurant in a hurry.

“The owner of the dog decided to run from the scene of the crime,” Ms Gordon-Waldroup said.

Ronin was taken to hospital and had 15 stitches sewn into her face.

Doctors told her parents she would have minimal scarring but would need to see a plastic surgeon.

Ms Gordon-Waldroup has started a GoFundMe fundraiser to help pay for her daughter’s medical bills and track down the owner of the dog.

“I'm begging for justice for my little girl,” she wrote on the page that has so far raised over $13,500.

A heartbroken Ms Gordon-Waldroup told Fox45 she recently walked in on her daughter smothering makeup over her face in an effort to hide the wounds on her face.

“She's trying to put makeup on her face when I asked her why she's doing that. For a three-year-old to turn to me and say, 'Mommy, I'm ugly' - It's earth-shattering,” she said.

Ms Gordon-Waldroup said she doesn’t believe the dog who attacked her daughter was a certified service dog and suspects the pet owner had simply placed a false coat on so she could bring it inside the restaurant.

“We love service animals of all breeds and sizes but as we are going through this we are finding more information that just about anyone can purchase a service animal vest online or wherever to have their pet out in public,” she wrote on GoFundMe.

After Ronin’s medical bills are paid for, Ms Gordon-Waldroup will use the rest of the money toward attempting to change the laws surrounding service animal registration.

“We will be proactive in changing the laws for service animals and training…whether we have to go through the courts system or take it all the way up to the lawmakers we know that with proper legal action we can change the course of action for future circumstances,” she wrote

Local police have now identified the dog’s owner and are investigating the incident.

In my childhood in my neighborhood a "small" Pomeranian dog chased me round and round, even through a ditch on the road, while the dog's owners stood around and laughed.

Had I not heeded my the advise of my friends there and stood still I would have been bitten by the dog.

I disagree, size of the dog is not an issue, its the training and the owner that is the problem. I have had pitbulls currently have a japanese Akita both are big dogs but were trained properly.

I have always insisted on this, there are no bad dogs only bad owners, the dog will do what its trained to do. In this case it was attacking and defending his turf. In this case the idiot owner has this dog trained as a guard dog hence the reaction.

Poor thing. That might be more mentally challenging for her to get over being scared of any dog now and for who knows how long.

I do have an issue with laying all the blame on the owner of the dog. First of all, it's a service dog which everyone knows is not meant to be petted or even interacted with. The parents of the girl should've been aware of that and even if they weren't, they shouldn't have allowed the girl to run ahead of them and end up face to face with the dog. So they share some responsibility here as well.

The dog owner fleeing is a big problem for him/her also.

Actually it can be much worst, just last year a maid (women) was killed by a dog in Indonesia.

I think most people are missing the fact that this was a "service dog" and not a regular pet dog. Conditions are much different in the case of a service dog as they are specifically trained to assist their owner and cannot be distracted or petted or allowed to interact with other people.

The dog probably saw the girl as a threat to its owner when she ran up to him and was face to face with him like it says and reacted like a service dog would to protect its owner.

The owner should be arrested, fined or face jail. There's no way a properly trained dog would react like that to a child. That's just crazy, especially grabbing the child by the face, that's a killing move.
The dog needs to be put down as soon as possible. Pity there wasn't an concealed carry permit holder there to put five rounds into the dog's skull. It's just a matter of time before it attacks another child, and it might be far worse.
I say this all being a dog lover.
Not linked to this story and a general comment, I've seen children walk up touch (innocently), or at times deliberately annoy a dog. No child should ever go up to any dog that is not theirs. People who have children simply think it's child's play and laugh it off. Animals do not operate along human guidelines.

Totally agree.
I once had 2 Pit Bulls.
The true bred one is only aggressive to other dogs and cats, never ever to humans like my other dogs.
It is the only big dog that will fully relaxed onto my arms when carried around.

The non true bred is quite aggressive, but both Pit Bulls will not attack my other 11 big dogs and my cats, but strict control is needed when there is a female on heat in the neighborhood.

Most people thought they are biten by the dog when all they got was the dog holding on to them and their teeth penetrate slightly into their skins.
Wait till they get a real bite with tooth at least 20mm to 30mm into their flesh and shake.
Take at least 3 months to heel.
Pit Bull teeth are extra sharp and curved inwards, that is why it is difficult to release from their bite.

And yeah, I got stitches on my face when I tried to pull my Pitt Bull away from killing my Doberman.
My Pit Bull released its bite immediately and did not do the shake as soon as it realized its mistake.
So this "service" Pit Bull is definitely not a true breed and NOT PROPERLY TRAINED.

Thats what happened to other dogs that dare challenge my Pit Bull.
Luckily for them, I know how to release the bite of a Pit Bull, from watching Youtube, haha.
