Wouldn't it have been more honorable and shown more gravitas on his part had he refused to accept the award?

He did what every other patriotic person does.
He sacrificed his personal peace of mind, pride, sleep for the sake of his country to hide some face from their general public.
IMO he is a brave person and with not commit suicide even though he must be facing extreme traumas and taunting from his fellow service men for fake award.
