Japan to remove swastikas from maps as tourists 'think they are Nazi symbols'
The ancient Sanskrit symbol which marks temples on Japanese maps continues to spread confusion among Western visitors

Swastikas could be erased from Japanese maps after a survey revealed that most tourists associate it with Nazi Germany instead of Buddhist temples.

The ancient Sanskrit symbol was used to denote religious buildings long before it was appropriated by the Nazi regime, but it continues to spread confusion among Western visitors to Japan.

It has prompted the country's tourism authorities to announce plans to update their maps, replacing the swastika with a more conventional image of a three-tiered pagoda.

But the proposals have prompted outrage in some quarters, with one Japanese academic calling for tourists to be better informed about the history of the countries they visit.

"We have been using this symbol for thousands of years before it was incorporated into the Nazi flag, so I believe it would be better for us to keep it on our maps and ask others to understand its true meaning", Makoto Watanabe, a communications expert at Hokkaido Bunkyo University, told The Telegraph.

"I think it would serve a good purpose if people from abroad see the symbol, ask what it means and where it originated.

"That might help to get rid of some of the negative impressions associated with the 'manji'," he added, referring to the Japanese term for the symbol.

The survey also found that the letter H, indicating a hotel, is causing problems because it is used elsewhere to mark hospitals on maps.

Adolf Hitler designed the flag that was to become synonymous with his regime - a red flag with a white circle and black swastika - in 1920 as a symbol of "the victory of Aryan man", he wrote in Mein Kampf.

And while the symbol has come to be shorthand for many people in the West with the Nazi regime, in other parts of the world it has long been used as a sacred and auspicious sign.

To this day, it continues to be used by extremists to denote their political leanings.

In Japan, where the character is known as "manji", it can be used to represent the figure 10,000 and has been used since the Middle Ages by a number of clans as their family crest.

. . . .
Some megalomaniac from the west uses a Hindu/Buddhist religious symbol for his adventures and now these cultures are expected to shun their own traditions/culture to please the same people from the west.

What a tragedy... I wonder if Hitler had used a cross instead what would the people in west do?

It is the west's projection.

Ridiculous.

This kind of crap happens all the time here. There is always some person or group that's offended by something. They think there wasn't history before them so whatever they're offended by, must be meant for them. For example, a few days ago the Sacramento Kings (NBA team) were giving out Chinese New Year shirts to all the people that attended the game. DeMarcus Cousins (big NBA star) complained the shirts were racist because it's Black History Month here and there is a monkey on the shirt. WTF? The monkey obviously has nothing to do with black people and has everything to do with it being the year of the monkey. Of course, the team decides to pull the shirts to avoid offending DeMarcus Cousins.

Japan should tell these western tourists to go kick rocks and play in traffic. The world doesn't revolve around them.

.
Another sad development.

Japanese have lost the sense of nationalism just like the Germans. Americans have indoctrinated both well.

He did, but the cross was associated more with Germany, than the Nazi party.
Hitler also persecuted priests, so he is not a representative of Christendom, is he?
It is not like Japan shunned the Nazi regime during WW II, was it,
so the use of the swastika in Japan is crossing the border of decent behaviour,
while India might get away with the same thing.

Another Idiotic statement. Any idea how older is the Swastika symbol then even Christ? Its already sacred symbol of Buddhist/Hinduism and Japan must avoid it just because one psycho from West uses it and it was in ally with Germany?

The world war 2 is just a 70 year history. Better learn to respect or do not visit. Easy as that.

Intolerant Bunches.

.
Swastika is a Hindu Buddhist religious symbolism. So nothing wrong with its use in context to religious practice. Folks can't accept that , then learn to accept the world is not Jewish centric nor for the PC brigade.

Brilliant.

Liberal Europeans should focus more on combating terrorism than on ancient Dharmmic symbolism. The nerve of these alien visitors.
