Bangladesh War Crimes Tribunal Sentences 3 to Death Over 1971 Atrocities

Mainly the latter but a lot of the figures involved in such trials likely did side with Pakistan during 1971
An agreement was made for no persecutions but the Bangladeshis are a treacherous lot and break their promises.

Protesting ideologically against the breakup of Pakistan is one thing.

Collaborating with a murderous junta intent on massacring innocent Bengali civilians just to "get even" or "set examples" along the lines of "Hum is haramzad kaum ki nasl badl dunga" is something else.

Examples abound where victims (Western-educated Bengali Engg. University Professors judged to be too liberal-minded) dug their own graves at gunpoint and were efficiently lined up and shot - falling to those same graves they had just dug. These events were recorded on ENG TV cameras in the BUET campus by a professor, the first such documented use of this technology. Jamaati involvement in these killings is hard to dispute.

The world was changing too fast for Jamaatis' comfort level.

Some Jamaatis unfortunately failed to see the distinction between ideological conviction (against the breakup of Pakistan) and petty vendetta-driven deliberate murder of their political enemies (in some cases Hindus) assisted by the Junta in East Pakistan at the time.

Murder is murder, and war-crimes are war-crimes. One can't slice it any other way.

Of course in the Western part of East Pakistan, there were plenty of atrocities committed past November 1971 toward the Bihari and other non-Bengali populations as well. Those war-crimes remain unsolved - but eventually will occur someday. No crime should go unpunished.

The Jamaati people who were just hanged lived to a ripe old age - enjoying their lifetime of comfort among friends and family for fifty long years.

The victims killed in 1971 did not have any such luck and had their lives ended in rather more ignominious manner.

For a footnote, read this (Bhutto and Yahya Khan had the ideal block-headed commander in Mr. Niazi). Where Scalpels, Forceps and Tweezers were needed in handling the delicate situation in East Pakistan, Bhutto and Yahya sent in this "Bull with a Jackhammer" to a China Shop.

I was wrong earlier.. Actually, come to think of it Mujeeb only pardoned them because he (or Bangladesh as a whole) didn't have the time or the luxury of investigating, apprehending and eventually carrying out justice on all the thousands of collaborators.

He wanted to project stability instead of discord and uncertainty.

Perhaps, it was the right decision, perhaps, it wasn't but one thing is more sure, If we hanged, shot and maimed these vermin a thousand times and had the ability to bring them back to life for each round of punishment, it wouldn't be enough.

And any Bangladeshi, regardless of what party they support, who thinks we should live and let live; let these scum run free into the last days of their lives, is misinformed, ignorant, daft and should be ashamed of themselves.

As for the so called political motive behind these trials... I ask -

Are these people the perpetrators ? Do they proudly associate themselves with a party that aided and abetted the genocide of their own people ?

If the answer is anything but No, then the motivation behind these trials is irrelevant as justice is most definitely being served, even If it's 50 years a little too late.

There is no doubt AL gets political gain by trying them but it's a byproduct of the trial. Just because AL makes political points i itself doesn't render the trials unfair.

jamat e islami was against the creation of Pakistan as well
Actually they were NEUTRAL.
But neutrality at that juncture was siding with forces against Pakistan. Religious parties mostly make wrong choices.

wrong move.
Ulysses S grant pardoning the leaders of the confederacy meant that American reconstruction did not go out as planned. Same thing happened in BD.

denying justice doesn't even make sense from a moral perspective

should have delivered swift justice when he had the chance

I feel like these trials don't burden the BD-Pak relationship as extensively as they used to do. Just a couple of years ago, things looked very different.

BD and PK must understand that having a close and functioning alliance is much more helpful for both sides.

There's nothing to gain from hatred.

Fair trials. Ignore the Pakistanis on this one. The ones who have been hanged and jailed so far are well known rajakars who committed atrocities.

Alhamdulillah. Justice for the victims.

Have you noticed, since the start of these hangings yrs ago, that as soon as these traitors got rounded up and hanged.

That Bangladesh leadership has gotten stronger and the country started progressing faster?

An agreement was made for no persecutions but the Bangladeshis are a treacherous lot and break their promises.

Like pak elite back stabbing a strong wise leader imran khan that would have led pak into better days?

Ok......

BD nominal per capita in 2022 - $2,4000
Expected growth - 6-7%

Pakistan nominal per capita in 2022 - $1,700
Expected growth - 2-3%

Talk when you have a higher per capita than BD which I predict will NEVER happen in any of our lifetimes as Pakistan will most probably still be a 3rd world country when BD is a semi-developed country in the 2040s.

Pakistan should ALWAYS have been led and dominated by us BD'shis as we are modern thinking and scholarly rather than the tribal mentality that exists in Pakistan even to this day.

Exactly.

Bangladesh and Pakistan's enemies (both economic and political) have more to gain from this hatred between the two countries.

These events must be judged in a cool-headed dispassionate way, against the big geo-political global picture. Nothing must distract and hijack our ultimate goal of integrating D-8 economies - which Turkiye has been a strong proponent of.

I have long been an advocate for D-8 countries to form a much stronger commercial union - interdependency a la EU, which will make all D-8 countries much more resilient against economic shocks, like the one forthcoming.

Bhai - Some Pakistanis may have issues here (some of them false flaggers as well), but from my personal experience educated people in both countries are brothers and sisters to each other. We have more common values than differences.

We should resist responding to troll/boasting comments or offering them or characterizing racial tensions. Not saying you did.

We offer sujud at the mosque in the same way, regardless of what we have in our wallets. Does not diminish the value of brotherhood or sisterhood.

The other day I saw a Bengali woman being washed by Pakistani women at our local mosque prior to her burial. They did not charge one cent - did it out of the sanctity of their hearts. Let this be a lesson to all of us.

When it is time for us to pass on, we will be the only ones to help each other.

Let not petty things like dollars tear us asunder.

A brother and sister are at the end of the day are still brothers and sisters, notwithstanding niggles and petty quarrels.

Grant didn’t want to kill his fellow whites unless absolutely necessary. And had no interest in giving blacks any rights. Just wanted to end slavery.

Whereas Mujib was under huge pressure to let Jamaatis off from their US backers. To this day, US is still close to the Jamatis.

When was the last time you visited Pakistan? Lol , you are still living in 1971.

That would be the case of course. Bangladesh's official name is "People's Republic of Bangladesh", Socialist style, and as ever the USA government will want the mullahs to be dominant so as to replace a progressive, Socialism-inspired leadership and get into power to be its slaves in the fight of USA government against Communism and Socialism especially arising out of Muslim-majority societies.
