My reasoning is simple the distance made it unsustainable in the long run. Pakistan tried to turn Bangladesh into a colony to try and get around that but they did not have the economic or military backbone to sustain that either. Autonomy was the only other solution and that would be equal to independence anyway.

The biggest loss was in terms of manpower but that was not such a loss either considering the Bangladeshis were not willing to assimilate with the Urdu speaking West and the West was not willing to assimilate with the Bengali speaking East. It was a recipe for disaster to begin with and politics just hastened its eventual demise.

Trust me the war in Afghanistan was the main catalyst that cemented their eventual collapse. That is what they teach in the history books here in the West as well.

nope..there are several reasons behind this and one of them is high military spending,you may say that it is due to afghan war,but it is tradition of soviet union all along..its economy failed completely..but that is not due to afghan war..

Their economy was in ruins when they went into Afghanistan and by the time they came out they couldn't even support their various satellite states any longer removing all aid. There is a reason Afghanistan is called the graveyard of empires, it really is a graveyard for empires.

No, I agree they helped Pakistan but I believe that at first they looked the other way as to what RAW and KGB were doing in East Pakistan until the President literally forced them into getting involved for Pakistan.
