China expressed outrage on Tuesday over remarks by the mayor of the Japanese city of Osaka who said Japan's system of military brothels during World War Two was "necessary", as the Japanese government sought to distance itself from the comments.

Asian victims of Japan's war-time aggression, including many people in China and South Korea, are sensitive to what they see as any attempt by Japanese politicians to excuse Japanese abuses before and during the war.

Osaka mayor Toru Hashimoto is an outspoken populist who has often stirred controversy.

"Anyone can understand that the system of comfort women was necessary to provide respite for high-strung, rough and tumble crowd of men risking their lives under a storm of bullets," Hashimoto told reporters on Monday.

"At the time, it was a necessary system to maintain military discipline."

Historians estimate that as many as 200,000 so-called comfort women were forced into sexual slavery in the Imperial Japanese Army's brothels before and during World War Two.

China, where bitter memories of Japan's wartime aggression run deep, denounced the remarks.

"The forced recruitment of comfort women was a serious crime of Japanese militarism at the time of World War Two. This is an affront to human dignity and a major human rights problem," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said.

"We express shock and strong indignation toward the Japanese politicians who have made public an open challenge to human conscience and historical justice," Hong told a news conference.

"How Japan faces up to the past will decide its future. Asian neighbors and international society are waiting to see what choice Japan will make."

South Korea also denounced the Japanese politician's comments and had demanded an apology, South Korean media reported.

"HEARTACHE"

Japan's government has recently sought to tone down remarks over wartime history by its own members - including Prime Minister Shinzo Abe - that have further frayed ties with China and South Korea, already tense due to territorial feuds.

Last month, tension mounted after three Japanese cabinet ministers visited Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine for war dead and then Abe cast doubt on whether his government agreed with a landmark 1995 apology by Japan for its wartime actions.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga declined direct comment on Hashimoto's remarks.

Hashimoto is a former lawyer and co-leader of the small Japan Restoration Party, with which Abe has eyed cooperation to push conservative policies such as revising the pacifist, post-war constitution.

But Suga said: "The government's stance is, as we have said before, that we feel great heartache when we think about the indescribable suffering of those who experienced this."

He added that Abe's cabinet held the same view on the matter as previous Japanese governments.

In a 1993 statement by then Chief Cabinet Secretary Yohei Kono, Japan admitted military involvement in forcing Asian and other women into sexual slavery at wartime brothels and apologized for that.

Some conservative Japanese politicians, however, argue there is no conclusive proof of direct military involvement.

I'm glad that they got nuked.

The difference here is I'm not the one who started the shiet-stirring. And I'm no politician of any kind, that represents China politically.

The mayor is an idiot.

Well nobody can defend the mayor and the comfort women system . On other hand japan
Claim that many of these women were volunteers (at least it's what japan claimed after the incident that korea rsised an statue in memory of these women in front of Japan embassy ) , if its true and the majority of these women really voluntered in exchange of the money then you can't call them completely blame less on the matter

It doesn't matter how many you did not murder, all it matters is that you murdered just one.

Let these right winger keep shooting themselves on the feet. The "world opinion" was on their side for too long and it's about time those gullible "media" see the true faces of the fascists. They deserve each other.

The Japanese people have been pushed to the Wall. The Right wing hot heads have been elected to office. What else do you expect. The credit for that though definitely goes to China. If this continues like this the Asian Century will hardly be Asian.

you don't really think anglosaxon media were biased towards nipponzi because they didn't know how extremist and ridiculous and ugly these nipponzi really were, do you? anglosaxons protected nipponzi on the propaganda front because nipponzi were useful to them, and they would continue to protect nipponzi in propaganda as long as nipponzi continue to serve that useful purpose against chinese interests and anglosaxon war against china and chineseness.

no amount of hashimotos could change that. and if china is to prevail over those hashimotos, china must prevail militarily and diplomatically over the rootless anglosaxon race first.

I'm not taking Japan;'s side or anything, but most of the people who are trying to take the moral high ground think about their mother sisters only..But in real war it has always been the same and will be the same(you will f**k and destroy your enemy's mother wife children and what not else). How are the British even come close to Japs who made millions and hundreds of millions of Indian/world population die due to hungry which if accumulated will not even come close to even 1% of what happened(death and destruction) due to Japans/Germany's actions combined. may be the japan and Germany were late to the party(colonization), but we also need to remember we(or most of the current non developed world) were slaved for hundreds of years to either one colony or other or some other commie). In those times of world it was probably a norm for a developed country to have as many as slaves and colonies. "They just started late and failed, when seeing no other way to move ahead of those colonizers who held and slaved the rest of the world for centuries"... yeah if anyone ******* believes in their national heroes(or nation's father) for getting the freedom can be sure that it was just his/her lucky time when these 2 powers actually changed the shape of modern world at the cost of their own ambitions and country's prospect an destruction. otherwise there would still be slaved aisa/africa even in 80s or 90s ormay be even today, with hardly half of the population, because the rest is in heaven due to famine.

Why do you people keep posting these things about Japan? Soon enough the same people will start shedding crocodile tears for the Japanese over the A-bombs back in WW II.

I am nowhere related with India, but I still feel strong sympathy for the Indian girl who died of raping, and how many raped five year old Indian girls are there recently? This is not tolerable to anyone, even if I can never relate these Indian girls with my mother or sisters. So your twisted logic does not hold at all.

^^

So it holds true for me too(yeah very sympathetic) about a women or child getting raped in US or even UK right now. But not when I was a slave colony for that country for a century where they fucked and enjoyed and killed directly or indirectly half of that respective country's populations.
