Am not talking about individuals. Am talking about Singapore AS A COUNTRY AND AS A POLITICAL ENTITY.
Do you really believe that all your talk of your Chinese ethnic ties will make Singapore the equal of China and that China will treat Singapore as a peer? Even someone as obtuse as you are must realize -- NEVER. An individual cannot do much. He/she can and will be absorbed into the mainstream. But a country is a different entity. A country cannot move. It is always visible for all to see its geographical and therefore political distinctiveness.
Never said the US is perfect. The fact that people like continually focus on perfection is actually a positive because that is the standard for US while lower standards are for everyone else.
If you want to use 'banana' as a pejorative, understand that you are ALREADY a country of 'bananas' whether you recognized it or not. It started when Singapore -- under the directive from Lee -- will use English as a 'working language'. Your governmental structure is not of China. So is your economy and finance system.
You should take a more serious look at psychology and cultural studies. Three things that usually change a people irrevocably:
- How they communicate
- How they are governed
- How they live
The China of today is not the China of yesterday no matter how many Confucius 'institutes' China builds. Your roots are not supposed to be your shackles and the worst type of shackle is political. Your Singapore made it clear that despite the individual Chinese ancestry, as a collective, Singaporeans WILL be a different people. You are already a country of 'bananas'.
Don't be silly.
Singapore is 5 million strong, is multi-cultural and multi-racial, how can it be like China.
In your dreams only will China treat us as equals, but then some of us would rate themselves as superior to them.
It also doesn't help that some Chinese nationals who come here are either very rich or politically connected and behave arrogantly.
Sorry to disappoint you, but Lee Kuan Yew made sure the locals don't lose their connection with China.

Speak Mandarin Campaign
the promotion of Chinese culture in general among Chinese Singaporeans.
Singaporeans would also learn their respective mother tongues, such as Mandarin, Malay and Tamil, so as to remain in touch with their culture and heritage.
Unfortunately you are right that there are many bananas, especially the younger generation.
Cannot be helped, we are exposed to a lot of fake news and highly effective propaganda from the world's hegemon and we cannot quarantine ourselves totally as we sadly still need their protection and trade.
Some will succumb to these anti China rhetoric including myself is not immune.
And No, if you come to Singapore and observe, the Malays, Indians and Chinese are friendly with each other but don't group together and the Chinese identify themselves as "Huaren" or Chinese.
Terms like "that Indian", "that Malay", "that Chinese" are common.
Each group will speak their language or dialects within their groups and use English between the races.
This is not a melting pot, there is very little mixing but don't mean the various races cannot work together.
We like it this way, during Chinese holidays, the others will work, and vice versa.
