What's new

J-31 possibly being tested & evaluated in Pakistan

we wont get 55 to 60 million $ F-16 block 52 from USA and you talking about 85 to 100 million $ F-35:crazy::crazy::hitwall: PAF should go for USS ENTERPRISE from the movie STAR TRACK:lol::lol::rofl::rofl:

F35 unit cost is $130 million each

This maybe without weapons & cost of ,maintenance and
servicing .

Rafale F3 and Typhoons are in same range give or tale $20 million each

The JF17 thunder is costing $25 million each

The J10B I hear is around $45 million each

On this basis ARE we Right to assume the J31 when it becomes available for export maybe around
$90 to $100m each

Early indications of PAk FA are price range $125million without weapons

95% of the worlds air forces will not be able to buy and operate fifth generation fighters. for several more decades

.
Yes i saw the video but time line seems too optimistic, dont you think so? Even China wouldnt be able to have initial operational capability before 2018 and J-20 has been in testing and evaluation for a while now. J-31 is an altogether new platform. 2020 seems a more reasonable time frame.
Well the plane was in development for a while. now the Chinese going to use electronics that are available for j-10 and Russian engine with ram coating from j-20 so yes it might be available in 2017-2018.

.
Could this mean that US will ultimately lose out on future fighter orders from Pakistan? If so this would help the PAF tremendously, no more reliance on an unpredictable supplier who's foreign policies towards Pakistan shift biased on how they feel that day.
Personally I feel that it might be better for both sides. This way there are no expectations from one another.

Are you serious aboiut USA losing out to Pakistani sales.

In the last 30 years PAF have acquired 18 new fighters from USA and half of that cost was met by USA grant Aid.

In the mean time USA has orders today for over 1000 F35/f15/f16/f18 from 19 countries worth more than the entire GDP of Pakistani.

I don't think they will miss PAF orders that much ,

FOR those of you expecting to SEE new fighters before 2020 I AM 99% CERTAIN it will be be either JF17 block 2/3 or used F16s

AS FOR J31 aspirations I suggest a revisit in 2024 when the chinease have reached intial operational clearance

As for EVALUATIONS BY PAF they have in the last ten years researched tested discussed the following since 2006

Rafale
Typhoon
Gripen
J10
SU35

The Russian fighter was sure thing last month

The lesson is don't read too much into evaluations

THE HARD REALITY is modern prestige wea;pons cost the EARTH TO BUY $$$BILLIONS & BILLIONS

look at india ten years later they ordered just 36 rafales having evaluated 5 mmrca for a decade

Pakistan is in a much harder scenario financially than india

ITS VERY VERY DIFFCULT

. .
1) J-31 is about the size of f-35 which is single engine, but j-31 is twin engine so less space available for armament.
2) F-35 is to replace F-16 while F-22 to replace F-15 as air superiority fighter and its also considerably bigger than f-35.
3) In china J-31 is counterpart of f-35 and j-20 for f-22.
In the light of above mentioned 3 facts, how can you say that j-31 is a long range plane???

Secondly, India is also a part of PAKFA...Russia will never cancel a program from which it is sure to make handsome amount of $$$$..so about this point you are completely delusional.

Thirdly, JH-7 is not talked about by PAF at all. and even if we induct it it will still be a 4th gen platform. I have learned Jh-7 is more of a bomber.(i might be wrong on that correct me if that's the case.) we surely need another platform like Su35 or EFT type which can deny enemies air superiority over our air space.

So far PAF's future plan is JF-17,F-16,J-31 and ingenious stealth platform(which according to my understanding will be a single engine)...This will give a defensive force for sure in future. But remember PAF achieved its goals in previous wars beacause of offensive action not defensive..that's why we need something like J-20 or TFX which can give us that extra punch if we need to win the wars....I was watching an indian defence show...and a retired army officer said a line which i really liked...that Wars are fought to win....But i hear here all our senior members and all the assets available to us that we can survive a war...that is the fundamental flaw in our strategy.

Couldn't just resist myself. If Indian mindset is like "wars to win" then does it mean that if there's a slightest suspicion (not to win) they won't be able to make it? Now, these folks give a hell lot of importance on conjectures for decision makings (I'm not going to the details for it'd be way beyond this forum). The Pak Ordu's considerable amount of job may be to play with those knobs...

I think you miss took what I was trying to say. I'll reexplain my statement: For Pakistan does this mean the end of buying US fighter jets. Not the US, I know very well that the US does not need Pakistan, and that the PAF has a very tight budget constraints.

Also I know that Pakistan did not buy more then the 18 F-16, but some of that reasoning had to do the US not wanting to sell F-16 to them either. If you look Pakistan was ready to buy 72 or so at one point but could not because of the massive earth quake that took place, so a great deal of money was put towards the relief effort that is the reason behind that. On top of that Pakistan was given the option to buy 18 additional new block 52s after purchasing the original 18 but did not take the offer.

As far as I know it was not just US aid money that was used to acquire the F-16, There was money that the US owed to Pakistan when it had acquired F-16 back back during the Soviet-Afghan war. Pakistan had paid for more but sales were blocked in early 1990s because Pakistan was working on nuclear weapons with Chinese assistance.

I think u misunderstood my post...what i meant was that there is a difference of attitude....one strives to over power and overrun the opposition and the other only tries to survive that brunt...in more easy terms one's approach is really aggressive and other's quite defensive...what i want for Pak is to shift atleast to defensive-offensive that means procuring weapons system which provide you superiority in air , land and sea.

I think the J-31 still needs several more years. Pakistan may be better off get a Stealthy JF-17 instead. The J-31 could make a nice carrier bird, though.

. . . .
If one takes a closer look at things the "J-31" is the awaited stealth "JF-17", they are both made specifically for Pakistan, with export options to other countries.. They were supposed to be 250 JF-17 in total, now we hear they will be only 150, so the missing 100 might well be J-31s as that makes much sense..
Who has heard about the KLJ-7A before it was shown in Zuhair air show?
News were out about induction of the J-31 in 2018 quite some time ago.. So one should not get surprised if China surprises us again with an early induction and mass production ( in a JV with PAF with ToT) of the J-31v2.., after-all Pakistan will induct a 100 or so.. With a squadron (preferably 2 sq) of either J-16 or SU-35 for air superiority, it will make PAF a very potent air force with 200 or so AESA radars, IRST, many more advanced electronic systems and all the sophisticated weapons these fighters can carry and deliver.. exports will follow as for the JF-17, slowly but surely..
