Not really. The time for political maneuvering is long over. ALL the political parties and ALL the people are in support of the state government's stance on mullapperiyar. Its still an "if", but not very "BIG". Mostly a question of "when"......and this "when" is without a huge tolerance limit. Most likely a tolerance limit of "this month" or the "next".

i have one question. if the new damn is being planned and is still in its conception stage then it will take a very long time to be built ? what happens if something happens during that time ? is their any contingency plan for a situation like that ? i think both states will be in trouble.

Mullaperiyar issue: HC asks Kerala govt about safety measures

The Kerala high court on Tuesday asked the state government to inform it about the safety measures taken anticipating threat to the 116-year-old Mullaperiyar dam. A division bench comprising Acting Chief
Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice P R Ramachandra Menon directed Advocate General K P
Dhandapani to inform the court by Wednesday morning the immediate measures being taken by the government.


The bench held that prevention was better than cure.

The direction was issued on a petition by advocate Rajamannar seeking for a direction to Idukki district collector to take immediate steps for draining water from the dam and three other nearby dams on a war footing.

The petitioner also sought the construction of internal chambers and compartments in the four dams for safety.

Meanwhile, former MLA K Krishnankutty also approached the high court seeking a direction to Kerala Dam Safety Authority (KDSA) to immediately start exercising its powers and duties with respect to Mullaperiyar dam, conduct an inspect and issue direction to state government to ensure safety of the dam and to prevent any damage to it.

The petitioner also sought that the KDSA's "failure" to perform its statutory function to be declared illegal.

The petitioner is likely to come before court on Wednesday.

Increase in inflow into the reservoir touching slightly above the maximum permissible storage level of 136 feet has heightened fears about the safety of the dam among people in the area and adjoining districts.

Kerala and Tamil Nadu are locked in a dispute over the dam. While Kerala is arguing for construction of a new dam at Mullaperiyar in place of the existing one, Tamil Nadu is against this, saying it would deprive water for irrigation to five districts of the state.

GUYS ! Great news ! I was just watching the news telecast...

Oomen chandy just announced kerala will go ahead with their own plan to create a new dam without procuring any sort of "consent" from the tamilians if they keep stalling the issue !

Most of the times our politicians are all talk and no action. Enthaokayayirunnu Smart city, BMW plant, Nokia plant, Aana , Ambari and in the end nothing.

they are insensitive to Kerala's worry. reaping free water from Mullaperiyar made them conclude that it is tamilnadu's birth right. it is not. The History of that Dam itself is the work of madras(under british colonialists) forcing an agreement with Travancore Rajah.

It is not a thing to discuss or wait for supreme court order when 33Lakhs peoples Lives are in acute danger. the Dam must be decommissioned soon. Water Level must be kept below 120feets NOW. We are accepting their demand for water . that itself must be considered a favour from Kerala state.

We don't need TN's permission but we need clearances from various Central ministries the most important of which is the Central Environment Ministry, so as to get the necessary finance for the project. My solution..impose a "Mullaperiyar Tax' in Kerala and raise the money needed locally.

bit old news MGr's letter on mullaperiyar issue

New Delhi: In a dramatic twist to the dam row, Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan on Tuesday dragged late chief minister M G Ramachandran into the Mullaperiyar conflict.

Achuthanandan has claimed that MGR had assured the then central government that the water level of the dam would not be increased above 136 feet.

The Chief Minister also had a copy of the letter written by MGR to then prime minister Charan Singh, which he released at a press conference at Thiruvananthapuram.

In the letter MGR had said that he would take immediate steps to strengthen the dam. The letter was written in reply to a letter by Charan Singh that said that urgent action was needed to strengthen the dam.

An excerpt from Ramachandran's letter goes as follows: "After discussions with government of Kerala and Tamil Nadu officials, certain proposals have been made for the immediate strengthening of the dam for provision of additional spilling capacity and for keeping the reservoir level at 136 feet."

Achuthanandan said he would use the letter as evidence if the dam issue was dragged to the Supreme Court. He also said that Tamil Nadu's claim that the dam had been strengthened was dubious as was evident from the leakage there.

According to a PTI report, Achuthanandan reiterated that the Karunanidhi government was under "political pressure" from AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa and MDMK leader Vaiko to increase the height of the dam.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Karunanidhi had decided to pull out of the Mullaperiyar talks.

"It appeared that Karunanidhi was forced to withdraw from talks due to the pressure put on him by Jayalalithaa and Vaiko disregarding the Supreme Court observation and the mediation efforts of the Centre," Achuthanandan told PTI.
