What's new

Jan 1 2014: Hong Kong Rises - Thousands march against Chinese government.

Chris Patten, the formal UK ruled HongKong governor, was appointed directly by The Queen. Why you didn't ask for drect election that time if you really have some balls? Because those colonizer is gonna deal with with iron fist if you ask so, am i right? Do you think CCP will hestitate adapting iron fist when you touch the botton line?

Why are you guys so worked up and arguing with Indians on hongkong issue? So funny! A city with such huge population gonna have people unsatisfied with anything. Who cares.
I'm not hating those HongKongese ask for direct election, i hate those claims they are not Chinese.

Everyone does know they are Chinese (Han) whether some people like it or not.
You'll find idiots like this in every orchard. Nothing new. ;)

It's only natural for people to want to choose their own leader and government. Who would want to live under a dictator?

The people should decide what their government does, not the other way around.

Your post is utter nonsense. Asking for democracy has nothing to do with the UK. Hong Kong has the right to ask for a better future for itself, including a better form of governance. The UK would have allowed a more independent Hong Kong if not for the history with China. If you want an example of how small former British colonies prospered as a city state, just look at Singapore. No one is glorifying Brits here, but the legacy of their governance is why Hong Kong has fared better than the mainland until 1997. If you talk about tax, know that Hong Kong didn't really pay a dime to the UK either except some symbolic gestures.

Sure, the CCP is all powerful right now, and it does represent the legitimate Chinese government. Nobody in Hong Kong is denying that so the whole anti-Beijing fear is pure paranoia. Hong Kong simply needs a government that listens and governs well, and the Beijing pointed government is performing miserably. Hong Kong has a unique history and was fortunate enough to prosper post WWII while every single communist countries suffered immensely. That includes your own family unless they were the ruling elites. However, don't act as if you have a personal right to Hong Kong or a personal say in anything the CCP does.
Hong Kong prospered not because of its "governance", but because of its fortune. Historically, Hong Kong had been an insignificant town until 1950's. It gained prominence starting with the Four Asian Tigers from small manufacturing. When China was isolated from the world, Hong Kong served as a window into mainland with enormous trade volumes, further driving its business. When China began economic reforms in the 1980's, Hong Kong businessmen were the first to take advantage, thus ensuring another decade of prosperity until 1997. Hong Kong NEVER had democracy under the British. It had no say in who got to be its governor, so don't claim otherwise. The British "would have allowed a more independent Hong Kong" is a pipe dream that never happened.

Now that China is an economic powerhouse due to its reforms, it no longer needs Hong Kong as a window. Hong Kong's manufacturing had greatly shrunk since 1980's, to a point of being nearly non-existent today. Shenzhen, Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou are all world class cities now, with cheaper educated labour force. Hong Kong wished to position itself as China's financial centre, but it won't get that status. No country on earth will allow its financial centre to be out of its control. The enactment of Article 23 of the Basic Law was Hong Kong's last chance to show mainland that it can protect the country's interest. It screwed that up. Now you have foreign influence, spies and these extremist groups that advocate driving away mainlanders running wild. Do you really think anybody in mainland would invest in you?

You are what you are because of mainland's blessing, not because you are better than us. The sooner you come to terms with that, the sooner you get out of your death spiral. The problem is not with you wanting election. The problem, is that your city is unwilling to take up the responsibility of ensuring national security and interest. Purge the foreign influence and the extremist groups, then we'll talk.

According to last 《The Sino-British Joint Declaration》, 1997-2047 there'r 50years HongKong's political system remains unchanged. After the governor of Britain Queen to HongKong, H.Kers can choose their own leader and government until 2047.

If H.Ker has any trouble, they can ask former British colonists why they never choose their leader before 1997 ? This political rule will continue to 2047 !

Read !
Sino-British Joint Declaration
The Declaration entered into force with the exchange of instruments of ratification on 27 May 1985, and was registered by the PRC and UK governments at the United Nations on 12 June 1985. In the Joint Declaration, the PRC Government stated that it had decided to resume the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong

In accordance with the "One country, two systems" principle agreed between the UK and the PRC, the socialist system of PRC would not be practised in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), and Hong Kong's previous capitalist system and its way of life would remain unchanged for a period of 50 years until 2047. The Joint Declaration provides that these basic policies should be stipulated in the Hong Kong Basic Law and that the socialist system and socialist policies shall not be practised in HKSAR.
Content of the Joint Declaration
1. The Government of the HKSAR will be composed of local inhabitants but the chief executive will be appointed by the Central People’s Government and he will nominate the principal officials. Furthermore the legislature of the HKSAR shall be constituted by elections.

2. The government of the HKSAR is responsible for the maintenance of public order. Military forces sent by the Central People’s Government, stationed in HKSAR, for the purpose of defence shall not interfere in the internal affairs in the HKSAR.

3. Those basic policies will be stipulated in a Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in the PRC by the National People’s Congress and will remain unchanged for 50 years.

and you'd be lucky to find a country that works 'the other way around' in the real world

I can't agree with you.
你的說話我不認同

中央沒有問題, 對人民很好, 對香港也很好, 我說的只是這裡的國人.
Then it is important that HK people should not let those few thousand people hijack the agenda.

HK is part of China, it is not hard to see that addressing China central government concerns is important for HK long term prosperity.

Is it that hard for HK people to choose someone from HK that can address both China national interest and HK interest?

Is those concern from Chinese central government is in conflict with the interest of HK? Or are they in common?

Can I buy two kilograms of freedom? Does it feed the hungry? Cure disease for the sick? Build housing for the poor? Transport people between places? Educate the illiterate? Research technologies?

Freedom is one of the basic & latent needs of all living beings including human, democracy gives you the right to choose what is good for you. And the idea of freedom & democracy is not against the other basic needs of human beings, many democratic countries have done better than China in all the parameters you have mentioned.

Yes, a right wing government to reclaim South Tibet taken away by Indians. I can't wait...

Only problem with this aspiration is that the capability doesn't exist.

When HK was a British colony,
the British appointed any white yahoo to be the HK governor, nobody said a word.
when the British took load up its plane with gold bars from the HK safe to London every year, the HKer never said a word.

And now they wanted democracy. How funny? What a world?

These people have been "rising" since the early 2000s and yet the situation remains. The ironic thing is that they are protesting for "democracy" and yet the fact that they are protesting at all is already testament to the presence of what they want.

You forgot to take into account that these democratic countries had been long established industrial powers. Figure out the cause and effect first. There is no freedom in poverty. The choice presented in democracy are brought to you by those with wealth and influence, not of your own choosing. Power is concentrated in the hands of corporate and political families, who then use the media to tell the population who to vote for. Every couple of years they put on a election show to make you think they care. There is no greater degree of enslavement than a slave who thinks he is the master of his fate.

The people will thank a government way more for providing them better living standards than an abstract concept.
