Quran tells a different story.Mahdi will 'only' restore world order? He will bring justice in the world and restore religion, all in 7,8 or 9 years. He is not a minor character and if by 'messiah' one means fix or save the world from the insanity it currently is in, then yes Mahdi is our messiah. We don't call him messiah rather his title is 'Mahdi' because Allah guided him to the right path(before he becomes in power).
Prophet Jesus(AS) is not referred to as Messiah rather Spirit of Allah(SWT) in Islam. He will help the Mahdi near his last days and I have read once he passes away at that time Prophet Jesus(AS) will take over and rule for 40 years. After this 40 years a breeze will take the souls of believers and Allah will order angels to blow the horn and the Universe will contract within an hour, thus it's called the 'Last Hour'. Then we will be resurrected by a rain and appear on a plain to be judged.
Allah Almighty has warned people of an apocalyptic event in Surah Ad-Dhukhan in the last era, just before the "Last Hour."
There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers.
But they are in doubt, amusing themselves.
Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke.
Covering the people; this is a painful torment.
[They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers."
How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger.
Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman."
Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief].
The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution.

Emphasis mine. No such thing as a breeze taking the souls of believers only from across the world. Allah Almighty has hinted a smoke-like apocalyptic event in Quran in different versus.
Equally important are following revelations:
Indeed, the Day of Judgement is the appointed time for them all -
The Day when no relation will avail a relation at all, nor will they be helped -
Except those [believers] on whom Allah has mercy. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

Problem is that hadith have turned into "bible of Islam" over the course of time. We are supposed to study them and act upon them but nobody has a clear idea which statements are accurate and which are not. Even the so-called Sahih hadith have mistakes and errors. Additionally, it is not necessary that only Sahih hadith are correct.
The single most important source of guidance at our disposal is the Holy Quran itself. I don't think Holy Prophet (PBUH) would say anything that contradicts revelations of the Holy Quran but his goodness passed away and we are left with centuries-worth of narratives which we are trying to piece together today.

Another thing is that scores of Muslims have carried out horrible acts under the banner of Imam Mahdi in modern times.

This kind of mindset is scary to be honest. Talking about wiping a society from existence and not feeling any remorse over it, is bordering "psychotic."
What if some people are trying to ENGINEER Armageddon? And when it happens and the outcome is very different, then what?
I believe that corruption and mischief in this world will reach a point that Allah Almighty will respond with apocalyptic events and eventually the Day of Judgement.
We are learning about the Global Warming phenomenon today. I think that divine trials are about to commence.
My prayers: "Allah Almighty, please guide all Muslims to the right path. Ameen."

Personally, I believe in the possibility of return of Hazrat Isa (A.S). As a prophet and with the support of Allah Almighty, he might be able to restore peace in this world and address all misconceptions in regards to Abrahamic faiths. Perhaps he is the Mahdi?
Allah Almighty has pointed out in the Holy Quran that every soul will taste death: https://quran.com/3/185
Unfortunately, peace won't last and corruption and mischief will become a norm once again, and then the rest. Indeed the man "transgresses."
