Japan to buy vertical takeoff F-35B Lightning II aircraft

Sad that a country like Japan can't even build its own latest figher Jet like China is, rather they chose to funnel that money to US arm contractors.

Worth considering that the F-35 is actually an international aircraft. About 10% is UK. Other bits from elsewhere. Besides Japan makes some of its own aircraft such as P-1 and C-2. Also, F-3 stealth fighter is in development.

On the flipside, much of China's air power was based on Russian tech, including straight copying that resulted in the J-15 and J-16. Lets not exagerate China's genuinely and indepentantly developed aircraft tech.

Well, as I mentioned earlier, we are not supposed to consider China to be static. Although she doesn't announce their procurement plan for the carrier and new naval fighter, we shouldn't assume China will keep using only CV001 (Liaoning) or CV002 with J-15 as her main naval fighter in the not so distant future.

I estimate the F-35B will be ready for operational on Izumo around 2025. By that time we can expect China to operate EMALS carrier with navalized J-20/J-31 on it's deck; or even perhaps the VTOL stealth version: the rumored J-18, who knows.

Naval battles are not the same as land battles. Sailors do not fight each other like soldiers do. On the waters, who wins depends equally on technology as well as how good are the sailors know of their ships. You are deterred if you perceive the other side to be as good as you are.
ppl dont waste time for Naval battles bween ships vs ships now, anti ship missile solve the problem.

Same as for Japan.

I am not an expert on carriers but Izumo is built as a helicopter carrier so its infrastructure is optimized for helicopters and for assault troops.

It would be better to build a completely new Izumo optimized for F35s. And that will also take a while.

However China third carrier will be a game changer. Once the third carrier is launched and the J-15 optimized for the third carrier, J-15 will have longer range and will be able to carry a heavier load than any carrier based fighter in the world.
J-15 is an anemic fighter for a carrier. Even the chinese considered them as stop gap fighter.

PLAN naval brass wanted a carrier version J-31 & that's still a long way off.

The newspaper said that the government has decided to procure the F-35B Lightning II stealth fighter aircraft which could be operated from a modified Izumo class ship and Island bases.

Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun previously reported that the government may buy up to 40 F-35B vertical takeoff stealth fighters from the US that could operate from helicopter carriers, island bases and commercial airports. The F-35B can also take off and land conventionally from longer runways at major bases.

“The government is considering operating F-35B fighter jets from about fiscal 2026, in an effort to utilize airports on remote islands and thereby improve the nation’s capability to defend the isles,” the newspaper said in a February 12 story.

The F-35 is the most lethal and survivable fighter aircraft in the world, giving pilots an advantage against any adversary and enabling them to execute their mission and come home safe. The transformational F-35 is more than a fighter jet, it’s a powerful force multiplier with an advanced sensor and communications suite that significantly enhances the situational awareness and capabilities of networked airborne, surface and ground-based platforms.

The US military already operates F-35B squadrons in Japan. And the Japanese government is already buying 42

F-35A conventional takeoff and landing variant as the next generation fighter of choice for the JASDF in December 2011, following the F-X competitive bid process. And now, will buy and F-35B model short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) variant is designed to operate from austere, short-field bases and a range of air-capable ships operating near front-line combat zones.

The Italian Air Force will also operate the F-35B fighter jets.

Japan to revise National Defense Program Guidelines to convert JS Izumo into aircraft carrier

Japan is taking another step towards converting JS Izumo into an aircraft carrier. Media outlets are reporting that Tokyo intends to revise the National Defense Program Guidelines next month to allow the helicopter destroyer to be converted to operated fixed-wing aircraft.

Since PLAN has decided to go on with J-31 for their naval, i think it wont take that long considering Shenyang already has experience in navalized fighter and the small size of J-31.

Do you think Deng would think so?
Deng Xiao Ping ? But anti ship missile seem only effective wt rangr below 500km. CN is too far from SCS( east VN sea) so, they'd better not to engage Naval war against JP-US.
