Japan has decided to release treated water from the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea, reports said on Friday (Apr 9), despite strong opposition from local fishermen.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga's Cabinet plans to announce the decision as early as Tuesday next week, according to Jiji Press and public broadcaster NHK.

The move would end years of debate over how to dispose of the liquid that includes water used to cool the power station after it was hit by a massive tsunami and went into meltdown in 2011.

The release is expected to take years. The water has been filtered and will be diluted to meet international standards before any release, NHK said.

The reports came after Suga met the head of Japan's fisheries federation on Wednesday and said the government would decide on how to dispose of the water "in the near future".

"Disposing of contaminated water is an inevitable task for Fukushima's reconstruction," Suga told reporters following the meeting.

But environmental activists have expressed strong opposition to the proposals, and fishermen and farmers fear consumers will shun seafood and produce from the region, which already face reputational problems despite extensive safety testing.

A government panel said last year that releasing the water into the sea or evaporating it were both "realistic options".

Most of the radioactive isotopes have been removed from the water through an extensive filtration process - but one remains, called tritium, which cannot be removed with existing technology.

Tritium is only harmful to humans in very large doses, experts say, and treated wastewater is regularly discharged into the ocean from nuclear plants elsewhere in the world.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has endorsed the proposal to release the treated Fukushima water.

So far around 1.25 million tonnes is being stored in tanks at the facility, according to plant operator TEPCO, which declined to comment on the reports.

A decision is becoming urgent because space to store the water is running out.

Relax it's just water, it's not like they exported deadly virus worldwide like their fellow East Asian neighbor.
It's one thing to have a deep hatred towards someone(it's not a good thing but at least it's understandable)...it's quite another level when u get so bonkers in ur hatred that it turns u into a complete moron.

A pathogen has no nationality...it is stupid to malign a nation/country unless that nation/country specifically engineered and released a bioweapon on the world. Otherwise such pandemics happen from time to time. Should we malign US for the outbreak of spanish flu?
...and if we r gonna continue using that moronic reasoning...then by that same reasoning...China must get credit for helping to find treatment for a ton of diseases(including COVID19) bcuz Chinese hamsters are used in research to study various diseases and develop treatments for them.

U dedicate so much time opening anti China threads here...makes me wonder how u find so much free time during the day to further ur hate driven agenda? Most ppl have jobs, families...a life. I hope u r paid handsomely for this task u r so diligently doing...bcuz if u r not paid for this...I feel sorry for u.

I have my own opinion, I've never complained against people who deny that Covid come from certain country. I believe that China is actually responsible for the outbreak, it's in Wuhan that this pandemic started, it's common sense to point finger.

add that to the fact that China tried to bully everyone that wants to investigate further into the Pandemic origin like Australia, then I'm very much assured, I'm not alone in this, the supermajority of people in the world (even among Pakistani themselves) actually direct or indirectly point the blame to China.

But you always polluted this forum with low level propaganda/hateful delusion/distortions/lie etc instead of constructive opinions or intellectual discussions.

Have tendency in opinion is fine, but please make it a little bit weighty/smart instead of mere rubbish propaganda.
