The delegation took part in the work of the summer university of the Polisario Front and SADR officials, held in Boumerdes, Algeria, from 3 to 23 August 2014, under the name of Gdeim Izik.


The delegation members were mistreated, their papers and personal belongings were confiscated by the Moroccan police, and they were prevented from using the toilet or recharging the phone batteries, said the source.

Algiers — Morocco's sovereignty in Western Sahara is recognized by no state, said Tuesday in Algiers the Secretary General of the Union of Saharawi Workers Mohamed Cheikh Lahbib.

"Morocco's sovereignty on Western Sahara is recognized by no state. Morocco seeks to get a foothold in the Sahel and borders in the region," the Sahrawi official said at El-Moudjahid forum, underlining Morocco's "expansionist" policy.

A policy which, he said, represents a danger to Maghreb's stability but also the Sahel, regarding Morocco's ambitions.


Lahbib recalled, in this context, the Moroccan secret services' contribution to the creation of the Movement for Unity and Jihad in Western Africa, author of the recent abduction of western expatriates in the Sahrawi refugee camps of Tindouf (Southeast of Algeria).

He said that Morocco is trying to "flood" the region's population with cannabis, of which it is considered as the world's major provider with up to 82%, noting the conjunction of this traffic with organized crime.

Spanish delegation banned from visiting occupied territories of Western Sahara

El Aaiun (Occupied Teritories), September 1, 2014 (SPS) - The Moroccan authorities prevented Saturday a Spanish delegation from entering the occupied city of El Aaiun, Western Sahara.

The delegation which consisted personalities representing the associations of solidarity with the Sahrawi people in Castilla y Leon, was led by the mayor of Zamora, Miss Rosa Valdion, from the Popular Party, reported the Spanish media europa press.

The delegation announced that their visit aims at “finding out about the situation of the Sahrawi people and establishing cooperation, social and humanitarian relationship with it.”

The mayor of Zamora condemned the act saying that “the expulsion is not justified (…) and can only be interpreted that Morocco do not want witnesses to what the Sahrawi people are subjected to in colonized territories.” (SPS)

In global politics, playing by the rules doesn’t always help.

LAAYOUNE, WESTERN SAHARA — On a recent Saturday in May, as dusk shaded into night in this desert city, more than a thousand women, men, and children poured into the streets. They chanted slogans for independence; flashed the peace sign to show their support for the Polisario Front; and waved the illegal red, green, and black flag of a nation that may never exist.

For anyone who isn’t a geography buff, it’s likely that the Polisario Front, and perhaps even Western Sahara, are unfamiliar names. A former Spanish colony now annexed and ruled by neighboring Morocco, this territory has been waiting four decades for a shot at independence it was promised but never received. After a half-century of global decolonization that has produced about 80 new nations throughout the world, Western Sahara is now by far the largest piece of land remaining on the United Nations’ list of “non-self-governing territories,” places it considers to have an unfulfilled right to decide their own futures.

In part because their campaign has been a civil one, it has unfolded almost totally outside the world’s sphere of attention. Elsewhere on the continent, civil war has split Sudan into two countries; self-immolation and riots have brought regime change across North Africa. Here, meanwhile, even though the UN, the United States, and most other powerful nations have never recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the area, the independence movement has been unable to make headway.

Today, the Sahrawis are becoming increasingly frustrated, and politics are making the prospects of independence more distant, if anything. The Moroccan government has shown no sign of loosening its grip. Officials worry about Islamic militants fomenting violence, given Polisario’s backing by rival Algeria; furthermore, Morocco relies on the territory’s fisheries and phosphate mines, and has begun exploring for oil. Its allies in the West, including the United States, prize Morocco as a stable ally in a volatile region, and aren’t moving to force its hand.

The stalemate here in Africa’s last remaining colony, and the willingness to let it simmer as the world focuses on deadlier conflicts in nearby Mali and Syria, raise the uncomfortable question of whether a peaceful breakup of nations is really possible—even when the process, officially speaking, enjoys the full support of the UN. Western Sahara is emerging as a case study on the limits of the international community’s power to help a people win self-determination when they choose not to be violent, but to follow the rules.

ArabsToday, by Redouane Mabchour (Rabat, Morocco, June 5, 2013) — Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has voiced support for UN supervised talks to resolve the Western Sahara conflict, confirming that Turkey doesn’t recognise the Polisario Front movement.

Speaking during a joint press conference with his Moroccan counterpart Abdelilah Benkirane in Rabat, Erdogan claimed that an improvement in Algerian-Moroccan relations would aid resolution of the Western Sahara conflict, hinting at his country’s plans to mediate peace talks between the two countries.

The Turkish prime minister praised the people of Morocco for their transition to democracy, terming recent elections as “Morocco’s Arab spring.”

He argued that Morocco’s democratic model could serve as a glowing example for emerging countries in the region.

Erdogan mentioned economic cooperation with Morocco several times throughout his speech, and called for “balanced” trade between the two countries. He also urged Benkirane’s government to simplify the methods of investment for Turkish entrepreneurs looking to invest in Morocco.

The senior Turkish politician disclosed that his 300-member delegation includes 115 businesspeople, adding that they are from 85 different Turkish companies generating between $45 billion a year.

Erdogan confirmed that Morocco’s King Mohammed VI will visit Turkey by the end of 2013, to consolidate Turkish-Moroccan relations, and encourage the development of trade.

Meanwhile, Moroccan PM Benkirane has apologised to Moroccan Employers’ Federation for the state failure to consult them before Erdogan’s visit, after the federation announced it would boycott the meeting between Moroccan and Turkish businesspeople.

Benkirane said the trade union had every right to feel aggrieved at not being consulted during preparation for the Turkish’s delegation’s visit, and described the federation as “a partner of the government in economic development.”
