A Church-based social center is backing the claims of some 40 million ‘illegal immigrants’ from Bangladesh for Indian citizenship.

Jesuit-managed Udayani (awakening) Social Action Forum has supported the members of dalit (former untouchables) Matua community, spread in 13 states of the country.

Over 200,000 Matua members demonstrated in Kolkata, eastern India, Dec. 28, claiming citizenship for all the refugees in the country.

Father Irudaya Jothi, who directs the Jesuit forum, said their support to the causes of dalit, tribal, women, children and minority groups “is part of our Jesuit option for the poor.”

The Jesuit priest told ucanews.com that the Matua community in West Bengal state has realized their collective power and the need to get empowered through education.

The demand for citizenship is “fruit of their empowerment, and we are with them in their cry for justice,” he added.

He said that his center supports the community’s cultural revival and recognizes their identity.

He said the Communist Party of India (Marxist) that heads the ruling coalition in the state does not resent the presence of refugees from Bangladesh.

However, the pro Pro-Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP, Indian people’s party) considers them a potential threat, because of their association with Muslims, Father Jothi explained.

Nityananda Haldar, a member of the Central Committee of All India Matua Mahasangh (confederation), warned his community would storm the state assembly house and if need be even the parliament house in New Delhi, “if our claims” are not accepted.

The Matua community was formed by Guru Chand Thakur in 1880 in the undivided Bengal.

the "indianisation" of Bangladesh begins. I reckon India is dreaming for south-osseta type incursion in Bangladesh. Russia also started with granting Russian passports to Russian speaking minorities of Georgia.

.
I am just wondering whose agenda these groups are serving.... what is their intention... so far even extreme radical group used to say there are 20 million bangladeshi in india... this group increased the number to 40 million !!!! Is this some sort of conspiracy to create a anti bangladeshi sentiment.... and to create pressure on Bengali muslims of india and to attract vote from th extreme right wing hindus??? Why a christian org should support this.... do they think by supporting this they will be able to convert bengali muslims???? I think bangladeshi government should take strong position against such bs and propaganda.....and should ask indian government to provide proper protection and right to the bengali muslims....

Instead of asking, as you suggested, from India for proper protection and right for these illegal immigrants, BD should make proper arrangements and guarantee live hood so that these people return to BD.

First of all I never said they are bangladeshi... I said they are bengali muslims... who are indian... I asked bd government to make sure they have proper rights... and does not become a victim of radical hindu propaganda that they are bangladeshi... This is a deliberate attempt to keep the number of muslims in india officially low... n to keep their power also in check... by saying there are 40 million illegal bangladeshi lives in india is something like there are billion people in bangladesh.... get a real life and come in to reality.... Sooner or later this is going to be exposed that India's muslim population is more than 13% ... something around 20%...or more...

Now don’t say that there are no BD illegal immigrants in India. If they are Indian Muslims, please don’t poke your nose in the internal affairs of India, and if India does so in BD affairs, then don’t complain.

Who gave you the figure of 20%. The exact figure 13.2%.

If India try to discriminate against a certain group of people then not only bangladesh but also the whole world should deal with it...along with major institution like UN.... n Bangladesh has the right and moral obligation to deal with this issue as name of Bangladesh has been dragged in here.... What is total population of Bangladesh..... saying 40 million bangladeshi are now living in india illegally is nothing but a huge hoax and out right propaganda... In india majority of the bangladeshis those who are there are either criminals who fled there and mostly hindus... those who transfer all their savings to india... but no way it is something like 20 or 40 million ...get a real life and do not promote this sort of propaganda...

It is more than 13% speculated by many people as despite even in indian press it was published for deades that the muslims has a very high birth rate... then how come the number is constant for decades.... whuch stuck to 13% for decades ... no change..????

This is an official ploy to keep the power of muslims in check...

Articles

According to Indian Government the total percentage of Muslim in India is in between 11% to 12%. Since the independence of India in 1947 the percentage of Muslim in government census has remained same, i,e, 12% or less.

In an interview with a well circulated newspaper of India "The Hindu" (Friday, October 01, 1999) MR. Justice K. M. Yusuf, a retired Judge from Calcutta High Court and chairman of West Bengal Minority Commission, says that in his view the total percentage of Muslims in India is at least 20 %. You can find the whole interview at the end of this article.

Another reason we believe that total percentage of Muslim in India is 20% at least, because if we notice the increase of population rate in Pakistan we will observe that after 1947 the total Muslim population in that country increased by almost 5 fold (Library of Congress). So, obviously the Muslim population in India has also increased at that rate. And it is well established fact the rate of increase in Indian Muslim community is very highest.

Below is the article:
`It's easy to exploit Muslims in the name of religion'

Rasheeda Bhagat

MR. Justice K.M. Yusuf, a retired judge of the Calcutta High Court, who has been appointed Chairman of the West Bengal Minority Commission only last week, believes that the bulk of the Muslim vote in West Bengal _ which he puts between 20 to 25 per cent _ will go to the Left Front and the Congress in the present elections.

In an interview to Business Line he said that lack of ``good leadership'' among the Muslims had resulted in their getting exploited in the name of religion vis-a-vis the battle of the ballot. Excerpts:

How do you think the Muslims of West Bengal will vote this time?

In West Bengal, the Muslims are feeling safe as far as their lives and properties are concerned. The Government is trying to protect them from communal violence, a common feature previously.

How previous would that be?

I do not want to name any political parties. But after independence we had so many devastating communal riots. But during the 22 years of the present government, we had very little of it... any communal violence was nipped in the bud.

Do you think West Bengal is one of the better States of India when it comes to communal peace?

Not only I think so, but I have heard people of great responsibility .. like the GOC of the Eastern Command... saying that compared to many of the other States, this State is much better as far as law and order is concerned. As far as the national election scenario is concerned, the Muslim wants the communal forces to be kept at bay and the secular forces to unite.

What is the percentage of Muslim vote or population in West Bengal?

I think it is certainly between 20 to 25 per cent.

That high?

Yes. When the census is done, large chunks of Muslim population are left uncounted...in the last three census exercises.

Would you agree with the point of view that the real percentage of the Muslim population in India is about 25 per cent?

There is no denial. It may be more. Anyway, it cannot be less than 20 per cent. It could be 25 per cent. I do not say like some others that it is 30 per cent. It is quite a substantial chunk.

So which way do you think the West Bengal Muslims vote?

The Muslim vote will be divided between secular forces and a small minority of the Muslim vote may go to the communal forces.

You mean the BJP-Trinamul combine?

I do not name anybody. But unfortunately there are some parties which say they are secular but siding with communal parties. So some vote might go to them also. There will be division of vote between the Left Front, the Congress and the Trinamul, but the major chunk will go to the Left and the Congress.

When the Dalits can remain united, how come the Muslim vote gets divided? Or do you think this is a good thing, that they should vote after applying their minds?

There is no leadership among the Muslims. There is no one to guide them properly on what is good for them and what is not good. And it is very easy to exploit the Muslim in the name of religion. And Muslims, as you know, are emotional people and where emotion comes...

Don't you think they are actually getting exploited by their own leaders.. maulvis and others?

This is an unfortunate development that religious leaders are indulging in politics. This is not their field of operation. The concept of politics is not what it was during Prophet Mohammed or the Caliphs' time. Then religion and politics were one, not separate. But in modern times they have been separated. At those times, the Caliph used to be the head of the state and head of the religion.

But the vote bank that the Congress made of Indian Muslims... do you think that has done any good to the community?

The political parties of India harp much on the Muslim vote bank but now I think the Muslim vote bank will generally disintegrate...

Hasn't it already started?

Yes it has... and what a particular Imam of Delhi or some Mufti of another place says, I think, will not have too much of an impact on the voters. After all, education is spreading among the Muslims. No doubt they are an emotional lot but there are elements among the Muslims who have begun to think what is good for them and what is not. The enlightened Muslims will vote after judging the condition of India, which way the wind is blowing and whether secularism should be strengthened or not and if this is not strengthened, what will be the future of India.

Do you think a percentage of the Muslim votes will go to the BJP or its allies?

Of course the BJP and allies will get some votes, but the BJP on its own will get a negligible percentage of Muslim votes. That is my reading. I may be wrong.

It is still being conceived as a communal party..

Of course the BJP is the No. 1 hero responsible for the demolition of Babri Masjid, with the RSS and allies. But no less responsible for the demolition is the Congress(I) headed by Mr. P.V. Narasimha Rao who was the then Prime Minister. He came on Doordarshan and I myself heard him saying that yeh masjid usi jagah banayi jayengi jahan thi (this mosque will be reconstructed at the same spot). What happened thereafter? He was the Prime Minister and could have stopped the demolition had he applied force.

I am not praising anybody, but it is a fact that the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr. Jyoti Basu, talked personally and twice on that day to Mr. Rao that I have reports that it is going to be demolished. Please take action. But Mr. Rao kept saying.. Well, I am thinking.. I am looking into it. Thereafter, the Chief Minister was desperate and indignant. And, thereafter, the demolition started.

What are the main issues plaguing the Muslims of Bengal?

It is said that employment has not been given to the Muslims. But unemployment is a problem of the entire population of West Bengal and not a problem of only Muslims.

But do you find any discrimination?

Where recruitment is concerned, you can have the most secular leader at the top and there is no doubt that there is no person more secular than Mr. Basu today. But the moment you go down the strata, people are not the same. I was heading several offices, but I myself could not get co-operation from the lower staff. This is the difficulty. You know what happens at the employment exchanges... can the Chief Minister or his other ministers go and sit there?

But why have the Muslims remained educationally so backward?

That is a long history. If Sir Syed Ahmed Khan had not been born, it would have been much worse. For one full century, the Muslims neglected English education; poverty is another reason. Now there is a rush for English medium schools! But the problem here is that the Muslims get detached from the vernacular and the basic culture of the place, which is not good. They are neither westernised nor Indian.

What about women's rights and their representation in politics?

(Laughs loudly) First of all, tell me if we have 33 per cent of men who are fit to go to our legislatures and become MPs or MLAs.

If the unfit men are going there, let the unfit women too go there.

There will be chaos and double chaos.

So you are against reservation for women?

No, I am not against women's reservation in our legislatures. But I think that it should not be 33 per cent, but less than that.

What percentage would you recommend?

From what I have seen at our panchayat level.. the woman is there but the husband who is really guiding or dictating to her.

But she will learn..

She will undoubtedly learn but after causing a lot of damage to the country. Even Ms. Sonia Gandhi is learning but at what cost. (Laughs again). Now she has improved quite a lot. If you put a person with a law degree but no judicial experience as a judge, what will happen? He will create havoc.

Even among women's reservation do you think there should be a reservation for Muslims, the backward classes, etc. as Mr. Mulayam Yadav has been saying?

On this issue, I have no comments.

The RSS and the Sangh Parivar have been saying that Muslims have not integrated themselves into the mainstream of Indian life. Your comments.

If you say that if you are an Indian that means you are a Hindu and that you will have to accept Indian culture which means Hindu culture, I totally disagree. There is no Indian culture which is not the amalgamation of different cultures. So you can't say Hindu culture is Indian culture. India has Bengali culture, UP culture, Bihari culture, Assamese culture, etc. It is a big garden with a variety of flowers.

Do you think the BJP will raise the uniform civil code issue again, after some time?

It cannot now, because of the allies. But it is certainly there in their agenda and their leaders say it.

But are you against uniform civil code?

Yes, because it is not possible to implement it in India. The laws of Islam and the Hindu law are totally different. Take adoption for instance.. there was much hue and cry that the adoption Bill should be passed and made into law. At a seminar where I was a solitary Muslim speaker, I said I am ready to accept adoption. But you are a Brahmin; will you accept a Muslim as your son? There was total silence, as in a graveyard. Nobody got up to even make a false claim that yes, I will accept a Muslim as my son. So what adoption are you talking about?

Who is trying to discriminate whom…I am not getting the point here…as far as India is considered, it is a secular, multi diverse country and would remain so.

Please don’t equate criminals to Hindus. As far as I recall, 20% of BD populations are Hindu and 20% of a whole population cannot be criminals

The underling fact is there is illegal migrant problem, although I doubt the 40 million part.

.
First, I would believe the census, than some interpretation by a person regarding the Muslim population in India Second, even if the population is 20%, it should not concern BD because they are Indians

I did not mixed up hindu and criminals... they are separate segments... majority of the Bangladesh's big don and criminal are now in India....n hindus get a free hand while they flee to india... even some radical hindu group support them... My family is personally aware of this.... One of my aunt married to a hindu man even though during marriage he said he converted to islam... but after 6 years of marriage he killed my phupi along with her daughter and fled to india as he continuously used to ask money and my phupi refused.... So, this is not difficult for a hindu to go to india... even they get political shelter from different political parties...

This is a recent article from Indian press itself...confirming this fact...So the bottom line is that majority of the illegal migrants are hindus and criminals those who fled to india frequently... n indian elites and different political parties support them... If really there are illegal migrants with a number like 20 or 40 million provide proof with facts... n I personally think they will not be difficult to identifies as some people has claimed 37% of the slum dweller in delhi are illegal Bangladeshi ....

Votebank bait blurs enemy lines

KOLKATA: The Matuas - a subaltern religious sect, comprising mainly lower caste, poor Hindu refugees from East Pakistan/ Bangladesh - achieved the near impossible by getting top CPM and Trinamool Congress leaders on the same stage at Esplanade on Tuesday, along with those of the Congress, the BJP and the Forward Bloc.

It's proof that the Matuas are a force no party in Bengal can ignore. The community, a 5-lakh-strong vote base, first made its presence felt in the Bongaon assembly bypolls in 2006 when it rose against the CPM and handed the ruling party a crushing defeat.

This is why CPM leaders Gautam Deb and Kanti Biswas could not refuse the Matua Mahasangh invite for a mega rally in the city to place their chief demand - citizenship rights to Bangladeshi refugees who moved to India after 1971. There were no slogans or political banners. The Matuas announced their might with conch shells and drums and "horibol" on their lips.

While the mega rally choked the heart of the city, chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee entertained a Matua delegation at Writers' and assured he would take up their demands with the Centre.

On the dais, Pradesh Congress chief Manas Bhuniya promised to speak to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, PM Manmohan Singh and home minister P Chidambaram by the second week of January.

Former BJP state chief Tathagata Roy repeatedly pointed out his party had all along been sympathetic to Hindu refugees fleeing Bangladesh even after May 25, 1971. Trinamool MP Mukul Roy, the Union MoS for shipping, also showed along with party MP Gobinda Naskar and MLA Jyotipriya Mullick (both representatives of Matua-dominated areas).

Roy and Deb shared the dais for a few minutes before the Trinamool leader got a call on his mobile and climbed down. He spent the rest of the afternoon at a nearby tea stall.

Deb congratulated the Matua organizers for being able to rally all mainstream parties. "It makes me happy to see Congress, CPM, Trinamool and BJP leaders on stage. You have a valid point. Let all MPs from Bengal set aside their political differences and take up with Delhi the plight of the refugees.

When it comes to the interest of state, we should not stick to narrow politics. My department did not hesitate to hand over 72 acres of land in Haldia to Kolkata Port Trust although Trinamool's Mukul Roy is the minister of state for shipping," the Bengal housing minister said.
