In the din of large scale injuries caused by pellets fired by armed forces in Kashmir, the number of protesters hit by the lethal bullets has gone unnoticed. A data analysis of the injured treated in Valley’s hospitals has revealed that more than 234 persons were injured when the forces fired bullets, and about 2000 injured have been treated in peripheral hospitals of Kashmir since the protests began on July 8.
South Kashmir
The worst hit district during the ongoing protests has been the ruling Peoples Democratic Party’s electoral stronghold Anantnag district in south Kashmir where 559 civilians have been injured since Valley erupted in street protests following militant commander Burhan Wani’s killing. Eighty Six civilians received in hospitals of the district had been hit by bullets and 312 injuries were caused by the pellets. Forty five patients were referred to Srinagar for advanced treatment, according to health officials.
In another south Kashmir district – Kulgam, 101 civilians were injured during the protests because of bullets fired by forces and 115 people of the total 350 injured in the district were a result of pellets.
A senior health official said 40 persons with eye injuries caused by pellets were received in district hospital Pulwama. “One hundred twenty (120) people were injured in the district and 18 had bullet injuries but 57 of the injured had suffered pellet injuries. Forty five people had been hit by teargas shells,” the official said. In Shopian,186 civilians were injured.
North Kashmir
In north Kashmir, the situation has not been any different either. Two hundred thirty two (232) civilians have been injured by bullets, pellets and stones thrown by police and paramilitary forces in Baramulla district. Of these, 126 have been hit by pellets and five of the protesters have received bullet injuries.
In border district Kupwara where five people have been killed during the ongoing protests, 226 civilians were injured and 16 of the injured had received bullets. Around 200 people were injured in Bandipore district, according to the data provided by district administration.
Central Kashmir
In Central Kashmir, 338 patients in Valley hospitals at district levels were referred to Srinagar hospitals for advanced treatment. At Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) hospital in Srinagar where most of the injured were received – either directly or referred, from Srinagar and other districts of Kashmir, 531 injured had been received by Thursday afternoon. Fifty two of the injured had bullet injuries and over 350 had been hit by pellets.
According the government response submitted in Jammu & Kashmir High Court on Tuesday 185 patients were admitted in the Ophthalmology department of SMHS hospital and 130 of them needed secondary intervention because of the severity of problem. “Twenty (20) patients have bilateral eye injury out of which three patients are badly injured (in eyes),” the government counsel said in written response to the court.
Twenty seven (27) of the injured 142 protesters admitted in Sher I Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences had bullet injuries and 11 of the 165 patients treated at the institute’s affiliated Jhelum Valley College had too received bullets. Ten (10) protesters were injured in Budgam district and 46 people suffered bullet and pellet injuries in Ganderbal district of central Kashmir.
