These days all Chinese scientists are publishing articles in English top journals, which qualifies them to get generous awards from the government.

So Chinese publishing is declining, especially in quality, as quality papers are without exception published in top recognized journals, which are almost all in English.

the quality of top chinese publications only inceases on the same pace with the papers on top english publications from china, because basically they are from the same authors. those top scholars will only push the overall quality of chinese academic research to a higher level, instead of downgrading it. they will also serve as peer reviewers or editors on the chinese publications.

To my surprise, there are 13 chinese institutions on top 100, and 7 on top 50 of Nature publication index, where the US dominance is so overwhelming.

There is a little feedback that I wanna give to you regarding this issue. China has a lot of top tier scientist who can make very prestigious publications. However because of the language barrier, some of the Chinese scientist who are trained in China are becoming disadventaged. You can learn English, but it's still harder to make science with a language other then your own. It's never like the mother tongue. Scientific information should be translated to Chinese and Chinese should more and more become a language of Science.

those journals represent the most respectable publications in fundamental sciences. however, unlike most western developed countries, fundamental sciences are not on the top of funding list in china. most of the money goes to applied sciences, especially engineering. so u see the chinese institutions in top 100 of nature index, but some of the top money suckers in china are not even in this list, because fundamental research are not their focus.
