I think the effects are psychosomatic in nature. Few lakh people come to get this fish medicine. It was started in 1845 by Bathini family and this annual ritual continues to this day.

Its not what you think, these camps are organized like social welfare schemes on large scale basis.
And its not mandatory to go to these camps. People go there by there free will but of course elders will take young ones with them. N since many people are vegetarian in India so the kids have a bit of issue in taking a live fish but its for their own good.

Besides it is said if you take the medicine in early years then there are less chances for you to develop asthma latter on in life.

As the saying goes prevention is better than cure.

I have taken it my self so i know it pretty well n besides the fish is so small it hardly feels anything, its more about the mental state regarding taking a live fish.
