Japan's July seafood exports to China down 23% on blanket radiation testing

KYODO NEWS
KYODO NEWS - 23 hours ago - 20:28 | All, Japan, World

The value of Japan's seafood exports to China fell 23.2 percent in July from a year earlier to 7.7 billion yen ($52 million), partly due to the neighboring country's blanket radiation testing on such products that started that month, government data showed Tuesday.

The exports of those products, particularly scallops, saw a decline for the first time since January 2021, as Beijing had tightened its inspections prior to the release of treated radioactive water from the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Despite concerns from neighboring countries such as China, Japan went ahead in late August in discharging the water from the Fukushima Daiichi plant. China subsequently suspended imports of all seafood products from Japan.

Such a ban is likely to see a further drop in China-bound seafood exports for August, ministry officials said.

Tuna was also among the products significantly affected by China's radiation testing that lengthened customs procedures.

The aggregate export value of Japanese agricultural, forestry, and fishery products to China for July also fell 20.8 percent to 22.5 billion yen, the data showed.

The total exports of such products to Hong Kong were down 2.9 percent, while those of seafood products alone fell 11.0 percent.

Due to the impact of China's tightened inspections, the total value of Japan's food, agriculture, forestry and fisheries exports decreased 0.03 percent to 117.8 billion yen, marking a decline for the first time in six months.

The decrease is likely to affect the ministry's target of raising annual exports to 2 trillion yen by 2025.

Everyone should stop the dumping process, if possible.

Scientists have pointed out that China’s own nuclear power plants release wastewater with higher levels of tritium than that found in Fukushima’s discharge, and that the levels are all within boundaries not considered to be harmful to human health.

You should consume the contaminated water from Japan everyday since you think the water is safe, talk to your country Russia about the dumping too.

Wumao logic. The water in your toilet bowl is also not contaminated, why don't you drink it?

China has rejected Japan's proposal that it join an international verification framework for assessing the results of radiation level monitoring in treated water being released into the sea from the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant, sources familiar with the bilateral relationship said Tuesday.

China is staunchly opposed to the ocean discharge and has banned all seafood imports from Japan since it began in late August, calling the water "nuclear-contaminated." Beijing has also ignored Tokyo's repeated proposals for a science-based dialogue involving experts on the matter, Japanese officials said.

Under the framework, participating countries will compare, analyze and evaluate the results of the monitoring carried out respectively by the Japanese government and the International Atomic Energy Agency on seawater off Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan.

In order to guarantee the objectivity of international evaluations, Japan does not participate in the framework.

The research institutions participating in the framework are selected by an entity related to the IAEA. It currently involves institutions from the United States, France, Switzerland and South Korea.

Since early this year, Tokyo has repeatedly asked Beijing through diplomatic channels to participate in the monitoring efforts, but has had its requests rejected by China under the argument that the framework "does not guarantee" independent analysis of the released water, the sources said.

Our policies are based on science. We don't go around spreading misinformation on foreign countries to distract our population from our domestic problems unlike a certain country.

SINGAPORE - Japanese seafood has not been banned in Singapore following the release of treated radioactive water on Thursday from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) maintained its position on the safety of food from Japan, saying its surveillance results, including for radiation, have been satisfactory.

It added that since 2013, SFA has not detected any radioactive contaminant in food imports from Japan and that food products that fail SFA’s inspections and tests will not be allowed for sale in Singapore.

I wish you to eat Japanese nuclear seafood every day.

I completely agree with you. So I hope you eat Japanese nuclear seafood every day. :enjoy:

Based on " Japanese government document"? one question, would you be ok if they dump the waste on your coast? yes or not? and would the majority Singaporean population also be Ok with it like you?

If Japan dumps its nuclear waste to Singapore, we'll be more than happy to keep our mouths shut and see you enjoy your "scientific fact"

I really don't care. The wastewater released is within international guidelines.

On the other hand, China which cares so much about the environment....

If China is really concerned, all the more they should join this international framework and cooperate with other countries. With so many scientists and researchers, if something is wrong surely China can provide and publish their own assessment?

By not joining the framework, it's pretty obvious China is more interested in using Fukushima to score political brownie points rather than adopt a science-based approach towards policy making.

I read an article that a group of tiger researchers, after years of study, reached a conclusion that only one out of then tigers eat humans. and then one day when they were conducting a tiger survey in India, suddenly a tiger was approaching them from out of nowhere, at that moment, no researchers in the team believed their own research conclusion.

I really don't care. The wastewater released is within international guidelines.

What China should do or not can be in a different discussion, but are you sure most Sinpaporeans don't care if Japan dumps their nuclear waste along the Singaporean coast? how can you be so sure?

Lmao do you see Singaporeans protesting our food agencies' decision not to ban seafood from Fukushima?

In fact many are laughing at China's antics in Singapore forums.

Lol again, I really don't care if the water is discharged near Singapore's coast or not. If you have read the threads I posted above, you would know that we really don't give much crap about it.
