Japanese launches her biggest coast guard ship: PLH-32

Wait, I thought that Coast Guard are weaponless. But this ship has her main cannon. It make me confuse

What is the point of having no weapons on a ship thats designated as Coast Guard?

no, if that were the case, those 100,000 ton cargo ships are beasts. Maybe if it were designed for it maybe, but I do know one ship that can sort of do it, and it's very difficult.
Even if you do put weapon systems on their the ship is not built for stealth, because it's a coast guard ship, it's presence is part of the power. Falklands proved how those ships are.
Russia's putting everything on a ship is done due to budget, and out dated ideology. The type 52D is smooth, because the VLS does everything.
Putting launchers on it not only doesn't help, but it makes it less capable.
Also putting a coast guard ship into combat is bad idea. The AEGIS ships are the ships of today, and that ship cannot be converted to one.

But Cargo ship's design and Naval ships design are totally different right... maybe you're right.. but i still think its possible to house a VLS based weapon system ..... But inly time will tell..

Not talking about Japan, just these ships in general. Seems to me coast guard's duty is to press on forward without raising too much alarm, being coast guard ships, having it in that tonnage seems not very practical for the coast guard.

For sure, responding to border crisis is the responsibility of the Coast Guard, and is met with less political drama than say responding militarily. The latter attracts bad press.

but what do you think of the impact of a 6,000 ton ship responding to a call. I mean even if it is coast guard, it still makes you look bad, due to it being 6,000 tons, most of ASEAN, not sure all, even have this big of a ship in their navy?

Due to it's size, the Shikishima Class ships of the Japan Coast Guard are perfect for long range operations and anti piracy activities. The ships in this class are regularly sent to Malaccas Strait for anti piracy drills, sent to the the Somali coast to escort Japanese merchant ships , Senkakus, Arctic, and Western Pacific.

There are 2 ships in this class and Japan Coast Guard is planning to build 2-3 more as per budget requests.

Why would you think it's "bad" for us to operate a 6500 ton coast guard ship? It's heavy because it's built for long range duties and built to endure the waves in the high seas.

I didn't say bad, I said weird, for the long range missions like you said, malacca strait, those are the domains of the navy. Despite being 6500 tons, it's ability is still severely limited relative to a naval vessel.

The name itself is the coast guard, coast is key, why sent a big boy to do a man's job.

It may serve in SCS mission, as US Coastguard in the past.
