Leonardo DiCaprio invests in two lab-grown meat startups

New York, Sept 22 (AFP) Sep 22, 2021

US actor and climate activist Leonardo DiCaprio has taken an investment in two different lab-grown meat startups, the companies announced Wednesday.

DiCaprio has bought an unspecified stake in Aleph Farms and Mosa Meat, two companies developing protein products grown from cow cells -- an emerging area in the growing alternative meat market.

The Academy Award-winning actor will also act as an advisor to the companies, said a joint press release from Israel-based Aleph Farms and Netherlands-based Mosa Meat.

"One of the most impactful ways to combat the climate crisis is to transform our food system," DiCaprio said in the news release. "Mosa Meat and Aleph Farms offer new ways to satisfy the world's demand for beef, while solving some of the most pressing issues of current industrial beef production."

The announcement comes on the heels of earlier investments by the "Titanic" star in publicly traded Beyond Meat, which sells burgers and sausages made from plants.

Aleph Farms "grows beef steaks, from non-genetically engineered cells isolated from a living cow, without harming animals and with a significantly reduced impact to the environment," while Mosa Meat "introduced the world's first cultivated beef hamburger in 2013, by growing it directly from cow cells," according to the press release.

Alternative meat advocates characterize such ventures as a critical component of addressing climate change.

Conventional livestock management is a source of greenhouse gases through the clearing of trees to make room for animal feed production and the raising of livestock, and emissions from the animals themselves.

But while plant-based meat has made its way to mainstream supermarkets, cultivated meat remains at a much earlier stage of commercialization. Costs remain high, and thus far only Singapore has approved the sale of such products.

Won't eat this sh!t. Ever

Indeed but ordinary folks will be forced to eat this shi.t. They will do it by converting "Live Animals Meat" as luxury item and thus it will have a very high price which only very rich will be able to afford.

Why not ? It's real meat.

And imagine carrying the tech to build these cells to Mars. The next thing can be such tech to build milk and omelette.

Why even luxury item, live animals need no longer be slaughtered.

You didn't say what's your objection.

I don't trust this meat. It can taste and look like meat but I don't trust it. Also religious issues which might not be a concern for you but they are very important for me

That Dutch company Mosa Meat has been developing this since 2013. They would have found any harmful effect by now. I am sure they have eaten it themselves. You can go to their website and check this.

1. So you won't do this even for the good of the world ?

2. How will you carry a cow or buffalo to Mars and how will you maintain it there ?

I would have loved to see this in India but alas our govt is too conservative to even allow cultivation of GMO crops in our country, this far too much to even consider.

I would say this technically will be even easier than talking about GMO. The meat product here will be real meat but without killing any animal which would gone down well with the cultural beliefs of many in India. I have spoken of this topic a few times before on the forum.

I like eating meat and it would be wonderful for my sentiments if obtaining my meat doesn't involve killing.

No

1. No

2. I won't carry anything to mars since nobody is going there

I would love to switch to lab grown meat if the taste is similar. Wouldn't mind paying even double the price for it as it doesn't involve killing an animal. It will be a roaring success in India if implemented.

.
its just fossil fuel companies trying to divert attention away from their contributions to global warming and trying to pin the blame on livestock.
hence they are the ones who are funding this. Leonardo di Caprio is probably hired as a spokesperson. who uses his image to legitimize their propaganda.

.

You are being unreasonable.

I am right now multi-tasking by watching a YT livestream space conference organized by the Indian Space Research Organization and the theme for today is Australia. The Australian Space Agency's chief spoke of his country having a Mars program ( he didn't say manned or unmanned - this will probably come later in the conference ) for which they are collaborating with other agencies / countries.
