There was recently a news item about the UN showing Kashmir as a separate country. The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) have inserted Jammu & Kashmir in the “Country/Geographical area” section in their “Advanced search for Civil Society Organization”.

This gives an impression of the State being treated as a separate country by the UN. Well, just showing Kashmir as a separate country may not change its present physical position but somehow it reminds one about the Kashmir’s ancient history when it was an independent sovereign country. It would be interesting to recapitulate that part of the history.

The first references about Kashmir being an independent sovereign country are from the Greek sources. The Ptolemy’s geography depicts Kashmir as a country called KASPEIRA which is supposed to enclose a large portion of land including parts of Punjab, North-West Provinces, and Central India. Another curious notice is in the poem Bassarika of Dionysius of Samos. It mentions about KASPEIROI, a tribe famous for their fast feet. Even Alberuni has mentioned about Kashmiris being good pedestrians. Herodotus, who is known as the “father of history”, mentions KASPATYROS as a country which is taken to refer to Kashmir.

After Greeks, Kashmir is mentioned in Chinese records. The earliest reference to Kashmir dates back to A.D. 541. This relates to the arrival of an Envoy in China during the early part of the reign of Tang dynasty. Kashmir is described as a country “enveloped on all sides like a precious jewel by the snowy mountains, with a valley in the south which leads up to it and serves as a gate of the Kingdom”. Many other Chinese accounts of Kashmir give a similar description. Ninety years after this first mention of Kashmir in Chinese records, Hiuen Tsang visited the valley and stayed here as an honoured guest for two years. According to him these natural bulwarks have protected the country from its neighbours who have never succeeded in subduing it. He describes the climate as cold and snow plentiful. The soil is described as very fertile with abundance of fruit and flowers. The people are described as light and frivolous, and of a weak and pusillanimous disposition. “The people are handsome in appearance, but they are given to cunning. They love learning and are well instructed”.

The next reference to Kashmir in Chinese records relates to the Annals of Tang dynasty which mentions the arrival of the first ambassador from Kashmir sent by Candrapida and then another sent by Muktapida (Lalitaditya) of the Karakot dynasty of the Rajtarangni. In fact, Muktapida had entered into a treaty of military alliance with the rulers of Tang dynasty of China against Tibet which he subsequently raided with a strong Kashmirian army. After few years of the visit of Muktapida’s envoy, Kashmir was visited by another Chinese pilgrim, OU-KONG. His account is very important in regard to the routes of ancient Kashmir. He gives very clear description of three great routes through the mountains which, since ancient times have formed the main lines of communication between the valley and the outer world. In the east the route leads to Tou-fan or Tibet. This is the road going over Zoji La to Ladakh and thence to Tibet. In the north the route leads to Po-liu or Baltistan which is the route to Gilgit through Upper Kishenganga valley (Gurais and Tilel) and from there to Skardo or Astor on the Indus. The route through the western gate leads to Kien-to-lo or Gandhara. This is the famous Jehlum Valley road which was always the most frequented and easy entry to the valley. Ou-kong also mentions a fourth route which remained always closed and was opened when an imperial army honoured it with a visit. This is the route over the Pir Pantsal range to the south. In fact this route came into prominence only after the Mughals annexed Kashmir in sixteenth century.

After Chinese we can examine the references in the accounts of Muslim scholars. Although the first rush of Arabs into Indus Valley brought them close to Kashmir yet they did not make any attempt to enter it. In spite of this seclusion of Kashmir, the Arabic literature has very accurate and valuable account of Kashmir. This is due to the research and critical appraisal of ALBERUNI who travelled with Mahmud of Ghazni upto the borders of Kashmir at the fort of Lohkot (presently Loran in Punch). This stronghold of the Kashmiri forces brought the invasion of Mahmud to a standstill and he had to ultimately retreat from here due to the onset of winter. Though this expedition failed to reach Kashmir but it gave Alberuni ample opportunity to collect detailed information on Kashmir. He refers to the pedestrian habits of Kashmiris and mentions that the nobles were carried in palanquins on the shoulders of men. He describes Kashmiris anxiety and care to protect their country. “They are particularly anxious about the natural strength of their country, and therefore take always much care to keep a strong hold upon the entrances and roads leading to it. In consequence it is very difficult to have any commerce with them. In former times they used to allow one or two foreigners to enter their country, particularly Jews, but at present they do not allow any Hindu whom they do not know personally to enter, much less other people”.

Compared to all these references in Greek, Chinese and Arabic literature, there is a lamentable lack of exact geographical mention of Kashmir in general Sanskrit literature. Judging from the extreme scantiness of the data, it is clear that Kashmir to them was a country foreign and remote in every way. The most specific piece of information regarding Kashmir that Sanskrit literature outside the Valley furnishes is in the term Kasmira or Kasmiraja that designates Saffron and Kustha for which it was famous since the ancient times.

In view of these historical facts, the plea of the present Hindutva leadership about Kashmir having been an integral part and the crown of Hindu India is totally negated. It has always remained as an independent sovereign country even though the population followed the Hindu Saivite religion till Mir Sayed Ali Hamadani (Shah-i-Hamadan) converted entire population except 2% Brahmin rulers to Islam through his preaching. Incidentally, the Kashmiri Hindu philosophy of Trikka Saivism is a total contrast to North Indian Vedanta philosophy!

The Mughals annexed Kashmir to their empire by treachery in 1586. The four centuries of external subjugation transformed Kashmiris into virtual wretches. For last 86 years or so they have been trying to regain their lost freedom. Due to their misfortune, they landed themselves in a mess resembling a Gordian knot during the partition of the sub-continent. They are still stuck in the mess but the new generation seems to be determined to untie the Gordian knot and reclaim Kashmir’s historical position. Only time will show whether they will succeed in their endeavour!

Thus the UN has not made any mistake but recapitulated a historical truth. In fact, it may be better for the three neighbouring countries to ultimately convert Kashmir into something like Switzerland which attribute has been given to it from the earliest times!. In spite of all the wars in Europe, Switzerland remained unmolested and served as a meeting point for all the rival countries. The revival of the Silk Route by the Chinese through CPEC and the fast developing situation in the South Asian region may ultimately make this proposition to be the best solution for Kashmir and all its neighbours!

Kashmir was a separate country for 24 hours.. then Pakistan decided to raid and capture... and king decided to join India in lieu of military support...
Proof it by any partition plans document that subcontinent was divided into 3 countries
Pakistan , India and Kashmir and I will agree with you
But if you can't then on logical grounds you have to agree with me

The division was based on majority population and Kashmir is a Muslim majority area
On reports of Indians army invading jammu , the Kashmiri people and gilgat people started the war , at that time Pakistan was not in the shape to do so , but later they joined it and got azad Kashmir

Kashmir is going to be with India. No need to speculate on things that has no chance of being true.

An "independent" nation of Kashmir sandwitched between 3 hostile nuclear powers will not be able to survive. Pakistan cant be trusted to not attack it and try to annexe it. They tried it in 1948, tried to take over Siachen glacier but Indian Army got there first, within months of peace talks between Indiana nd Pakistan in Lahore their general did the Kargil misadventure.

It is landlocked country so for external trade it will have to depend on either India or Pakistan. Being a mountainous region agriculture is very difficult, It has no mineral wealth, no big industries. What will its economy be based on. Only tourism will not be able to sustain it. Kashmir recieves massive investments from India and if it becomes independent all that will stop. How will the infrastructure development take place?

Every time you by pass vital part of history. There was already freedom movement in Maharja dominated areas since 1818, which turned later in favor of current AJK districts.

Kashmir is going to be with India. No need to speculate on things that has no chance of being true.
Kashmir full of blood?

As a Pakistani nation we are ready to give independent nation status because Kashmiri people have full right to choose what is good for them but India (a disgusting nation) is not agree to set them free .......

Sorry if with your track record we dont take your word for it. Hell you did the Kargil war mere months after the Lahore bus yatra peace initiative and the worst thing is your PM didnt even know what your general was doing.

You say India is a hostile country. Here was a PM who staked everything for a peace initiative. You back stabbed him as well as your own PM for your hunger for Kashmir

Kashmiri bhayyas need to accept the fact that they have nothing to gain but alot to loose down the path of 'freedumb',,,othr thn the so called ticket to jannat,,ofcourse.
So stop this chutiyapa n live in peace,,u got art.370 already

@Patriots What assurance can you give us, the Kashmiris and the World community that you will respect the independence of the region?

If the "independent nation" decides it does not want to be part of CPEC and instead want to hitch its trade wagon with India what will be your reaction? Will you let it follow its foreign policy or try to annexe it?

Also please tell which all regions will be part of this "independent nation"
1 Kashmir Valley?
2 So Called Azad Kashmir - which BTW is not Azad but under Pakistani control (so much for respecting independence wishes of the people)
3 Gilgit Balististan?
4 Jammu Region?
5 Ladakh Region?
6 Aksai Chin? (Will you negotiate with China for the independence of that part)

Hello,sirjee.
What is the ultimate solution?
LOC as border but i fear kashmiris will not agree on it . or a country free from india- pakistan - china .

I''m not so sure. As discussed in Shuja Nawaz' 2008 book, Crossed Swords: Pakistan, Its Army, and the Wars Within (page 468), until General Qazi stopped them the ISI through its "freelancers" was killing the Muslim Kashmiris who advocated independence rather than union with Pakistan. We don't know if that was a permanent suspension or not, do we?

.
@Imran Khan please answer my questions in post 5 and post 11

1 how will independent kashmir be economically sustainable?

2 what assurance can Pakistan give of respecting its independence?

3 which all regions will be part of this independent nation?
