Japan seeks foreign engines for stealth fighter prototypes

By Leithen Francis

Japan is looking to use foreign engines for the prototype aircraft needed for its fifth-generation fighter programme.

The ATD-X Shinshin programme is still in the study stage, but industry sources in Japan and overseas say Tokyo has issued a document to engine-makers seeking information and pricing on powerplants needed for two prototype aircraft.

Responses are due to be submitted by 10 May.

Japan is interested in engines in the 10,000-20,000lb thrust class (44-89kN), and has a long-list of candidates on which it is seeking information, the sources say.

These include the General Electric F404 used to power the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet, Snecma's M88-2 for the Dassault Rafale and Volvo Aero's RM12, integrated with the Saab Gripen.

Its search even contains the Gas Turbine Research Establishment GTX-35VS Kaveri, still in development for India's Aeronautical Development Agency Tejas light combat aircraft.:woot:

Japan had wanted to buy Lockheed Martin's F-22 to meet its future fighter requirement, but the US government has barred exports of the type and agreed to halt production for the US Air Force. Tokyo has responded by vowing to develop its own fifth-generation fighter under the ATD-X programme.

Local engine-maker Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries (IHI) has been assigned to develop the XF5-1 engine for the ATD-X. The move to source foreign engines for the prototypes could be part of efforts to give IHI more time and ensure that the overall programme remains on track.

Japan is also expected this year to issue a request for proposals for new fighters under its F-X programme. Aircraft in the running will include the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, Eurofighter Typhoon, and Lockheed's F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

for all those who degraded kavari project what do you guys say now ? time for some more beer and party

No EJ200 but Kaveri included

the reason is since it isz in developmental phase i think the japanese might have thought if possiable it will be cheap and cost effective to invest in a project which is already in developmental phase rather than building an engine from scratch

JAPAN SEEKS FOREIGN MOTORS Prototype ITS fifth-generation fighter

Japan intends to use foreign engines for the prototype of its fifth-generation fighter. According to the information portal Flightglobal.com, a program called ATD-X Shinshin is still under investigation, but sources in Japan and overseas have reported that officials of the country sent a request to the leading engine-building companies to provide information and prices of their motors, the necessary for installation on two experienced fighters.

Presumably, the responses from the companies should be given until 10 May.

Japan is interested in engines with a thrust 44-89 kN and already has a long list of candidates. Among them Motors General Electric F404, which were installed on aircraft Boeing F/A-18 Hornet, engines Snecma M88-2, and Volvo Aero RM12. In addition, this list is the engine GTX-35VS Kaveri, is being developed by the Office of GTRE (Gas Turbine Research Establishment) for the Indian light fighter Tejas.

Japan would like to buy fighter Lockheed Martin F-22, but the U.S. government banned the export of these aircraft and has decided to suspend their production for the U.S. Air Force. In response, Japan aimed at establishing their own fifth-generation fighter program ATD-X.

Local Motor Company Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries (IHI) was given the task to develop engines XF5-1 for the project ATD-X. Application for the acquisition of foreign engines for advanced fighter aircraft could be part of the strategy the Japanese government, which would allow the company IHI to concentrate fully on developing their engines.

If Japan chooses Kaveri it would enter a new dimension to Indo-Japanese ties.
They could also help us in maturing the technology in whatever way they can since they have some of the best tech in the world. In return they get a good engine from a reliable source at low cost while India shall develop the Kaveri on time with even more pressure on the respective companies.

.
LOL if they rely on Kaveri, their 5th Gen would be out when others would be using 7th Gen planes!! LOL

That will definitely take a lot of pressure off the developers of Japans 5th Gen fighter while they get more time to think :P

This is HUGE. If Indian Babus have iota of brain, they should scrap AMCA and join Japan with 50:50 partnership to develop second fifth gen aircraft. This news should send ripples across MoD ! GRAB IT NOW

Can anyone provide background info on Japanese fifth gen aircraft ?

Before this grabbing limited time offer, there are billions of dollars on stake ofcourse of Indians!! Japan has a history of not making successful fighters! can't just jump on anything that has written 5th generation on it :yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:

hahahaha this is the one of the best things i have heard today...

.
I still cant believe it..nevrthless no doubt Kaveri engine is proving to be a hit evn in the devlopment phase.
BTW any idea why they chose Kaveri engines ?? I mean there are many proven engines as options for a fifth gen fighter.

Sirji, Japan and India are more or less in the same boat. Japanese have incredible electronics coupled with our painful 20 years experience of making 4 gen aircraft will bear results.

Japanese are one of the most laborious, punctual and intelligent people around the globe. Word Impossible is not in their dictionary. And i find this idea intriguing instead of going all alone and developing a tech solely on our money, we can share development cost.

Don't forget imperial Japan and their arforce just 60 years ago. They don't have any experience now but when they step in fighter aircraft field, they will be one of the best.
