The ongoing dispute about Iran's alleged nukes has put India in a diplomatic row. Iran is an ally of India but so is USA and Israel. Sounds weird, huh? USA/Israel/KSA at one hand and Iran on the other. Kinda surreal. During the cold war, particularly after the 71 debacle we were decidedly in the Soviet camp opposed to West. And now, when we thought that our relations with the West were finally normalizing we find ourselves as a major supporter of Iran. India will continue to purchase crude.
One can anticipate the reaction in the USA. For the past few years we were relishing the media blitz in the West against Pakistan. Well, time to wake up boys. Soon, the Western TV networks will start the same diatribe against us. Fox news anchors will start proscribing - India, the bigoted supporter of the Islamofascist regime in Iran (imagine that ), and man, are their roads dirty! Now, to be fair, US/Israel do have a point. We are demanding (and getting) weapons, nuclear fuel, export market and FDI, a lot of it, from them. Time for a bit of quid pro quo. Dump Iran or we dump you. New Delhi doesn't have much faith in the authoritarian regime in Tehran, to be honest, but Iran is too valuable. We are expecting to maintain a low profile and hope the storm passes over. But if US threatens to close their market we will be in a fix. In particular, our long term relations with US will certainly be damaged badly.
As far as Iran is considered, President Ahamdinejad's rhetoric is indeed unnerving. I really don't get this. What's the point in this sabre rattling? If you can fight and defeat US/Israel in a conventional war, then fight. If not, use diplomacy. Just as the West refuses to understand the simple fact that killing innocent Muslims ('collaterally', of course) makes them more prone to terrorism, Iran forgets that terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians makes them more resolute in defending their position and makes the Palestinian's case worse.
