The violence broke out hours after Mansoor Mukhtar, a local leader of Mutahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), was shot dead by unidentified gunmen at his home in a colony early Tuesday, Xinhua reported citing local Urdu TV channel Dunya.

MQM blamed its rival "Peoples Peace Committee" for the killing of its party worker, but the group denied involvement in the incident.

Thousands of MQM supporters took to the streets in different parts of the city in protest and set ablaze many vehicles while firing in the air.

At least one person was killed in the firing and two dozens vehicles were set on fire, said police.

The situation deteriorated as more deaths and arson of vehicles were reported in the following hours.

The violent protest virtually brought life in the city to a standstill.

The Karachi Transport Union halted transport services. Markets and main universities in the city were also closed, with the exams scheduled for Tuesday postponed.

An official of the Petroleum Dealers Association said all fuel stations would remain closed in the wake of an oil tanker being set on fire in Korangi, Geo News reported.

Firing was also reported in Hyderabad, the second major city after Karachi & nawabshaw! Sukhar & other major cites in sindh!

Killing of ‘gangster’ sparks violence in Lyari
KARACHI, April 1: The situation in parts of Lyari grew tense on Sunday morning soon after the death of a man during a police raid on a suspected hideout.

The raid was conducted near the Cheel Chowk locality within the remit of the Chawkiwara police station by a Crime Investigation Department (CID) team led by SP Chaudhry Aslam Khan.

The police claimed that the raiding party was fired upon by gangsters. “The fire was returned and in the ensuing encounter a man later identified as Saqib Khan sustained fatal bullet wounds while an ASI, Waheed, was wounded,” they added.

Saqib Khan was stated to be a close aide to (defunct) People’s Amn Committee leader Sardar Uzair Baloch.

The police also arrested a suspect and identified him as Kashif, claiming that an AK-47 assault rifle with several live rounds was seized from him during the raid.

The police shifted the body of Saqib Khan to the Civil Hospital while the wounded ASI was rushed to a private hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.

Contesting the police claim, PPP Sindh Council member Habib Jan described the CID team’s action as ‘a staged encounter’ and condemned the killing of Saqib Khan.

In a statement issued after the action, Mr Jan said that the police had also taken away two young men, whose lives were in danger. He appealed to the chief justice of Pakistan and all human rights organisations to take notice of the ‘fake encounter’.

While Chawkiwara and several other localities in the area remained tense since morning, the law and order situation in other parts of Lyari also aggravated in the evening when groups of protesters took to the streets and attacked the police with stones and police lobbed teargas shells to disperse them.

During the course of the pitched battle, a petrol bomb was thrown at a police armoured personnel carrier at Lea Market in the night. Police used live ammunition to counter the attack. However, there were no reports of casualties in the clashes.

Reports from the area said that a vehicle belonging to a private TV channel was damaged during the violence at Lea Market.

KARACHI: Demarcation of sensitive areas, increase in regular patrols, setting up of pickets on vulnerable roads, deployment of sharpshooters, formation of intelligence-sharing committees, amendment to the anti-terror law and immediate removal of party flags from public property were some of the important decisions taken at a meeting held at the Chief Minister’s House here on Sunday to consider measures to improve the law and order situation in the city.

The meeting was jointly presided over by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and Interior Minister Rahman Malik.

In the wake of the three-day violence triggered by the targeted killing of political activists last week, the meeting called upon all political leaders to purge militants from their parties. They were asked to remove party flags from public property with immediate effect.

It was decided that the relevant station house officers would be held responsible if party flags were not removed from government buildings, bridges, poles and other public property within their remit.

The meeting also decided that the parties would be required to take permission from the local administration to hoist party flags on special occasions or declared days.

It was also decided that no party would be allowed to hoist flag on anybody’s house without taking the consent of the occupant.

Addressing the participants of the meeting, including Sindh Home Minister Manzoor Wasan, the chief secretary, additional chief secretary for home, inspector-general of police, director-general of Pakistan Rangers, Sindh, and Karachi police chief, the chief minister said President Asif Ali Zardari had called for action by the law-enforcement agencies across the board without any discrimination.

He said the Rangers and police would patrol sensitive areas on a priority basis. They would be reinforced with additional manpower to ensure safety of markets, he added.

It was decided that pickets would be set up on the roads ‘most vulnerable’ to robberies and snatching.

The meeting also decided that the Banaras bridge, where four people were killed last week, would be guarded by police patrols and posts where sharpshooters would be deployed. Similarly, it was decided at the meeting that the ICI bridge would also be monitored round the clock with the deployment of police and Rangers.

The DG of Rangers and the city police chief would identify most sensitive roads and areas for extraordinary deployment of law-enforcers. The city would be divided into zones according to their level of sensitivity, it was decided.

The participants in the meeting highlighted the need to amend the anti-terrorism act (ATA) to make sure that the culprits behind violence were brought to justice.

Emphasis was laid on strengthening of police stations and giving confidence to the SHOs so that they took responsibility of their areas.

The interior minister said the SHOs be given the authority to raise volunteer and community support programme to assist and help police in maintaining law and order. He also called for better coordination between the police and Rangers.

It was decided that divisional intelligence committees comprising representatives of the Rangers, police and intelligence agencies would be constituted to coordinate security efforts and share sensitive information to maintain law and order. A notification in this regard would be issued by the Karachi commissioner.

It is worth noting here that Mr Malik had on Saturday night claimed that the authorities had got clues to the involvement of the Taliban in the killing of political activists and in fomenting sectarian and ethnic unrest in the city.

Official sources said President Zardari would hold a meeting on Monday to review the law and order situation in the city and overall political environment.Following his visit to the Kati Pahari area where he met ANP leadership and the meeting on law and order at the CM House, the interior minister said all political parties had been given a 24-hour ultimatum to voluntarily remove their flags as the police would come into action afterwards, adds PPI.

Lyari violence: 7 dead as rockets, hand grenades used during clashes

By Web Desk / Hafeez Tunio / Faraz Khan
Published: April 2, 2012

KARACHI:*The situation in Lyari remained tense for most of Monday as protestors and police clashed at regular intervals throughout the day.
At least seven people were reported to have been killed and over 20 injured, including five policemen, during the clashes. The killed included Ali, a member of the Peoples Amn Committee, and local Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Hassan Baloch. Baloch was reportedly standing outside his house when he was killed as a result of police firing.
The protests were against yesterday’s killing of an activist of the banned Amn Committee, Saqib Pathan, by officials of the Crime Investigation Department (CID). The protestors have been demanding that action be taken against officials who participated in the “fake” operation.
Peoples Amn Committee leader Zafar Baloch has claimed that over 20 people were injured during the clashes. He said that the injured were shifted to Lyari General Hospital and five of them had passed away.
Sporadic incidents of firing were reported from the Lea Market, Cheel Chowk, Tanga Stand and Baghdadi areas of Lyari. SSP CID Chaudhry Aslam was present in the area.
Three hand grenades were thrown and a rocket was also fired at policemen. The attacks resulted in security personnel opening fire and forcing the protestors to retreat.
Armed men have been firing at the police from on top of buildings and in the streets.
The Inspector General of Police (IG) is expected to arrive in the area soon.
The situation remains tense and residents have been asked not to come out of their homes.
Tension in Landhi and Kharadar
Firing incidents were also reported in the Landhi and Kharadar areas.
In separate incidents, unidentified men in the Lasbela Chowk and Nishter Road areas opened fire and forced shops in the area to shut down.
Tension spread across the areas, stretching from Teen Hatti to Ranchore Line.
Station House Officer Jamshed Quarter Humayun Khan said that the incidents were in continuation with the Lyari turmoil.
The assailants fled the scene after the police arrived, while a heavy contingent of security personnel has been deployed to thwart any potential terror bid.
Inquiry called
The Sindh government has ordered an inquiry into the murder of Saqib alias Sakhi Baloch.
Looking at the reaction of the people, the government has ordered deputy commissioner south to look into the matter and report to Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah regarding the murder of the activist and the unrest that broke out in the areas after the incident.
The protestors alleged that the deceased was kidnapped by Senior Superintendent of Police Crime Investigation Departmet (CID) Chaudhray Aslam. However, police said that Sakhi Baloch was a gangster of the area and was a close aide of Uzai Baloch, chief of Peoples Aman Committee and was also wanted by police in many criminal cases.
Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik told the reporters that the deceased was a criminal, but the government was investigating whether he was killed in encounter or it was an extra judicial murder case.
Zardari convenes meeting
President Asif Ali Zardari directed that indiscriminate legal proceedings should be carried out against criminals responsible for wreaking havoc in Karachi.
He said this while convening a meeting on the worsening law and order situation in Bilawal House, Karachi.
President Zardari directed that the law enforcement agencies should deal with the criminals strictly.
Chief minister Sindh, Sindh Home Minister Mazoor Wasan and officials of the home department, police, rangers and intelligence agencies also attended the meeting.
On the other hand, Sindh Governor Dr Ishtarul Ebad is also likely to meet President Zardari to brief him about Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) complaints and their solutions.
It may be mentioned here that a meeting between MQM leaders and Malik was held in the Governor House late Sunday night in which the interior assured them that their issues will be resolved.
