JS empowers ICTs to try organisations
State, complainants now can appeal against war crimes verdicts
Star Online Report

In a major breakthrough, the parliament on Sunday brought an amendment to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) law empowering the war crimes tribunals to try and punish any organisations, including Jamaat-e-Islami, for committing crimes during country’s liberation war of 1971.

The significant amendment was brought during the passage of the much-talked-about bill which also brought some other changes to International Crimes (Tribunals) Act, 1973 to allow the government and informants and complaints to appeal against any verdict of the war crimes tribunals.

Earlier on Wednesday, the parliamentary standing committee on law ministry rejected a proposal to empower any “aggrieved people” to appeal against a verdict of an international crimes tribunal.

The bill, placed before the parliament the same day, had proposed giving the government and aggrieved people the right to appeal with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.

Before Sunday’s amendment, the law allowed only the convicts to appeal against any conviction.

The government brought the changes to the law in the wake of the ongoing mass movement at Shahbagh in the capital and elsewhere in the country.

People burst into protest on February 5 when a verdict delivered by a war crimes tribunal sentenced Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah to life in prison. The protesters feel Mollah was handed down "a lenient sentence" and that he should be awarded the death penalty.

Jamatis would just join BNP if BNP welcomes them. Which I don't think they would do.

National Shangshad* if I may add.

Ideological source of Jamat And BNP/BAL is totally different. so there is no chance that a jamat member would like to join BNP/BAL . I think As the process of banning Jamat as well as Islamic political party on card, member of Jaamat would try to form new political party under different name and a fake idelogy to get registration from election commission.

Makes more sense. I don't know the detail of the law yet. But if they made such a law, what if they included a clause which prohibits existing Jamat Shibir members from forming a new party? What's the use of a new law if loopholes are knowingly kept. :S

^^^ you are right unless the new laws verified and the situation in next couple of days will form the fate of existing Jamat members . to me it is seems the leaders who are under trial would be bared from joining new political party but the member of Shibir didn't born in 1971 so they should give the chance to form new party.

It was so ironic that many other parties like Muslim League, Communist (NAP), Nezami Islami etc. also opposed the break up of united PAK but none of it came under RAWAMY's (RAW+AWAMY) misrule up to this magnitude because none was active anymore in politics or didn't have a support base like JI. Ever since Law-Enforcer's inaction against Lathi-baita mayhem, it was understood that JI walas would have an extremely hard time in BD and wiith the take over of MUA/FUA, they might even be banned.

I predicted accurately that MUA/FUA would bring worse LANAT for BDians than even Mir Jafar and it was becomming so true. Those traitors executed the initial step of the BHARATI'S blue print on Bangladesh and left the rest for RAWAMY(RAW+AWAMY+COMMIE) to finish Islam off of BD. Now, the question needs to ask to those appeasers that have been arguing on such eventuality, haven't JI or other spiritual leader's forecasting on the impact on breaking up of PAK come to fruition?
