Israel in photos

it's sad to juxtapose Israel with the occupied Palestinian territories, which are worlds apart from eachother in terms of development and human living conditions (especially Gaza)
Taming Hamas would probably be necessary for that to happen:

Banks in Gaza closed on Thursday in protest against Hamas's seizure of $250,000 in cash in a dispute with the Palestinian Authority.

A banking official said Hamas police went to the Palestine Investment Bank on Wednesday and demanded the money from the account of the PA-backed Palestine Investment Fund, which Hamas alleged had been illegally transferring money out of Gaza.

"(Hamas police) said unless they were given the money, they would take it by force," the official told Reuters. He said the police left with bags of cash filled with Israeli shekels worth $250,000 after several hours of discussion.

"All banks closed their doors today to protest against Hamas's assault on the Palestine Investment Bank," said the official, who declined to be identified.

A West Bank official for the Palestinian Monetary Authority, which oversees banking in Gaza and the West Bank, said the Hamas police had committed "armed robbery." In a statement, the monetary authority demanded the return of the cash.
No capital, no development. Hamas only wants development on its own terms, which (by its charter) must include the destruction of Israel, as justified by the citation in its charter of that old forgery, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, which the Mubarak regime promoted here there and everywhere.

well it was israel that gained the most through divisions between Fatah and the elected Hamas govt. Therein lies the real tragedy. I hope the Arab Revolution will convince Palestinians that unity is KEY to their success.

of course there are external factors; israel controls Gaza ports, controls pretty much the entire Palestinian Nation's electricity, water supplies, sewage (lack thereof)

but out of respect to 500 and the israeli members here, i dont want to politicize this thread. Pictures only.

I do hope sanity and peace will prevail on that side of the world and a just solution would be devised.

these are some mouth-watering pictures. I have heard a lot of nice things especially about Haifa. Reminds me a lot of Beirut. One day if we have diplomatic relations with them, who knows maybe i'll even visit.

I've met some very like-minded israeli peoples; setting aside political views on some (admittedly pressing) issues, they seem like friendly people and would make good friends.
There is no equality in this world. Difference between UAE and Yemen is even bigger (or Albanian vs Italy, Morocco vs Spain, USA vs Mexico and Cuba..). And live conditions in Palestinian territories including Gaza are highers than in Egypt for example.

my sincerest apologies then for being mistaken. I wasn't aware that other people from ''Africa the poor subcontinent'' apart from Ethiopians were present.

Read an article about the latter on BBC some time back

BBC News | Africa | Ethiopian Jews struggle in Israel

The adult Ethiopians had the most difficulties to assimilate into Israeli society due to the vast cultural differences. Government helped them, each family received ~40k NIS with their arrival, for children it is easier to blend, as time passes they integrate, more enrolling into universities, progressing in the army, there are even several pilots in IAF, doctors etc..

I have reneged on my promise to keep out of politics here, but i cant sit and allow that statement. This is factually incorrect; you know it, I know it.

Just admit that until israel recognizes Palestinian sovereignty, there cant be any real peace. Palestinians at this point have no choice it seems, but to accept israel ; mostly due to the force israel has used on them --and the undying unwavering financial and military support to israel (by US and other countries)

i dont like to read distorted facts

Thats correct and I know it. Egypts HDI is 0.620, Palestinian territories - 0.737. Cheers.

interestingly enough, i referred to World Bank's 2010 World Development Indicators, Neither Palestine nor ''Palestinian territories'' are listed. Alas.

can you find me the specific page from where you got this HDI figure, i used Adobe PDF search function and couldnt find it. Thanks in advance.

28 page. Palestinian territories are ranked 110 place in HDI index, while Egypt - 123th place (Morocco - 130th place, Yemen - 140th place, Sudan - 150th place).

Average daily wage in Palestinian territories is 23.5$ (source). Thats some 120-140 $ a week (depending if u work 5 or 6 days). In Egypt most of people earn that sum a month.
