If this is a 'freedom struggle' I must say India never had one. No this is Islamist fundamentalism. They want Nizam e Mustafa. Some of the most popular quotes I hear here in Lal Chowk are like this - (even if the issue is load shedding!)
1) Kashmir ka matlab kya hain? La ilaha il allah!
2) Kashmir mein kya chalega - Nizam e Mustafa
3) Hum kya chahte - Azadee (most popular)
4) Ay Kafiro ay Zalimo Kashmir hamara chod do
5) Asi Gachchi Pakistan, Bhattav Roas Te Bhattyenav Saan -Only this one is in Kashmiri - roughly translates to We have/want Pakistan, without Pandit men(Bhatt = Pandit men) but with Pandit women(Bhattyen = Pandit women)
So actually it is only the predominantly Sunni Kashmiris of Kashmir valley of the entire state of JnK who hate kafir rule. Kashmir was a Shaivaite area just a couple of centuries back. And now it has been all wrapped up in history. Eben if the most ardent Islamist reads about the reign of Sikander of Kashmir, it will melt even his heart. The Pandits were always treated like shyt in Kashmir - as far as I remember - even before the exodus. The words cowards and Pandit were almost synonymous. Also interesting thing to note is that the separatist sentiment is strong in Srinagar, Poonch and Sopore. Elsewhere is not the dominant strain. This is my personal observation though. Again in all districts except Srinagar there is little support for Pakistan.
Things have now changed a lot in the Valley though. The police presence is minimal. (The army was withdrawn long back, the CRPF remained). This time the situation was much more like any other busy thoroughfare in India. Unlike in the past days, Kashmiris are also moving out of the Valley to all over India for work just like other Indians. Narrow minded communalism is in decline and rapid Hinduphobia is coming down as well. In fact several temples(including the Kheer Bhawani) which were desecrated before are being looked after by the same Kashmiri Muslims. But yes hatred for kafirs won't die down overnight. But things are improving.
