KARACHI: A three-member delegation of the Korean Air, led by its Managing Vice President Song Bo, called on Trade and Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) SM Muneer at his office on Thursday and said that the airline is seriously considering making a comeback to Pakistan.

The Korean delegation apprised the TDAP CEO that the purpose of its visit was to study the possibility/feasibility of the Korean Air’s operation in the future, including exploration of various avenues of cooperation between Korea and Pakistan.

SM Muneer briefed the Korean Air’s delegation about the trade potential between Pakistan and Korea. He explained that if airline would open up its operations from Pakistan, it certainly gets huge business, as Pakistan is exporting fresh fruits and seafood products to far eastern countries and the businessmen would use Korean Air as their carrier for export of perishable items.

He said that a huge vacuum of air cargo and passenger flights to far eastern countries has been created in Pakistan and the Korean Air should exploit this great opportunity of aviation business.

Song Bo said on the occasion that they are impressed with the trade activities in Pakistan and he would inform the top management of the airline about the business opportunities in Pakistan. Operating direct flight of Korean Air from Pakistan would not only increase Pakistan’s exports to Korea but also boost Korean exports of perishable products to Pakistan and far eastern markets, he added.

Good! We need competition, its the only way to bring ticket prices down

This is very good news.
It highlights two things:
1-That the economy is really working, hence the rising demand for air travel. I mean, Emirates has 6 daily to Karachi now. Turkish was on select days a few years ago with a narrow body 737, now it is daily with A330.
2-The vacuum left by Cathay Pacific, Singapore and Malaysian airlines needs to be fulfilled....there are not many options to go from Pakistan toward east other than Air China/Thai airways. So Korean air would be welcome.

Good news. But I still think PIA and local airlines should improve. Political hiring in PIA should be kicked out imediately, from last 7 years these hiring has eaten up airlines from inside.

The airport taxes in Pakistan are ridiculous and make operation in Pakistan a bit more expensive then usual and makes travel nonfeseable.. Also workshops in airports has to improve to make these plans workable for longer period.

I agree with @Fracker , PIA should be improved in its operational capabilities and flight routes. Otherwise we will be giving our market away to other airlines PIA fleet will be sold out to corrupt CEOs and their private airlines.

PIA will only improve if there is competition unfortunately. In a competitive market either it will have to improve or it will die and as it stands it is already walking towards its death slowly anyways. Might as well bring in some competition to give its management the incentive to improve things lest they too become history.

Competition will not have a slight impact on PIA. Competition or no competition PIA will fail with current employees and management. Matter of fact there are many matric pass engineers (with some local certification) are maintaining plans . customer feedback has no impact inside plan management.

Despite the high airport taxes, people are still travelling. All the harmkhor black money peddlers travel business class anyway. Tax the shyt out of them...something like With holding Tax, that proper taxpayers get their tax refunded.

Also, PIA cannot provide the capacity on the eastern routes....they can hardly manage their domestic operations.

Why not buy PIA?

Great idea. When I saw the thread title though my first thought was 'don't they alreayd operate in Pakistan'? Because I distinctively remember seeing a Korean Air office somewhere in Karachi few years back. Seems that because of law and order they must've left, and now will hopefully return. All the best, Korean Air.

We do now. Plenty of people going to China/Thailand/Vietnam/Korea for business.

Within the next 5-10 years, the demand will only increase.
