Pakistan Halts NATO Supplies to Afghanistan After Attack

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — Pakistan closed a vital transit link for NATO supplies for the war in Afghanistan on Thursday in apparent retaliation for an attack by coalition helicopters on a Pakistani security post hours earlier.

Trucks and oil tankers were stopped at the border post of Torkham just north of Peshawar and it was unclear when the post would reopen, a Pakistani security official said.

A closure of the crossing through which NATO and American troops receive most of their non-lethal equipment is rare, and signaled a downturn in the military relationship between Pakistan and the United States just three months before the Obama administration takes stock of progress in Afghanistan.

A NATO helicopter attacked a border post at Mandati Kandaw, a town close to the capital of Parachinar in the Kurram area of Pakistan’s tribal region, at 5 a.m. on Thursday, the official said. Three paramilitary soldiers of the Frontier Corps were killed, and three others injured, he said. Another border post at Kharlachi in the Kurram region was struck a few hours later, the official added.

The two posts are about 15 miles apart and border Paktia Province in Afghanistan.

The incident occurred as the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Leon Panetta, was in Islamabad for a previously scheduled visit. He was expected to meet the head of the Pakistani military, Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, later on Thursday, American officials said.

The helicopter attacks into Pakistani territory Thursday came after American military helicopters launched three airstrikes last weekend killing more than 50 people suspected of being members of the Haqqani network of militants.

American officials in Afghanistan tried to temper Pakistani anger about those attacks, saying that the helicopters entered Pakistani airspace on only one of the three raids, and had acted in self-defense after militants fired rockets at an allied base just across the border in Afghanistan.

American military commanders say they have become increasingly frustrated at the tempo of deadly attacks against American troops in Afghanistan by the Haqqani militants who shelter in Pakistan’s tribal region.

A spokesman at NATO headquarters in Afghanistan said the incident was under investigation.

The problem is that NATO can get away with these mishaps really easily. There have been a lot of deaths within NATO because of friendly fire. There was a lot of controversy over such incidents here in the US. They just blame situational error and logistics failure in a battlezone for these errors.

Hopefully they are able to explain what caused the deaths. Certainly I wouldn't be happy if it were to happen to our forces.

And thats the reality of combat.. How many non combatants have died accidently in Pakistani COIN operations?? Quite a lot.. Correct??
So for all you know, it might be a few honest mistakes..

lagta hey inkay saath bhi wohi karna parayga jo Russia kay saath kya tha...

You mean USSR??

Dude, who did USSR was USA. Pakistan was a weapon wielded by NATO and USA to checkmate USSR. And the results of becoming that weapon is still visible today after 3 decades.

Who will you get to wield you against USA this time??

The last strike which they did and killed 7 or so security men similarly on a Pakistani post, was deliberate.

Pakistani posts positions are provided to them and updated accordingly, thus mistake if out of the question.

It seems NATO has become frustrated and is trying to send a message, hope we reply in the same coin and kill a few of them and say it was by mistake.

Officials Told to Stop Vital NATO Traffic at Border Crossing after NATO Copter Allegedly Kills Pakistani Troops

(CBS/AP) The Pakistani government ordered border guards to block oil tankers and trucks carrying NATO supplies into Afghanistan at a checkpoint Thursday, officials tell CBS News.

All NATO traffic was halted after threats by Pakistani officials to stop providing protection to NATO convoys if the military alliance's choppers hit Pakistani targets again.

Earlier Thursday, Pakistani officials alleged a NATO airstrike hit a border post, killing three Pakistani troops.

"This is the second such incursion of this kind in less than a week. It marks a serious violation of a red line already put in place by Pakistan. We cannot tolerate this kind of behaviour," a Foreign Ministry official in Islamabad told CBS News' Farhan Bokhari.

A Pakistani security official based in the northern city of Peshawar told Bokhari that verbal orders had been passed down to authorities at the Torkham border crossing to halt traffic.

The official said NATO supply vehicles were being stopped due to "rapidly growing insecurity, which makes it unsafe for us to let the trucks drive on."

"But we all know the reality," the official immediately added.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information to the media.

A NATO official in Afghanistan confirmed there was an attack in the border area close to the Upper Orakzai region on Thursday, but gave no further details saying the incident was being investigated. He and the Pakistani security officers declined to give their names, citing the sensitivity of the incident.

The attack was bound to worsen ties between Pakistan and NATO-led forces in Afghanistan at a crucial time in the 9-year war. The supply routes from Pakistan are vital for U.S. and NATO forces operating in Afghanistan, and convoys are often attacked by militants as the cross the border.

Bokhari points out that the orders to halt traffic are still just "verbal," but if Pakistan's government decides to officially halt the flow of supplies into Afghanistan, it would represent a massive logistical challenge for U.S. and NATO commanders, and an equally large diplomatic challenge for Western leaders dealing with an increasingly frustrated Pakistani government.

A European NATO official in Islamabad told Bokhari Thursday that tensions between Pakistan, the U.S. and other NATO nations seem to be rising rapidly.

"For the Western world, Pakistan seems to have become a rapidly growing staging point for militants who attack our troops in Afghanistan. We say Pakistan could do more (to restrain the militants), but hasn't taken adequate steps," said the NATO official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity.

Ahead of the closure, CIA Director Leon Panetta arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday for a two-day visit to meet with key Pakistani leaders.

Pakistan's state-owned television network PTV showed Panetta meeting Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani and other senior officials, including the head of the Pakistan's main intelligence agency, the ISI. PTV's report did not discuss the subject matter of the officials' conversations.

Panetta's visit comes after a record rise in the number of U.S. drone missile strikes on Pakistani soil -- largely believed to be the work of his agency. In September alone, at least 21 strikes have targeted suspected al Qaeda or Taliban sites in the country's lawless border region.

Pakistan Missile Strikes Paying Off?

The DAWN newspaper reported that Panetta was seeking a "clear timetable" from Pakistan to launch a new military operation in the North Waziristan region, a volatile area along the Afghan border. The area has long been eyed by U.S. officials as a refuge for militants who routinely attack Western troops in Afghanistan.

Western intelligence officials, all speaking on condition of anonymity, suggested Thursday that some of the recent missile strikes had specifically targeted militant leaders plotting a commando-style siege on major European cities.

Officials said Wednesday the threat was "still active," with some unnamed law enforcement agents even telling CNN that Osama bin Laden himself had signed off on the plans, which allegedly involved teams of well-armed militants simultaneously attacking sites in London, France and Germany.

However, not one of those European governments raised the terror threat level in their countries over the alleged plot, and the officials qualified their warnings by saying there had been no "imminent threat". The posturing led many experts and analysts - including a CBS News source in London with direct access to senior law enforcement agents, to speculate that the news of the plot was little more than a fabrication to justify the fierce bombing in Pakistan.

Beware Governments Trumpeting Terror Threats

Relations have been tense since NATO helicopters last weekend opened fire on targets on the Pakistani side of the border, killing several alleged insurgents. Those incidents were protested by Pakistan's government.

Pakistani officials differed on the exact location of the incident, saying it either took place in Upper Kurram or Upper Orakzai. The remote districts neighbor each other and there is no marked border between the two.

The dead men were from a paramilitary force tasked with safeguarding the border, they said. Their bodies had been taken to the region's largest town of Parachinar, said one of them.

Pakistan has a complicated alliance with the United States and NATO that is often subject to tensions.

Pakistan has to balance its support for Western forces in Afghanistan with the intense anti-U.S. feelings of much of its population. Opinion polls show many people regard the United States as an enemy, and conspiracy theories stating U.S. troops are poised to attack Pakistan and take over its nuclear weapons are common.

If only American public knows about the huge number of ISAF casulaties and the dead bodies which end up secretly in Pakistan and even dont make it to the US, this war could end in days if not in months ... !!!!

Nothing will comeout of this - Nato will say " We regret the loss of pak soldiers in a friendly fire accident " and pakistan will allow all the NATO trucks.

This is all drama being played out to satisfy pak public.

Pakistan has blocked NATO supply trucks passing through its territory after atleast 3 Pakistani soldiers were killed when a NATO Helicopter targeted a security chekpost in Kurram Agency, near the Pak-Afghan border.

Pakistani government officials said senior authorities had ordered them to block oil tankers and trucks carrying Nato supplies at a checkpoint bordering Afghanistan. The two officials said they were not told the reason for the order at the Torkham border post, but it comes after threats by Pakistani officials to stop providing protection to Nato convoys if the military alliance’s helicopters hit Pakistani targets again.

A NATO helicopter attacked a Pakistani security post near the Afghan border on Thursday, killing three troops, officials in Pakistan said. NATO said it was investigating the allegations and whether they were linked to an operation against insurgents in a nearby Afghan province.

The incident was likely to fray ties between Pakistan and US-led forces in Afghanistan at a crucial time in the nine-year war. Just last weekend, NATO choppers opened fire on targets across the border, killing several alleged insurgents inside Pakistan.

Islamabad protested the incidents, which have further stirred already pervasive anti-American sentiments among Pakistanis.

Shortly after the allegations emerged, two government officials told The Associated Press they were ordered to stop NATO supply trucks from crossing into Afghanistan at the Torkham border post, a major passageway for NATO materials. Earlier this week, Pakistan threatened to stop providing protection to NATO convoys if the military alliance’s choppers attacked targets inside Pakistan again.

Pakistani officials differed on the exact location of the deadly airstrike, saying it took place either in Upper Kurram or Upper Orakzai. The remote, mountainous tribal regions neighbor one another, and the border is hard to distinguish.

The dead men were from a paramilitary force tasked with safeguarding the border, the Pakistani security officials said. Their bodies were taken to the region’s largest town of Parachinar, one official said. Three troops also were wounded.

The Pakistani officials all spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation and because in some cases they were not authorized to release the information to the media.

Lt. Col. John Dorrian, a spokesman for intelligence and special operations at NATO headquarters in Kabul, said coalition forces observed early Thursday what they believed were insurgents firing mortars at a coalition base in Dand Wa Patan district of Paktia province in eastern Afghanistan.

“A coalition air weapons team called for fire support and engaged the insurgents,” he said. “The air weapons team reported that it did not cross into Pakistani air space and believed the insurgents were located on the Afghan side of the border.”

Dorrian said NATO was reviewing the reports to see if the operation in Paktia was related to Pakistan’s reports its forces were hit by NATO aircraft.

In June 2008, a U.S. airstrike killed 11 Pakistani troops and frayed the two nations’ ties. Pakistan said the soldiers died when U.S. aircraft bombed their border post in the Mohmand tribal region. U.S. officials said their coalition’s aircraft dropped bombs during a clash with militants. They expressed regret over the incident, but said it was justified.

Pakistan and the U.S. have a complicated relationship, with distrust on both sides.

Polls show many Pakistanis regard the United States as an enemy, and conspiracy theories abound of U.S. troops wanting to attack Pakistan and take over its nuclear weapons. The Pakistani government has to balance its support for the U.S. war in Afghanistan with the support it needs from the population.

The U.S. and NATO need Pakistan’s cooperation in part because they use its land routes to transport supplies to their troops inside landlocked Afghanistan. The Pakistani government officials said about 250 vehicles of NATO supplies cross into Afghanistan daily.

There were more than 100 NATO vehicles blocked at the checkpoint by Thursday morning, they said.
