But now they are desperate for dalit status. On forums I hear hindu jaats brag about not caring about what brahmins think about hindu jaats. But now they use same brahmins to claim dalit status?

The reason they do this is because those who have OBC status are given preference in Jobs and collage admission due to the reservation system. originally this was created by the Indian government for the upliftment of the Dalits. Now even though the Jats in Rajasthan are not economically backwards but they were the first Jats to demand and get OBC status since they realized the benefits it would bring to the community. This resulted in Rajasthani Jats getting good jobs and admission into collages. Seeing this, Jats from all over North India began demanding OBC status. People in India no longer care about what is high or low, all they want is Jobs and easy college admission for their sons.

Land holdings are getting smaller and as a result farming is no longer seen as the only viable option for a comfortable life that Jats are accustomed to. So Jats realize getting a job is necessary and to get a job getting admitted into collage is crucial. That's where OBC status helps.

Everyone wants reservation. Even Brahmins and rajputs in some parts of India want reservation and the benefits it brings
