What's new

Latest count: China has 1.341 billion people

Not really because China is almost three times larger than India by land area, and India's population is quickly catching up to China's.

What he's saying is that China population is mainly concentrated in the coastal areas and the rest of China isn't quite habitable

I know what he is saying. He says that half of china's land is uninhabitable, I'm saying that even if you take half away, the space available for living in china is still 1.5 time greater than whole of india.

US, by contrast, has very good geographical make up. There is alot more room for growth for her. (especially if they can reduce their per capita living cost.)

.
Yeah but I'd like to point out that 0.6 above the replacement rate (2.1) for a population of 1.2 billion is a lot more significant than say the 3.8 of Saudi Arabia's 20 million.

Certainly ,judging the above data, The drop in fertility rate seem uniform ,for example for every 5 years the drop is 0.4.

So by 2015,we can expect it to come to 2.1 .

Oh I know what he's trying to say.

Agree about the US though, my parents travel back and forth between Ontario and Missouri. Despite what most people think the middle of America is actually very fertile land and nice weather, just a bit boring, that's all.

Let's hope so excessive population growth negates the benefits to the standard of living brought on by GDP growth. Why the name change dude?

Big endless grasslands. That's why I think even if in the event that the US economy falters and the country is unstable for a few decades, if regained control at a lower living standard then opening up economy and population growth she may well go through what china is going through now decades down the track, while our situation will be more similar to theirs right now.

So US has serious long term competition potential alongside china.

Well there's a thought... but it may be thinking way way too far down the line.

China missed out big time during the age of discovery. I wonder what it would be like in a world where North America, Australia, NZ territories is under sinosphere influence.

Both my parents came from families of five (two parents + three kids), and that was a long time ago.

Even rural families don't have more than 2-3 kids.

Similar with my family. My grandfather had 10 kids, know all of these kids(dad and uncles, aunts) all have 1-2 kids. More people are just having 2 kids, instead of like 6. My family is from Kerala, I dont know whats happening in other states how ever.

I think birth control needs to be promoted even more.. I think it would led to huge improvements.

I think urbanization is a better option

For instance my dad was the 14th child in his family and my Mom just had one sibling.
The difference: my grandparents of my dads side were villagers and Mom side were from the city.

Also,i recall birth control pills when introduction had its own consequences
