What's new

Japan to have first aircraft carriers since World War II

Forget about my concerns, US will not allow that to happen , first Japan and Germany try to close the US Bases operating there just to keep check .

Actually, US Military had already allowed such things to happen in Japan.

Notice that Japan is buying 42 F-35B, when they plan to put 10 on each DDH (JS Izumo and JS Kaga), which mean they will have 22 left, and since there are no other DDH that can convert to take F-35B, which mean they are building a new ship for it, either they are building another 2 DDH similar to Izumo class, or they are building a single ship to host the remaining 22, which would be a ship similar to US Wasp Class

I think Japanese are building up their forces by concentrating on Chinese , specially after both country navies have small incidents every now and than . I am not against any country building up their forces to protect their homeland, its their right .

Couldn't stop myself from sharing this :rofl::rofl:

Maybe because of cultural barrier, can you explain this joke to me? :D

So there is a Secret Military Spending Raise in Japan? Because with the current Japan formal military spending, it hard to believe they can expand their military like that. Specially when F-35B is not your everyday aircraft that you can buy. It is expensive.

Well, I don't think China will attack Japan anytime soon, not when US still station in Japan.

But yes, Japan need to rearm their force, they are just a shell off their former glory.

Germans, Italians & Japanese were the axis powers (group against the allies) during World War 2.
If they start getting too close again, it should scare the hell out of the whole world.

Well, or they just buy stuff with normal price?

Don't forget, Japan military spending is inflated. Their destroyer cost more than a Cruiser and their , they would have a way to find money for those project if they wanted to, plus, they are exporting Military equipment now, so those spending could be offset.

its not about a major conflict, i think world is way past that when mankind tested nukes they put a stop to major military conflicts and no one has balls to use a Nuclear Weapon on a country which also holds Nukes ..

its more about been prepared , scare your enemy , put pressure on them , and show off .

Although Chinese posters tend to show off and talk tough, but Chinese military is designed for defense, not offensive, yet. Just look at their H-6 series, their J-20, their ships, etc. They focus more on defense than to power projection. So I doubt that China has any plan to attack Japan.

Even if they're developing power projection weapons, it is far from ready for a big military campaign right now.

Well, they can. Japan is rich. But the question is, without raising their military spending budget, can they expand their military capability with those expensive toys?

F-35B is surely more expensive in procurement cost and maintain than F-4, F-2, F-15J, etc. Aren't they? Isumo also not a cheap ship.

Well, depends on how you see "what's offensive capability" is

Every weapon, can be use as defensive weapon, but sometime it's no point at all to use a weapon system for defence, such as aircraft carrier, you would be better off using land air base for defence rather than an aircraft carrier, but still, you can use an aircraft carrier as defensive role.

Chinese ambition is on the rise, and that's no denying that, and as the expansion goes, there's always going to be in conflict with someone else, while as I said, I don't see that point in time happening anytime soon, but that is going to be an eventuality.

We need to see how the situation turn out. Japan currently capped their military spending on 1% GDP, which is actually 0.98% for the last 5 years, and that number in absolute is not at all small, that's because Japan have a large GDP, and also, don't forget, that is inflated. Which mean within that 1% limit, we can see there are a lot of leeway for Japan to wiggle alone, then you put exporting weapon and future threat, Military budget will increase, and even at 2%, it is an acceptable standard for the Japanese. And even if they don't, budgeting would mean they can still get some bang for their buck with things unchanged.

F-35B is cheaper per unit than F-2 and F-15J

F-35B is around 115 millions per as of today and is going down.

F-2 before research cost is 122 millions per

F-15J before license is around 40-45 millions per (in 1981 money) which is about 115 millions today (@1.6 times using this website https://www.dollartimes.com/inflation/inflation.php?amount=1&year=1981)

No Idea how much Japan pay for the F-4

Italy was a shitty power at that time and is a shitty power now as well !!

Germans were defeated in WW1 badly, they were broke and humiliated , in short snakes without teeth but see how they come out in WW2 ? never underestimate Germans , Japanese , Russians ..
Germans and Japanese are one of the smartest people on earth. Rather than policing around the globe and spending trillions on defence budget they happily put the burden of the defence of their own country on NATO/USA and concentated on sharpening their economic and technological teeth. They are still an economic and technological powerhouse to be reckoned with. Now they also know that they can make cutting edge military hardware in a very short time period, if needed.

. .
Japan can no longer pose a direct military threat to China. We are too close. Even Japan would sneakly make a-bombs PLA would eliminate them in very short time.
